If there was as much competition I would agree... ratio rule probably works to a certain extent. But could also be a muliplier rule on entries. R10 per km x number of entries.

I'm all for equality, but when the women slip the men the whole route and then come out to contest a sprint with 1km to go...do they deserve it?

If you want all the prize money, race the men.

I think it will be very unfair if they do get equal prize money.

Think of it this way...If they the top5 of both categories get the same prize money. The womens teams like MTN and NASHUA is much more likely to have 1 or more riders in that top5 than the mens teams would have in that same race. Thus actually the ladies will actually be making more money then their male counterparts. and also in a less competitive environment.

Well if you had  to think of it, that money that they win they keep for themselves if they wanted to.

I think equal prizemoney should be given to male and female in each category because we all ride the same route, we all suffer the same and we all feel pain in some way or another and everyone wants something in the end.

If the prizemoney was equal then it would be worth it for us females to actually look forward to any race and you would have more females riding and it doesn't matter how many team members are in the top 5, because then you know that they can work together well and are good riders!

The best solution is to give smaller male and female category prize ie 1-3, and bigger overall prizes for perhaps the first 5 to finish the race.

Female participation is certainly not high enough. Equal prize money would improve the quality of cycling but not increase the numbers. I think prize money should be relative to numbers and the distance raced. What would be nice though is for women's cycling to be promoted enough to give us a better chance of getting sponsorship - what you think?

Some real good answers here.

As a Ladies Team owner, i would like to see my riders getting good prize money. There are currently simply not enough ladies on the startline, to start demanding anything from any event organisor. What maybe should happen is the following:

1. Free entry for 1st time lady licence holders, at all cycle events in SA. The entry fees should be paid by CyclingSA. I think cycling development is about just getting poor black kids on bikes. Entry fee should be paid in the second year.

2. This will increase the female rider numbers.

3. The cost of cycling, if you think of a average size family of 4, could cost at least R450.00 per race. If you let the wives and young girls ride for free, the number will diff increase

4. Once we get the numbers up, then can we now ask for more prize money.

First of all woman cycling in europe is huge ... Average dutch/englis/italian/spanish people know the names of the woman cyclist and some of the teams racing in their country. I don't know why in South Africa know one knows who is the top ladies overseas ...????

Second of all, the woman cyclist in South Africa is racing the same distance as the girls are racing in europe. I know their is a huge difference in the standard of racing but if you go and look at the pro mens racing in south africa.

THEY ARE RACING HALF THE DISTANCE they would be racing if they raced in europe!!!!!! And then their standard is also lacking far behind the pro's even continental teams racing in europe!!!

You can say its unfair, but a man and a woman body is developed different, thus its ridiculous to state that the girls must race against the boys for price money ... what an upsurd of thinking to be honest!!!

You also can't expect to get race entries for free ... we also use the road, and need a com, etc. That is why there is sponsors, I know it is difficult times at the moment, but SA cycling must be there to  help girls who have the talent to go overseas and race there. Most top european girls get paid by their country, thus sponsors not having to pay such huge salaries...  reward the girls that wants to race ... and help them.

Flower. The South African public would not recognize the top Soth African woman cyclist never mind the top European cyclists. Who would you rate as top woman international cyclists?

i ignored this thread mainly because i dont ride fast enough to be in this category.

but when entering for the walkervile ride today, my eyes caught the 'prize money' link. so i checked it out.

the prize for winning the grand masters' category is more than winning the sub vet ladies category.

I assume then that the organisers expect there to be much more grand masters, than sub vet ladies? than ALL ladies older than 30, actually. or why this discrepency?

Why should anyone in SA race for the money. If you look at the international racing, they never mention the prize money of the TDF or Giro or any of the classics, but the prestige of winning such an event is what they race after. They dont say Boonen won 2000euro at Paris-Raubaix. Why dont they just make it something prestigeos to race for, like the fact that you could win the damn race. Give more trophies and better publisity before more prize money. Then each kid could start having a dream of one day winning that race and wont even bother for checking the prize money.

I don't know what a team does with R2000 anyway.

Give the prize money to the non pros and let hem spice up the racing.

My 2c:

Have an "allcomers" group that starts first and races for the overall top 10. Place the bulk of the prize money here. Anybody is welcome to enter this group (male & female).

The remainder of the price money should be split equally between male, female, juniors, tandems etc.

That way the best cyclist wins the big prize and everybody racing in categories other than "allcomers" gets some cash too.

This is obviously bias towards men because they have testoserone but giving equal prize money to men and woman then begs the question - why don't juniors/vets/masters/tandems/diasabled athletes/single speed bikers etc ALL get equal prize money? The main aim of prize money is to incentivise the best of the best regardless of age, gender, colour etc etc.

Ultimately I feel most people ride for glory more than money - they have to with the amount of prize money in SA! Hell - at the Dullstroom Winter Challenge I was 3rd subvet male overall and got R100 plus some goodies - entry was R280...
