  1. Very true. Our bi-weekly park runs often reach even permit limits. And YES, Stellenbosch officials regularly show up to check the event and permit compliance. Have seen them cap day entries and turn away people at two recent events ... simply have to enter online to ensure an entry I entered the Gun Run 21km when it opened up. It took all of 7 days to sell out the 10 000 permitted entries. Then we look at cycling that is advertising entries until the day after the event ...
  2. I am getting the Decathlon Kiprun unit next week. Optional 1 or 2 liter bladder, with various pockets along the front. Looking forward to trying it out.
  3. Sorry .... here you go. FUN ride to work. Left home with a clean bike ... not so clean when I got to work. BEST way to greet the new day.
  4. Seems Giro del Mar is already cancelled. "Point to point" racing adds a level of logistics many casual riders dont want to deal with. That said, the events scene is looking very bad ..... we loved the plaas-bazaar events in the Boland (MTB) ..... hardly any tried again after 2020 ....
  5. Durbie Dash might just help to ease the hurt a bit .... and also a World Champs seeding event. 99er seems to be stepping up their MTB and Gravel game the last few years. Not sure, but think the PPA event early in 2026 is just road.
  6. Have a look at Karoorack
  7. Commuter mark seems the big market share. There have also been lots of posts on BikeHub about stolen bikes that show up at the big brand pawn shops. There was (possibly still is) a loop hole in the system. The shop wont buy a product without proof of ownership, but they will provide a loan against it. When the loan defaults in 30 days the product becomes their's to re-sell .... Takes about 6 weeks from theft until it lands on the sales floor. By all accounts a real pain to PROVE ownership !! Cops and insurance are not interested to follow this up .... Sad reality is that it is going to cost a pretty penny to replace those bikes.
  8. We were on top of Ou Kaapse Weg on Wednesday. The booms to enter Silvermine is still locked. Even the parking area for cars is still off limits. So certainly no cycling in that area. Sad to see fire damage ....
  9. Seems like the same date as the previous years, for Two Oceans. So should attract the same crowd. Hope they can bounce back from this years bad press ....
  10. Just a trail run .... but some are simply more memorable ....
  11. Moving goalpost .... A typical 250W motor and 600W.h battery in a typical aluminium frame full suspension is in the order of 25kg, before saddle bag, water bottles, etc .... So the race started to reduce weight ... carbon frames ... smaller motors ... smaller batteries ... wide selection now well under 20kg. Another race is ongoing for more powrr and especially more range .... a 900W.h battery ADDS a lot of weight .... Many bikes has a key that makes swopping out the battery a matter of seconds. So really easy to drastically reduce the weight. Much easier to lift the bike onto the carrier, and much less force on towbar.
  12. Jip, letter of the law vs good engineering .... just a few of the considerations of a good engineering approach: - at what point does the point load on the ball start impacting steering, hugely dependent on each vehicles geometry - frame strength - actual strength of the towbar system and mounting A well designed system easily loads a motorcycle, a real bike not an e-bike, on the towball. A poorly designed system can, and HAVE, snapped chassis. A Friday topic on its own .....
  13. "tow limit" is the "pulling force" ... mostly in a straight line with the fixing points of the towbar system to the chassis. "Ball weight limit" refers to the "downward force" on the ball. This has a significant torque effect on the fixing points to the frame, thus the limit. On an old school 4x4 with a strong "ladder chassis" it is possible to fit a custom towbar to maximise the tow and ball-point-loads. Even so, be carefull as very few bakkies comes with properly rated bolts ... so have the system checked before pushing the limits. With the typical modern car that is made from tin-foil ..... be CAREFUL to exceed manufacturer's limits. I have seen how the mounting points deform when the point loads are exceeded. The "tow ball" is not the weak point, but rather the "towbar-frame" that is bolted to the vehicle and then the vehicle frame's limitations.
  14. Hiehie .... my experience with 3-speed dates back some 50 years to the good old Chopper.
  15. @Titan Racing Bikes can certainly provide feedback on any link between Sprocket and Titan. As well as any info we can possibly ask.
  16. Scott's price is based on better quality and lighter frame Thus they get to use slightly lower spec parts. Literally just a few hundred rand to add trigger shifters later (if it comes with grip shift). The rest is much of a muchness on these bikes. Kids will benefit much more from the lighter frame than from the components. The Nino factor comes at a cost .... 😉
  17. Tip .... IF you get a rack that works and the weight is an issue .... removing the ebike battery takes seconds on most models.
  18. CycleLab or Marvel ? (or both) 🫣 Anybody that has been in this game long enough had some good and some not-so-good experiences at CycleLab .... large group ... couple of good sales staff .... more casuals .... so luck of the draw about the service. Get to know the staff at your local outlet and wait for the knowledgable staff to assist. Marvel is the "house brand" of Chris Willemse Cycles, part of Cycle Lab for about 7 years already. So from bikes to a wide range of extras you can get the Marvel equivalent. Already said I am a Titan fanboy, but a well serviced Marvel should give decent service.

    timing chips

Previous timing companies went belly up 3 or 4 years ago. Last two years saw a new group coming through, with new chips.
  20. No problems with hydraulic brakes. Kid will learn to modulate the brake quickly, and a very handy skill to pick up as soon as possible. Suspension .... rather concentrate on getting the tyre pressure spot on. Ride behind the kid on a corrugated surface - the bike should not be "hopping". It hops when the pressure is too high. Due to their weight, or lack of it, tyre pressures may well be below 1 bar. Gears .... if they are going to start joining the schools series, then they will need a few gears at the back to keep up. The grips shifts work for a short while before it gets sticky ... upgrade to trigger shift for a few hundred rand.
  21. In this price range .... Speak to @RobertWhitehead about decent 2nd hand bikes for mom and dad. Alternatively .... Dad .. Titan gives best value for money. Avoid the entry level Trek ... friend paid these school fees recently. Mom .... you dont get decent new bikes in this price. A heavy clonker that needs constant maintenance really is not the way to go ..... rather speak to @RobertWhitehead Kids ... 16" ... much of a muchness .... decent price in the right colour and everybody is happy. 20" .... I am a Titan fan. But the Avelanche is in the same segment .... some days the one is better, tomorrow the other .... my heart votes for the Titan. But it can be a close call. Get the better spec 20" from what is available on the day .... this bike will be handed down and needs to last.
  22. As above ... just a normal membership. The other option is to buy a day license for each race .... if you do more than about 5 CSA santioned events per year it is cheaper and less schlep to just buy the annual membership. Membership is for the next 365 days. So NO need to wait for January for a calender year membership. Same membership applies to road and MTB races ... most probably to gravel events.
  23. Holdfast Uhmmm those small bikes grow up fast .... I have had to redo custom racks as the little one is now heading for a L 29" .... plan way ahead with the spacing of the bikes
  24. These were handed out at CTCT..... they actually suggested giving these to NON cycling friends and relatives ....
