  1. Seeing more SA flags on my early morning rides.
  2. Who else is thinking of the "wood collector" ? Very sad that these creatures are as regular as the weed in our gardens ....
  3. Did a site inspection on Thursday next to Muizenberg .... an attendee opens a set of doors to the South .... a gust of wind almost knocked the doors back into his face .... It was a nice stiff little breeze ....
  4. Also the road down into Gamkaskloof, Die Hel. Not sure can be done with today's obsession with health and safety .....
  5. Thank climb out of Wuppertal ..... better pack in your climbing legs .... But what a lovely area to visit !!!
  6. That helps ! 👍 I enjoyed it when we had projects in the Northern Cape and I could cycle on the farms. Chappies - outside of the CTCT I only do it on weekdays, when my afternoon meetings finish in Noordhoek. My appetite for risk certainly dont extend to doing this during high traffic times ..... Doing gravel around the Northern suburbs means you are going to do a fair amount of tar as part of any route. As much as I agree with your sentiment, many of us have to ride a fair bit of tar.
  7. Lots of 4x4 routes on the farms. Been a few years, but was not gravel bike friendly then ... or at least plan on hike a bike in a few spots. Would like to know if the farms have embraced MTB ...
  8. And miss out on .... . Bainskloof . Franschhoek . Helshoogte . Chappies ... endless list of gems ... Heck, even the bit of tar to get to the trails .....
  9. Hope you get your program back on track. My friend is also training for this event, and had a brief scare with back issues ....
  10. . Musical chairs .... My biokineticist introduced the park walking to my overall program to get the balance sorted between the different muscle groups .... makes sense, but also means the one group of muscles after the other are activated. Truly musical chairs as the pain points dance around ..... BUT, looking past the short term pain, it is amazing to experience the benefits as the various supporting muscles start doing their work. That horrible pain "inside" the knee is kept at bay. I get to be active .... what more can one ask for ? The only pain while walking alternates between shins, calves, quads, hammies and glutes .... interesting to see how these points move about during the event, and how it changes as my gym works kicks in .... progress is slow and steady !! And being able to walk faster than the slow runners ..... hiehie ....
  11. Enjoyed a series or Park runs (walks) dring winter. Progressed from 5 to 15km. Doing another on 24 September, part of their series on public holidays. Though the emphasis now is to get bike fit for Winelands on 12 October. Then to find a balance between these two mistresses .... Working on getting my walking pace down to 8:30/minute, currently at 8:45 for a 5km. The 15km was done at 9:49/km (given the rain and slippery terrain this was actually not too bad) .... too slow to finish a half marathon before cut off time .... Plan going forward .... keep doing the TrailFun park run series. And keep working at my pace sessions around the dam .....
  12. Oooo so nearly had an incident with the railway line outside Franschhoek this weekend, on the way back. Going into Franschhoek the crossing is as I remember ... tricky angle, but sort of level. On the way out I was at speed, and a truck next to me ..... last second I notice what appears to be a new layer of tar which raised the road above the track .... nicely beveled off at an angle .... absolutely perfect to grab a bike tyre. I hopped the front wheel over the first rail ... whole bike shook as the rear wheel almost got grabbed into the rail. It was violent enough that I was looking at by rear wheel for a while checking that it was still running true.
  13. What is your road rides like, hill wise ? When I spend too much time on the trainer and road rides It takes 1 or 2 rides to get the "flow" back for MTB. Our roads have enough hills, so no issue with this. But yes, 20km MTB trails takes more out of you than 20km road. Anything from the increased tyre drag, to constantly slowing down and accelerating again on technical terrain ..... Identify your weaknesses .... and you can target it and improve on either road or MTB
  14. First long ride after winter .... NICE to be out again. Spring has sprung .... well, in a few spots .... And with a new season comes new options .... Essence is no more .... Bootlegger is now trading from this address. Good service, and very lekka food. Uhm jaa .... my sitbones are not happy with me .... fit and saddle fit aint the same thing !!
  15. https://bikerumor.com/wolf-tooth-components-bike-tire-pressure-app-tire-inflation/ Will be good to hear what the experienced Hubbers say on this one
  16. Seeing a couple of kids and parents at the Leat skills park on ebikes. The modern version of the family doing motoX ....
  17. We noted over a few years with the school series, and weekend rides with kids and parents, that gears is "problematic" .... specifically primary school kids. Kids seems to get the hang of the gears on the "training rides". As soon as the ride gets busy, anf they get tired .... nope, gears are long forgotten. Those that get to grips with the gears, in the heat of the battle, are the ones destined for podium.

    Shimano

Bent hanger can drive you up the wall, irrespective of the brand of derailures ....

Well worth a try. I am running 1x11 Shimano on all 4 our bikes. On the one bike I had an issue shortly after installation. Did it myself, and tried to save a few minutes by re-using the old outer cable .... Once I replaced it with a new inner cable it has been working perfectly for close on 8 000 km. On the full suss I had one "scare" one morning. Left home and about 1km further, first downhill, the gears just would not work and the chain was drooping .... I released the clutch, and manually worked the system through a couple of open/close actions. The gears worked perfectly for the rest of the ride. Clearly the clutch just needed a service. Few years back I had two bikes, one after the other. Both on sram GX .... life is just too short for that amount of fiddling. When Knipe_Racing and later Mark just cant get these infernal things to behave for more than 500km at a time .... neeeeee dankie, nie weer nie.
  20. Too true. Friday afternoon we service and test the bike for Sayurday's SPUR race .... just too find his cycling shoes no longer fit. Mad scramble to get new shoes before the shops close .... I miss those days .... now it is computer games ....
  21. Crappy section of road that. Too narrow. BUSY !! Horribly high curbstone. Sadly this applies to many of the parallel roads linking to Wellington street. Spidey senses in overdrive along that section
  22. Our experience ... also bought the best Momsen 20" .... also thinking it would be an investment for years. Salesmen must love parents at this stage. Back to reality. 13 months .... that was it. Time for a 24" Okay, could have bought the 20" a bit earlier, so maybe 18 months. The 24" lasted about 15 months. Just as we got used to this .... he stopped growing for some 2 years, with the 24-9er lasting longer than expected You just never know with kids growth spurts.
  23. Single speed, rigid fork ... PERFECT ENJOY
  24. So just 42km then ... 😋 Did it save the ride ? Or do you loose all data when the battery goes to sleep ?
