is there a ideal saddle postion for road racing?

level ' date=' slightly up or slightly down?

or does it depend on frame size and saddle height?

or is it just personal taste?
[/quote']

The basic rule is to have the saddle positioned level, this would be a good starting position and if it?s not comfortable then you need to make small adjustments until comfortable. Tilting the saddle down or up can have an effect on other aspects such as saddle height, weight on arms ect...<?:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Saddle should be adjusted primarily to obtain:

 1. Forward / Aft position - Correct knee position in relation to ball of your foot when in the 9 o clock position.

2. Saddle height ? as per various methods and formulas AND personal experimentation, to ensure a smooth and efficient pedal stroke while under typical riding / racing conditions.

3. Saddle tilt ? Nose down or up, depending on your personal requirements, typically start off with the saddle in a level position and then make small adjustments as required to keep things comfy.

Ok...let me try. Women have boobs' date=' men dont. Do you think that might cause the shoulder pain? I mean if I had to ride with two apples, oranges, watermelons(take your pick) strapped to my chest, I'm sure my shoulders would pain aswell?[/quote']

why would your shoulders pain from that???

go for a proper set up i think....i did when i still had some silly saddle that came with the bike - it was fine until i changed the saddle. The new saddle had a different shape and although we fit it in the exactly same position as the previous one a few months after I was getting pain in my hip bones and what not - I enquired bout it and it is in the expert's oppinion that it's too far back....

just an example

I think saddles are too personal and you gotta find a position that suits you....think generalising like for men like this and women like that won't be too correct....so try and move it

I sit back on my saddle a lot as that's the way I conquer climbs, that said level for me is best an downwards will make me slide too much and a bit up will lets face it just kill me

bored girl' date='

did shifting your saddle forward help with pain in hip bones?

i get it as well.

The expert's oppinion came in a bit too late

I had already purchased a new saddle.....as I thought that might eliminate some of the discomfort

Been using it on my rd bike though (and been cheating on my mtb a lot.....) so as soon as I hop on my baby I will move the saddle....he sorted my knee problem out so I trust it will be much better....no harm in trying :)

Bobbie -

WW you mention about putting too much pressure on handle bars etc. I get the most uncomfortable pain between my shoulder blades after about 80km.. its almost as if I need to extend my neck in order to get some relief... I have never heard any of the guys complain about this but some of the girls I ride with get it too, so much so that they take 2 myprodol's before even starting a race.. Dont want to resort to that...

Your problem could be due to the top tube / stem length. WSD bikes are designed with a shorter top tube, therefor you don't have to stretch to reach your handle bars. It might help to shorten your stem

Broker, that was my problem with my first bike, the top tube was too long for my short body and you can't move the saddle forward because then that set-up is wrong.

So Bobbie this might be expensive or try get a shorter stem, just remember that your handling of the bike becomes a little harder the shorter the stem is. Keep this in mind when buying your next bike, it will make a huge difference. Rather buy a bike one smaller than necessary and have the saddle stem longer than having to reach. But it might be worth checking the saddle as well, which if that is wrong it is a lot easier and cheaper to fix. Good luck and hope you come right!!

Walked past a girl/young woman in our local Mall the other day. Had a tight fitting top on, and the correct wares to fill it out too. Thumbs%20UpWink.

Written in bold letters on the front of the top, where you obviously had to look at, what with all the wares on display, were "STOP STARING, GROWN YOUR OWN". Thought this to be hilarious.

Sorry, had to share this with you, as this thread was going South in any case.

I rekon you must have a slight bend in your knee and just put it where ever you feel is comfortable. go to a cycle shop like cycle lab and they will set you up perfectly. my advice would be not to take to much advice and find out what works for you! smileys/smiley1.gif" align="middle" /> Quicksilv3r2007-11-06 05:02:52

Remember to measure from the sitbones to the tip.  Some saddles the middle is higher than the sit-bones part.

Err, I need a picture.... Confused

Don't measure middle-back to middle-front.

Measure side-back to middle-front.
