Hi all. Looking at Kamaal's beauty above reminded me of an enquiry i've wanted to post on a previous occasion. Who can I contact in the Cape Town area that would be able to assist in "buff polishing" older cranksets. I have 2 where the sparkle has worn off; would love to get that old shine back. Thanks Sean

Changing the subject Sean.......are you really going to build the Cosmos you bought yesterday?

Regards

Sven

Hi Sven. My wife would totally lose it. I've already got a few projects that need completing. Don't think I can push my luck any further .

Must have been another Sean who bought the Cosmos.

Sean

Hi Sean

its always on days when u have things to do that the boss has more important things for u to do. From the pics the cranks don't look too bad. I would say start with 1000grid waterpaper and work ur way to a smoother paper until u have reached the desired effect. once thats done wipe it down and use a drill. Put it in a vice and get a buffing or polishing head(the vice just keeps the drill stable for when u push the cranks onto the polishing head). Torkcraft is the brand that i have. Once thats done keep some hand cleaner ready, use autosol rub it onto the cranks or even on the buffing head and let her rip! iv noticed that the darker the polishing head becomes the better it polishes. feel free to whatsapp me if u having any problems. good luck and enjoy. Oh the hand cleaner is there because your hands will be covered in polish. A mask and goggles will also come in handy.

Please if you are going to do the blades as well be careful because it can get caught and u can cut a deep hole in your hand neck arm or whatever body part it shoots at

Here's my contribution to this awesome thread. It's almost complete, I just need to apply the rest of the decals and find a gear change indicator marker. This might be it's permanent parking space as well, much to my wife's disgust :whistling:

I remember those. Heaven's, it's a long time back. A friend had one of them; we'd swop bicycles occassionaly. Him on my Peugeot Sting and me on the Chopper. Damn, that was FUN

Just receive my fully restored Lejeune back from Francois du Toit.

Complete with period correct components (1980 Dura Ace 9-speed group set, Shimano 600 brakes, Cinelli handle bar, Brookes Professional saddle).

Saying I'm happy is an understatement. :)

I take it the frame is a tad too small for you

Hey guys,
So a little while back I posted pics of the '88 Cicli Zini (Reynolds 525) with full Shimano 600 Tri-Color Groupset which I bought, and am in process of restoring.

However, I think the bug's bitten, because I find myself checking each and every paws shop, old school bike shops, messy backyards, adverts etc... yup, there goes all my savings Hahaa.

So, I picked up this old girl this week, and am so excited + she's my size.

Specs and details herewith (photos attached), and would appreciate any additional info or comments

Frame: Le Turbo - no decals of type of tubing, but I guess Reynolds 500 or 501 (also think probably early 80's, around '84)
Handlebar and Stem: Belleri St Etienne (France)
Brake Levers and Calipers: Modolo Corsa (Italy)
Downtube Shifters: Simplex
Front Derailleur: Suntour Sunrace
Rear Derailleur: Simplex SX630 (Bernard Hinault)
Hubs & Skewers: Maillard (France)
Cassette: Maillard Atom 77 6 Speed (France)
Crankset: Gipiemme Azzurro (Italy)
Front Rim: Ambrosio Elite
Rear Rim: Mavic (thinking the original was probably Ambrosio - but got damaged and replaced by Mavic)
Saddle: Selle Italia Mundialita

Sadly no pedals, was the same with the Zini - now hunting down Shimano 600 and Gipiemme pedals

@Bikebloke

Are you a seam mistress by any chance?

I would like to claim special skills with the leather bars but I hang with some of the "ou manne" experts from the days and a combination of tips from them and google and it wasn't so difficult to get done
