  1. The old SPUR series is now here - Home - Schools Cycling South Africa Each province has their own program for the year. Normally only published a bit later though ... The Trailseeker series also has a kids series, though this is probably just one event close to you .... still very nice.
  2. Please say Hi if you see the toppie on the commuter ebike ...
  3. Well done @Titan Racing Bikes Would also be nice to see some local involvement with Reach for Rainbows. Very inspirational story of people with full time jobs reaching out to ladies in cycling .... Sure, exposure and all that ... still hoping there is a way to invest in local talent.
  4. Ouch .... the worst feeling when the brakes give out ... you are too fast ... AND anthor steep downhill section .... I spent about 2 hours at the medics. My bloodpressure tanked, took forever to recover. Only figured out a few weeks later why .... brake discs had worn below the minimum level.
  5. Been doing Helshoogte twice a month. No issues. Touch wood
  6. LOTS of cyclists out and about today. With the World Champs in 7 weeks the roads will get even busier ... Perfect weather for cycling. For a moment it looked like it was going to start raining at Helshoogte .... Just LOVE this coffee stop ontop of Helshoogte.
  7. Bike width is THEE decider, with all of these brands (even Thule). Thule only recently increased the width of the racks to accommodate boost size MTB frames. No idea which of the others have done so, and when. Maybe try to confirm the width of the new Thule, then check any other racks to make sure it will work. Of the others .... Holdfast is proudly South African, and supply to all bike shops. So parts are easily and readily available With the kids bikes any rack should work .... for a few years. But so many kids are riding full sized 29" before going to high school ....
  8. ENJOY your commute. Sure, a few niggles in the beginning. But once you have your routine it is VERY nice !! My work limits when I can commute, as I often drive out to sites. But when I can commute I LOVE it. PS - Some nice gems in this thread -
  9. THIS is my bucket list item ... riding all the Bains passes. I have a very old book at home about all their passes ..... our next holidays may well be planned around this.
  10. Same applies to W2W. A friend did it from about 2013, a group of old varsity buddies that used this event as an annual get together. By 2016 the price started creaping up ... By 2018 they noted a significant increase in the weekend cost. Not just the race entry, but everything around it. By 2019 it became plain expensive - compared to what it was 3 or 4 years earlier. Sadly, these events are BUSINESS .... build a market, then start increasing the prices .... As many have posted above, it is now at a point where we have to take a step back and plan which events we want to attend, as the cycling budget only stretches so far. 2024 saw a number of races canceled due to low entry numbers ..... Cederberg ... many of these routes are available for weekend riders, just look at this on Strava. Couple of friends are doing regular long rides, sometimes 2 to 3 days, in the area. These high event fees may prompt more riders to do their own thing.
  11. @Hairy can put you in contact with these commuters
  12. CBR Durbanville
  13. Carbon Bike Repairs Durbanville has done some good work for us .... if you are in the Western Cape
  14. Last year a double cab bakkie pushed past the official ... I had to brake hard not to T-bone it. I was more worried about the riders behind me ... it can go wrong so quickly.
  15. Thanks gents. I have spoken to Thomas. They have working wheel ON units. Well priced for others that may interested !! I am looking for a non-working wheel OFF unit. It is purely to mount the bike while doing a bike fit. It is purely an experiment at this stage. So if anybody has a broken unit taking up space ....
  16. Along the same lines .... as much as it is not the same. Vines and Views have a sponsor for the Skaapkop climb. Those that want to participate must load their Strava just after the race. Fastest for that segment, on the day, gets the prize. Potential option if you get sponsors on board for the Trilogy, or any other ride.
  17. @NicholasH will the Durbanville sportsgrounds serve as the "final point" ? (though the finish line is as we enter Durbanville) We circled the sports grounds area on Saturday. Nice little leg warmer from to get to the start. Less nice little climb to get back home .... 😬 Hopefully we can drop down from Durbanroad towards the start without going through the sports grounds.
  18. Ortho ... fisio ... biokineticist Interesting interaction between these three. Normal, healthy young individual with no pre-existing conditions ... and a clear cut injury. Then a cookie cutter standard rehab program may well work. IF the individual manages to do the exercises correctly. IF it was this easy, then fisio's and bio's would not exist. Few years back I was fortunate to get an orthopedic surgeon that was not knife-happy. After the scan he talked me through the results. Torn meniscus, but not bad enough for him to operate (his words). He rather recommended I see a bio. So many "injuries" are referred pains, and the sore point is not the cause. Fisio's can be excellent in tracing these back to the origin. Massage, needles, acoustic-treatment, etc are a few of the tools in their kit to treat the pain and help you regain mobility. My personal experience have been that they only give basic stretch type exercises to continue the healing process. (pretty sure they can and do give more exercises as the case may require) The last few years I have gained a new found respect for bio's. Not for pain treatment, but to look at the individual and then guide you through tailored exercises. These exercises look past recovery, towards strengthening muscle groups for long term better quality of life. All said, if you are an old gym rat and know the basic exercises, then you might need less time with either of these. If you are not familiar with gym exercises and the correct posture .... downloading "standard" exercises can be dangerous. As with all things medical, no one answer that works for everybody.
  19. As the year resets and more Hubbers are back and reading .... I am looking for a broken wheel-off-trainer. Broken electronics .... noisy bearings .... these would be perfect doners for a nice experiment.
  20. Lot depends on the usable good bone. My femer fracture was close to the knee. Only two screws on the short section, 4 on the other side. Does mean it is marginally weaker, and a few more days/weeks recommended for the bone to heal properly Still beat 6+ weeks in traction ... PS - motorcyle ... got taken out by a student test driving a car. '86, no pics of those X.rays
  21. I must take a video of you two jokers ... 🤣🤣
  22. Clearly the two us dont belong the right WA groups .... This thread is the only info I have on this ride .... and frankly way more questions than answers. Sure, very happy to hear the latest input, and that this will reach a wider audience. The lack of info on the "desitnation" and the "return trip" details .... uhm jaaa .... NOT being negative !! It is as simple as that there are questions that needs answers. My only gripe .... bought a bike from Shaun a few weeks back, and I am not on his list for this (or other) event(s). Okay, I bought from the other Sean in the same shop
  23. Looking at the bike it was clear the caliper had to move. Not that obvious how ... THANKS @thebob
