A friend of mine has had a ticking sound coming from his bike for some months now. Many visits to the LBS and nobody can find the problem.

Then at the race for victory what do you know my bike starts making the same sound.

The sound normally comes at the bottom of the pedal stroke, so for most of the ride all you hear is tick tick tick tick and it becomes pretty irritating.

Does anyone have any idea what may be causing this?

Dirt, rust or corrosion between the BB shell and the BB itself. Remove BB, clean out both the frame and BB threads, wrap teflon plumber's tape around threads and replace.

Unfortunately you'll get dozens of suggestions and they're all pretty much valid. Start at a point and work through them all until the noise stops.

But it's not just about tightness, also about dirt between interfaces. Many bicycle interfaces are so poorly designed - for compatibility reasons we have to live with this legacy - that we have constant problems. The pedal/crank interface is antoher problematic one.

Strategely enough, bicycle evolutions sometimes does go the right way and we seem to be finally rid of the poorest attachment of them all - the quill stem. It was replaced by the theadless stem setup which is much much better, just about perfect in fact.

Could be the bolts attaching the chainrings to the spider that could be loose or one of the "nut" sections (the part coming from the back into which the screw turns) is broken. I had that problem. Took me a long time to find it.Embarrassed

Hey F@koff los my uit - stop hijacking my thread this is serious stuff. Welcome Back Delgado at least now I can cycle with someone who can hold a decent conversation and does not crash into my back wheel.

It really does seem that when the captain is away the team falls apart.

Marius, I had the same problem with my gear cable.  I was bitching and moaning about the funny noise my bike was making 2 rides after its service.  Couldn't figure out the problem as it was only when I was on the bike.  Someelse looked at it only to find the gear cable slightly in the way.  I was quite embarrassed for missing something so obvious.
