Surely one should be able to apply some sort of coating over the stanchions. Definitely not impossible. But like Capricorn mentioned, specialized coatings like fox, rock shox, manitou uses is a different ball game.

I dont see why an industrial type clear coat cannot be used. Or even an enamel coating like what is being used in pots and pans these days.

A friend of mine specializes in high end car valets etc. He makes use of different types of polishes. One of them is a ceramic coating/polish which last about a year on a 4x4 with possible touch ups in between(all part of the application), The ceramic coating on car paint is to prevent scratches.

Coating is easy, keeping it within tolerance is not. When stanchions wear, material is removed, and that's where the issue comes in. A smooth running fit is a very tight tolerance band, and you're not going to get that right with any sort of consistency on a case-by-case basis.

I'm not stopping you from trying, I'm just telling you you're wasting your time. The amount of time and money you'll end up putting in to a substandard repair will end up costimg more than just replacing.

I've had a client who's made an attempt, but even visually the repair wasn't even close to accurate. I'm waiting for the newly worn fork to come in through the door any day now.
