Latest build I've completed, this time for a good mate.

The brief was he was wanting something different, single speed, and it needed to turn heads over in the UK, where he is moving to in a couple of weeks. He pretty much gave me carte blanche to do what I like, so I was kinda nervous that I'd do something he ended up hating.

I handed it over yesterday and thankfully he loves it. It was a very tired, black and yellow Panasonic DX-3000 that hadn't been ridden in almost 20 years.

Not as elegant or beautiful as these retro road cycles!

This is my 1989 Claud Butler Shaman with period mods for a long cycle tour. Tubing is Reynolds 501. Crank set is Mavic outer with Onza middle and granny. Early generation XT on the rear, nice comfy Brooks in leather and a strange Girvin Flex Stem! Wheels are Mavic (tandem) on the rear and Campag Thor on the front turning on Deore Hubs.

This machine carried me from UK to North Cape of Norway and on to Cape Town back in 1992/3. It is unrestored, just chills in the garage.post-52292-0-29576300-1397953104_thumb.jpgpost-52292-0-17668700-1397953144_thumb.jpgpost-52292-0-94106600-1397953187_thumb.jpgpost-52292-0-49405400-1397953212_thumb.jpgpost-52292-0-58863200-1397953249_thumb.jpg

So I have completed my 1989 Hansom. I have owned this bike from new.

Decided to rebuild it about a year ago.

It came out with the "Blue" anodized 105 Groupset.

The wheels are Wolber TX Profile rims built onto 105 Hub with Wheelsmith Spokes.

White Rolls Saddle, Cinelli Criterium Bars, Stronglight Headset.

The cranks were in bad shape so I polished them. Not an original finish, but I think it looks ok.

It has been repainted, but I have kept the original Decals, My painter managed to tape up and cut around the original Decals. Colour is also original.

The bike was bought from Dave Wiseman Cycles in Durban.

Used to love the Hansom's. Especially the white/pink/blue (with smoke texture) frames. Think Malcolm Lange still rode one. Remember a pic in Tri-Cycle or something that showed him on that Hansom.

Yeah that's correct, Malcolm, Nic White.... They rode for AIG and they rode the white/pink/blue bikes..

That takes things back a few years...

Sometimes, leaving such a bike completely unrestored has a greater appeal given the "history"that's attached to each and every scratch and ding.

Nice Quinton

The white San Marco saddle is a classic! Looks to be in VGC.

The buffed cranks work well and being 105 they look great and you could always have a small transfer/decal made to provide authenticity.

Enjoy the ride! Hope we get the chance to meet some day soon.

Thanks.

The rolls is new, I bought it from total cycling online.

I have had crank transfers made. The hassle with living in durban is oxidisation of aluminium. I initially had the transfer on and cleaecoated the crank arm. But didn't last long. So have removed and polished. I need to find someone who can anodize but keep a nice shine... Haven't found anyone as yet.

I have CMM probed the crank profile and may CNC Mill the wording into the crank. Just need some time at work on the machines...

Im about to start on a Look KG66 project, has Suntour Superbe Pro and a Mavic rear derailleur which should be fun. Some other items in the box of tricks include Campag Nuovo Record and some Dura Ace AX bits and pieces... Will post some pics later today!

Hey Q

Tel me about how the biopace is like out on the road? I often wonder about that shape - somedays it makes sense but on other days I imagine it makes for an irregular spinning motion.

Justin

ps I quite enjoy the whole look of your bike and laud you for not butchering it into a "fixie"

Too much history for me on this bike. I got my Natal colours on her in '92, so I had to take her back to original.

The biopace is actually nice. I'm running a 53/42 and a 12-25 on the rear(7 speed). When we raced back in the day we normally took the biopace off. As school boys we raced restricted gearing and at high cadence the chain used to "whip" a lot. We used to replace with standard round rings. The difference isn't extremely noticeable, but I do feel happier on the hansom than I do on my cannondale.

I had one of the first Trek's to come to SA, black alu frame with bright pink lettering. Some time in late 1980's. It had biopace chain rings and I recall taking my Cateye cadence equipment off my Bridgestone RB1(?) and putting it on the Trek. We used to ride with cadence setting all the time and I recall not much difference in the pedal action.

Hi all

So I'm building up a Look KG 96 with Dura Ace 7400/7401 part.

I'm still looking for some parts headset, bb and brake lever hoods. Does anyone know were I can get these parts locally?

Nice polishing job, man.
