Import duties on cycling goods

I brought in some Shimano sandals from the UK last year. Invoice must be clearly marked GIFT, and value must not exceed R1500.00. You are not charged VAT or import duty, They still tried to charge me VAT and duties and I had to phone the shipping agent and tell them to read the invoice properly!!

Should have been double for sandals.... Sandals??

Ja I knew of the tax on clothes, I was just surprised as it was genuinely a gift from my mom and it said so on the description. Suppose many people take a chance I dunno but none the less I’m glad it arrived.

Next time ask her to crumple it up, mess a little jamb on it and send it with a letter saying you left it there?

Sandals with cleats. Due to a MTB accident 3yrs ago that left me with a spina\l cord injury now ride a 3 wheel recumbent trike. Need to clip my feet in but cannot get my feet into shoes.

Let's see your recumbent Joe, sounds amazing, great you can still cycle.

Just waiting for batteries to arrive then will be fitting E-Assist. Need to be able to do more than the current 10Km and need help up hills!

If you are cycling with a check shirt, then you can pull off the sandals :P

Enjoy the bike when you charge her up.

I believe marking as “gift” hasn’t worked in forever. SARS don’t give a hoot about your birthday. They want their piece of the cake.

Hahaha! Maybe they misread it and assume it is a gift for them.

Anyone know what the total import fees would be on a set of wheels at the moment?

its based on the value of the wheels.

Value * ROE + 10% * 15% vat

Then you will pay the couriers admin/clearing charges, usually around R200-350.

Is the equation the same for bicycle tyres?
