Canyon Ultimate CF creaking noise....

I am at the end of my wits in regards to a creaking noise that my bike, a carbon Canyon Ultimate CF', seems to be giving out. Original thought was that it would be the bottom bracket, however this has now been rebuild probably about 4 times by a bikeshop! Subsequently the bottom bracket it can't be.

The creaking noise comes when I m climbing and really pushing it on the small chainring on the front. The same noise comes also when I m going flat out on the big chainring. It always seems to happen when I put a lot of power through the pedals.

The bikeshop has been more than amazing, trying everything possible what it could be, including tightening up the chainrings, lubricating every possible part of the bike. And i keep going back saying that the creaking noise is still there, and I feel rather idiotic that I have done so up to ten times. The bike seems still to ride smoothly and the bottom bracket feels just fine.

Any suggestions would be fantastic, as I m out of ideas and I don't like feeling idiotic constantly having to bother my local bikeshop.

I had a similar problem on my aluminium bike that also only manifested itself under max power.  After much lubing of all the obvious (pedals, bbs etc) I eventually discovered somewhat to my embarrassment that the creak actually originated in the head tube.  In my case the lower headset cup was too small for the headtube and was moving when I was putting pressure on the bars to increase pedal power.  The cup had been "fitted" by punching burrs on the outer surface to grip onto the tube.  These obviously wore down leading to the movement.

Not saying that this is your problem but the frame tubes definitely act as a sound box making these noises difficult to pin point.

How many spacers do you have between the headset and the bottom of the stem and what is the length in millimetres of these spacers?

Is there anti seize compound on the threads of the BB?

grease skewers, and check the litle allan key studs holding the rear derailler hanger are tight!!! i'v recently had similar experience to you... rebuilt just about everything on the bike, and it was the hanger!!!

I also have a Canyon Ultimate CF and also had an annoying creak which I swore came from the BB.  Every time I put some effort into a pedal stroke it creaked.  Took it back to my LBS and the mechanic was quite offended that I said his build was not good enough!

He regreased the pedals, as that was the only bit I installed myself, but the bike still squeeked.  In the end I realised my rearwheel wasn't properly fastened and after retightening the skewers the squeek disappeared!  The dropouts have a paint layer or something on them and you have to make sure the skewers are properly tightened and in place.  Hopefully this is your problem too.  I haven't had a sound from it since!

I have the exact same problem on my Santa Cruz Superlight dual suss!! Wow is it frustrating!! Going to be taking for a FULL service next week and hoping that will sort it out.

Although on different formats, I'll let you know what comes of it.

Thanks for all the advice, will work my way through my bike over the weekend trying out all possible suggestions and hopefully it will cure this diseased creaking noise.

I had the same problem, thought it was the BB, but my LBS found it to be the bearings in my rear wheel. Discovered this by changing the rear wheel at the LBS!

After taking it apart as much as I could with limited tools, it seems that the creaking noise was from the saddle. Took it for a quick spin up and down the road, putting all my weight into the pedals whilst seating and standing on front big and small chainring and it seems the noise is gone. However I m slightly dubious about this, as often only after the 35km mark the creaking appears.

So I guess tomorrow's Olympic Cycles/Pres Les "Journey 4 Sight 'n Service" Cycle Tour will have to do as my proper test ride. Feeling nervous as I ve done only one 50km cycle since 19th of December. I be in starting Group Z, looking for a slow way round! :)

Thanks for all the advice and hopefully it be a race without distorting noise effects.

End Result was that although the bike rolled very smoothly throughout

the 75km, on the small chainring on the front creaking noise would

appear when I would put a lot of power and weight through the

pedals/crank! But only when the chain was on the small chainring on the

front and middle to smallest chainring on the back! But not when going

up the hill at 18km/h on small chainring upfront and largest chainring

on the back.

Creaking was there when I was standing or sitting. Couldnt feel

anything wrong with the bike, except of course the creaking. Any

further suggesstions?

Have you tried riding your bike with a pair of wheels that is known not to creak? I've heard awful noises come from a pair of badly built wheels.
