The seeding for this race was a bit cock-eyed. I was stuck behind some okes who clearly had no hope of finishing in the top 50 and yet they were on the second row of the start pen. By the time I'd passed them, Burry and co were already at the top of the first hill.

The oke who finished 9th overall was seeded A5. He ignored that and started A1.

As Eldron says, the course didn't allow for much recovery. My average HR was 171 and my max was 191, which is high for me.

I guess the course was about as good as you can do in that area. Who knows where they're going to have it when that property development is sold. One advantage of the credit crunch is it delays the development on MTB routes. The bumpy bits, especially that bit right near the end, were extremely unpleasant.

I was hoping to get the elusive sub four hours for the two 94.7s but clearly that's not going to happen with a 2:07 today. Jock Green could be in with a shot. Perhaps AM, depending on which group he rides tomorrow. I think he's done it before, as has JP Pearton.

I'm afraid to ask but how did the timing work? I left my winning time chip at home, nothing about that on the MTB general info & no timing mats at finish. Though it was done via number boards?

Simple. It didn't. Like everything else about this event apart from the entry fee it was "low budget". Timing seemed to be done by calling out numbers as you crossed the line. No results 24hrs later.

703m of climbing in 50km? So it was like a flat road race then?

You rode like a beast my friend, I eventually gave in, the course killed me, up or down   smiley18.gif

I should have taken my SIR 9, definitely a course for big wheels.

what would make a course ideal for big wheels, or non-ideal for small-wheels?

Easy - big wheels are better for ALL courses ;-)

No seriously - they are.

Rode the 25km with my son. Started in B4 - rode for 1hr 40 and were stationary for 30 minutes, almost 20 minutes at the last bottleneck. Don't think that qualifies as a race. Also got quite ticked off about the idiots pushing in at the front of the bottlenecks. Thought I would do this one as a father / sone bonding but after this I think Baba's lodge is a better option. 50km sounds like fun. Maybe I will do that one next year.

The marshalling was poor and there was manual timing. The route was boring, but hey the end chute with the crowd was nice, maybe organisers should go and talk to Fritz Pienaar on how to put on a MTB race.
