Bar-ends : Are they necessary

Tubeless

Recommended Posts

I used to find a bar end useful, it stopped my glass slipping off the edge. Did nothing for my cycling though, and I still got numbness in my hands and the rest of my body.

If numbness occurred in your rest of your body you are using it incorrectly or attaching to the wrong place on your bike :(

they are very important ....... what else is that lone tree branch going to grab onto and get a closer look, causing me to dismount into the section of track that is treeless?

i connected a section of fencing, yes my bike did stop dead and no i did not.

Not for me. Used them when I started riding and had one incident with a tree and some single track... Bought a nice piece of real estate in Howick! Now they live in a box in my garage...

If they work for you, they work for you.

They work for me. I recently upgraded to Ergon...Ergo...whatever, ones and they're the shiz. The best ever.

I can't stand those sticky Cane Creek barends. They grab my lycra shorts when I walk past a parked bike. Always sticking onto something.

I use them on both my mtb's (road and 'racer') stubby ones, do find them more comfortable when climbing, the same config really as hoods on a road bike. Had some neat Easton carbon ones but they were not hardy enough could not take the pace and fell apart. Replaced with some Momsen Designs which are really well made, but these hybrids are on my CRC Wishlist:

I have them on flat bars... and cant ride without them, especially on extreme steep climbs.

I found holding on to them during a steep incline results in too much nose lift, this results in losing control and moving weight forward to compensate which results in losing traction.

I tend to get better feel/traction when holding the bar normally with elbows tucked lower than hands and pulling back and down.

I took mine off after getting it as a gift...

Prefer the classic grip.

And I never MTB for more than 2 hrs.

The pros nevva use bar ends.

Must be a weight reduction strategy... <_<

Those bastards! I should have known there was a reason they were beating me.

Thank for all the replies..... :)

I had them on my previous bike and sometimes used them.

Have not done any long rides yet. (2hrs+)

My new bike (Anthem 29) has got nice wide bars. On my first few rides I experienced quite a bit of numbness in the hand, Not any more and I am quite enjoying the width of the bars. I don't really want to give up any of that width to fit the bar-ends.

Suppose I should try. Can always remove them again.

The also add another position for your hands, giving ways to relieve the pressure point on your hands.

I can't go without them.

I have the Cane Creek ones and they are great as they also seem to have a certain degree of stickiness to them - which is great for maintaining control without having to frantically clutch to them in rough terrain.

The downside, however, is that they tend to also stick to things next to the track whilst riding. Fences, trees, wheelchairs, small children next to the road....you need to exercise extreme caution on singletrack, but I do believe they are worth the extra concentration required.
