The first generation Fortuner has an inherent problem regarding the chassis/suspension geometry. There was no recall, as they didn't have a solution other then replacing the vehicle, and lets face it, in the capatalist world in which we live that was not going to happen. The problem has apparently been rectified in the latest generation. If you going to buy one of these second hand, make sure it's not a first generation vehicle. By the way do your own homework, every dealer will tell you that the problem has been rectified on their vehicle

The "Fortuner issue" relates to a fairly well publicized 'bouncy' rear response' under gravel road conditions which could - in severe situations - contribute to loss of vehicle control, on the 1st generation of vehicles.

Although Toyota has been lambasted via he internet and word of mouth, nobody has been able to formally prove (or disprove) the effect. Certain modifications to suspension has been claimed to 'resolve' the issue, though, and the later generation Fortuner (sporting a different suspension setup) has been well received.

According to the article the cause of the accident is not known, and it would be quite presumptuous to insinuate that this incident refers generically to "Fortuners".

There is a vast array of potentials that might have led / contributed to this incident, simply assuming "Fortuner" related causes is prejudicial, nonconstructive and sensationalist.

Where there's smoke there's fire.

They are cr@p and the issue has been (allegedly) resolved by electronics,

suspension mods and tyres. Thhe basic vehicle is the same. They're

hiding the problem rather than solving it...

More likely making it worse by giving a false sense of security...

This is truly sad. condolences to the family.

however, to blame it on the vehicle is a bit of a long shot don't you think? Driving after a 24 hour mtb marathon is hardly a good idea... concentration levels and reaction times are down by a lot.

This is tragic and has deeply saddened all of us.

We are in touch with Netcare and will receive details later today so that we can offer the family all the support that we can.

I wonder whether this was a 1st gen fortuner. Did an animal jump in front of it? Did the driver fall asleep, or perhaps swerve to avoid oncoming traffic in his own lane? Was a falling brick thrown from a oncoming vehicle through its windscreen? Or perhaps a tyre blew? Perhaps there was a pedestrian involved, or a log fell from a truck? Could an oncoming vehicle have made a mistake in overtaking? Heart attack? Seizure? Sneeze? A bee/wasp sting? Fallen sigarette?

No, these are surely all impossibilities. It can only be 'the bouncy fortuner effect' I've heard of. Somewhere.

WOW.. how sad. so sorry to hear this..

A word of warning to all that read this. DONT DRIVE AFTER A 24 HOUR race

I drove myself home 50 km on a hot sunday afternoon after 24 hours of Wiesenhof 2 years ago after doing the solo cat and that was the nearest Ive ever been to not making it Home, God literraly kept me on the road.. It was a nightmare I couldnt keep my eyes open and I found myself swerving across the N1 and had no way to get home If Id just pull over(what I should have done)

I was lucky.

Mabe guys should start stating this warning on the 24 hour entry forms..
