Why don't you guys just do what I do - if you get bad service - don't complain - and don't go back!

Why should I tell him that his service is up to cr*p - if he doesn't know it - he shouldn't get some free advice from me as how to improve his businesss

That is why more and more people are buying online from CRC, totalcycling etc. Why have a relationship with a LBS; the internet has a wealth of information; so a buyer can do research before ordering the item from these internet stores and get the best price to your doorstep. No standing around in shops waiting for LBS staff to help you when they feel like!

Here's my story - took my bike to a shop I thought would be good, as I had a sniff around there a few weeks prior. Booked in for service. Got a call about the state of things and work that needed to be done, and there was a lot. I gave the go ahead. Got the bike back with shop soiled parts (new crankset in particular) and had to book it back in later to complete the job (wheel build).

When I came back on the date they did not have the parts required (hubs). That really pissed me off. I sent a mail and had a long chat wth the owner about it. Poor service needs to be exposed! If I had not said anything nothing would have happened and folk are to easliy put off complaining.

Anyway, found a much better one closer to my place of work.

Exactumately some bike shops will never see me again even to browse around, other's might believe the shop is the best.

Way too subjective a thread to get any worthwhile output. Your worst shop could be my best and vice versa.

you just want to be class monitor a hub mod.

oh yes your package arrived and the Mr of Home Affairs was most happy with  her present.

I make use of more than one LBS, try to get the best prices and service.

For bike service - C/lab 4 ways/Westdeme/Cajees Oakdene

Buy from - Kyalami, The Cycle Hub, Westdene, C/lab, Cajees

I have had good service from all of them. The relationship building is important due to the fact that I believe you get a "better" deal if they know you and see you coming back.......

My LBS, Zululand Cycles has some of the best service I have seen. Always friendly, and I have never bought something I did not need. I complained about my strength on the hills, owner grabs a R320 book off the shelf and says here, go read and bring it back when done. They come and make contact the moment you walk in, and then are available for questions, even when busy.

They are also very active cyclists. A very nice bunch of guys.

Cycle Lab in Durbs is a bit different, I was in there for a good 30 mins before I was able to get some help, and I was the only one in there, except for the dude whose bike all the staff were faffing over. When I got some help the advice was good though and I made a good buy.

At another shop I wasn't helped, but got a scolding for taking a nice Fuji Team of it's rack. I muttered about it being a nice bike, my size and within my budget but I do not trust the service I will get and handed the bike to the owner before walking out.

I think the perception of good floor service will create a comfortable idea that you as a customer will not have issues with your bike purchase.

I have been supporting (or rather they have been supporting me!!) the same LBS since 1988 and its just been better everytime I go there. I returned to MTB after a couple of years layoff and found that the shop is still getting better. Thanx Linden Cycle....you ROCK!!Wink

How about we name "bad" importers.......  LOL

I'm building a new relatively lightweight wheelset for my soon to be complete 29er.

I got a quote from one of my lbs's to build the complete wheelset.  The price I was quoted for the hubs alone was more than 100% higher than the landed cost (of the hubs)  from CRC !!

Stuff the importer, I placed my CRC order this morning and will get the lbs to build the wheelset when the hubs arrive.

I saw an interesting add in the May issue of MBUK. It's for the Chris King BB. They proudly advertise it to arrive in November or December. You can buy it anywhere online already including locally in SA.

Shops in our area that I rate top class is:

1.  Leighs Cycle centre

2.  Hattons Cycles

3.  Cycle Lab

4.  Shaun's Power Cycles

All offer awesome service with a smile and are pretty reasonable with their prices for servicing bikes.  And hold a really great stock of things..

The ones that I think suck are Mavericks and Bring it On Cycles.. I dunno, I found them to be very unfriendly and a bit dodge to take your bike for a service, especially from Bring it On..
