Okay....so I have an Pick n Pay special MTB that I use for road cycling(embarrassed as hell, but ah well)

When I tell people about my average speed, some don't believe that I can achieve 22km/h, I don't know why though....

Is 22km/h fast for what I'm doing?....

also considering I have a LOT of climbs on route and as all know well, a MTB is VERY slow on climbs! so wont this also affect average speed ?

Just wondering...

Some nut kept on about " it is not about the bike"

Are you having fun on the MTB,  stuff everyone it is your bike.   If you do want to upgrade, look at the Silverback range.  very good value for money

22 avg on the road is fairly low. A good avg for a road race would be around 30 and that will be done by the riders in the C bunch (not sure if they still seed like that or not). Good riders up front would be doing +40 avg.

If I change my wheel diameter setting on my speedo...I can also get wonderful results!!Big%20smile

Do not worry about what others say & do....DO your own thing!!

the above is for a road bike.  I think if you can do 22 on that bike you will cruise at more than 30 without any problems with a lekker road bike, especially if you are riding with knoblys at the mo.

With that kind of pace you should call Contador, I hear he may have some loyalty problems with his current domestiques and may need serious back up in the Alps.

And above all remember, "it's not about the bike". Wink

... just don't put riser bars on when it is supposed to have flat bars, and don't put bar ends on, and don't wear lycra (there's more rules, pm manfrog for a comprehensive list) or the mtb nazi's will be on your case.

a) Check wheel diameter setting on speedo

b) Enjoy the ride

Avg speed indicates your fitness and the difficulty of the terrian over the distance, so I use it as an indicator as well, but does a high avg speed stick a smile on my face...no.  Conquering that bloody hill, yes! Speeding down the mountain, hell yes.

It's low but entirely probable.

I think a lot of bike / car problems on the road occur because motorist underestimate the speeds we do.

They expect us to be slower than we really can be.

Check the settings thing with the bike computer to get more accurate results.

Yeah, that's the same as when pedestrian scatter when I boom through downtown JHB on the motard...

Or you can do the "Slave Method" and put on more magnets. That should get your average speed up. I hear Slave put one on every spoke but that weighed him down so much he couldn't get up Camaro.

Didn't you guys say his bike was still stuck to the first lamp post at the bottom of the hill?

IanJ, it got stuck to the driveway gate first. So instead of increasing my avergare speed, it had the opposite effect. I spent ten minutes removing it from all the junk I got stuck to along the road. (Ten minutes per traffic light, street lights (only the steel ones.), it pulled me along rather nicely behind that taxi that my bike was irresitably attracted to.)

......if its not about the bike why don 't we all ride P&P specials?

I do think a bike makes a hell of a differance........ nobody is going to run a marathon with slops.......?
