R500 per article!!!

I doubt there are any writers prepared to work for less than R1.00 per word.

However, there may be a number of school essay winners prepared to do it and a good editor could then knock it into shape, but only if the article is really worth all that effort.

Deadbut wasn't Sean badenhorst till recently consulting editor on Bicycling? Hopefully he does a better job with his own mag?

I haven't read through all the reply's, but have to agree with the original post. Bicycling, and mostly all SA cycling mags a bit lacking when compared with international ones.

Now I know, the other international mags have many more contributors, journalists and larger budgets for those much loved pics and articals. But, I'd rather send the R100-150 on one of those and read it from cover to cover for the whole month, then spend R30 on something that lasts 20 minutes tops!

I still have some ProCyclings thats a year old, sometimes when I pick them up I still find something I haven't spotted before.

Yah, for sure, I dont buy any local mags these days and havent done so for ages, even the local running mags are so thin I would finish reading them BEFORE I even got home.

When you consider the thickness (pages) and quality editorial content and glossy pics of the international magazines for most sports (but especially cycling) as opposed to the local ones, its actually not that expensive - I have no problems paying 100 bucks for something I feel is worth the cost, but I hate paying a miserable 26 bucks for something that, to me, is not even worth the effort of wandering into the shop for.

Do you think it has anything to do with the size of the market?

I mean, how many bicycling mags get sold in SA per month, vs Cycling Weekly or Pro Cycling around the world?

That certainly has an impact on earnings and as a result overall quality could improve (from general articles to bike tests etc)

I think its difficult, or unfair to compare.

I agree with your point, but I dont think its difficult or unfair to compare, quality editorial is just as easy to publish as rubbish editorial, the international mags have just done their homework better, understand the market better, and listen to the consumer.

Confused am quite new to this, but if you guys do not like the magazine/s, why even think about them? If they are so bad and unimportant why bother?

Because MAYBE if we moan enough, the publishers will listen and improve their mag and we would actually buy it........

Have not renewed my subscription, I just do not understand their continued fascination with lance, he is not the first or last cyclist to break a collarbone but we have to have a "Lance Watch" link on the website to track his recovery FFS.

Prime example of not even bothering to understand the customer base, they just ASSUME everybody will be rushing out to read about Lance, when its obviously not the case.

If I want to read about LA, I look on the internet, its immediate and informative, in print it comes out 6 weeks later its old news and nobody is interested anymore.

Print needs to concentrate on non-news items and discussions on things which do not have time frames, somebody mentioned clubs etc - that is perfect as a good example of a print story, its interesting and is not old news even 6 months down the line.

As for Huisgenoot - I like it.!
