When you first started out

My first experience of the roadie wierdo's ......

 

I had been riding every morning for about 3 weeks (no helmet shhhhh, takkies and running shorts), exactly 12k's as measured in my car. Felt I was now starting to get the speed up a bit and feeling good. So at a work meeting someone starts talking cycling and I chip in 'hey I ride 12k's every morning and today I managed it in 30mins dead', comment from a proper cyclist 'why did you bother to get out of bed!' Nice, not!

I only started 3 months ago, so it is fresh in my mind.

 

Great bike (GT Series II road bike) given to me by a helluva good mate for free. Also gave me his Olympic shoes  (we are same size thankfully) and a particulary crappy helmet, but I am not complaining.

 

Will buy new helmet when I get new money end of the month. It is an old head anyway so it might look super silly in a nice new helmet.

 

I still need so much stuff that my head spins (might need that helmet afterall), but with money hating me the way it does (never hangs around) we will do what we can when we can.

I inherited a Lejeune bike from my uncle when i was in std 8, he cycled with it in the late 70's. Was too big for me but it lasted while i saved up for my tie die hanson that i got in std 10

 

Cycling shorts? whats that? we cycled in rugby shorts and takkies, no helmets

Now you giving your age away.I also had a set like that.

I had a pair of blue and white Patric cycling shoes and a pair of rugby shorts didn't have cycling shorts.Had a Raleigh Kyalami that i got as a present and it was like R120 at OK Bazars.

 Blue Peugeot Rapport, Suntour 7, Rigida Wheelset....and of course LOOK pedals. Blue Patrick shoes with a Brancale strap helmet....those where the days.

Purple Peogeot Rapport toe clips and takkies! Started my first race with pro's doing the 120km while I was supposed to start the 50km fun ride. After 10km the one guy asks me if I'm in the right group because I seem to be a bit young (11) Only then I realised I had to race back to be in time at my start for the 50km... Haha

Did my first Argus in 1991 on a Peugeot Rapport. Graduated to a Daccordi with Campag groupset in about1995. First Mountain Bike was a second hand Bridgestone MB3. Graduated to a Marin Bear Valley SE some years later. (hardtail) First Full suspension bike was a Marin Mount Vision in 2000. Now ride a Marin Mount Vision Pro. (2006 model) Could never go back to a hard tail although I still have the Marin Bear Valley.( and the Daccordi and the 2000 Marin Mount Vision)( best Argus was 3hr 28 mins)jagwil2009-07-06 09:12:52

My first bike weighed 13KG.. Add to that my weight of 90 kg...It was tuff. And the bike was ugly...

I'd like to say what my first bike was, but I'll never know cos it was 2nd hand and had been given a great big wollop of bright yellow enamel. It was so thick you couldnt see the step of the lugs. My dad put the seat on at a 45deg angle pointing down and said it must be like that so I could grow up the saddle. I guess this is why I dig climbing to this day.

 

My pride was the clip on Campy cable guide on the bottom of the DT, the rest was Altustarboy2009-09-22 03:21:44

I was chatting to a new guy who joined our company last week and he  bought a road bike about 3 weeks ago. So far he has bought cycle kit, glasses,cycle computer, bike tools and stripped and reassembled his bike but has yet to actually ride it.

Kicked butt going up Magoebaskloof coming in 31st in my very first race.  LOVED it.

 

From there built up a MTB fixie and trained on that.

 

3 years later I got my Trek and started serious racing......Even entered the 94.7....

 

Back then you did not care what brand, how light, what color......as long as you could ride your bike, all was well.......

Which reminds me......we use to ride with mining safety goggles.  Worked well!  For R20 you got a dark lens AND a clear lens for night training!  http://s3.amazonaws.com/advrider/naughty.gif
