  1. Often zips need a bit of maintenance . If the zipper slide is still there it might just need a slight bit of squeezing together (very carefully ) Also use a silicon spray on the zip once its closed and spray from top to bottom , then slide the zip open and closed a few times .
  2. I weighed myself this morning and was amazingly surprised with the scale showing 86.3kg down from the 90 i have been on for a while . I said i would only weigh myself when i hit my 100 day challenge but i put a pair of jeans on this morning and they were lose around my gut so that's what prompted me to weigh myself . Im back in the game but i have my birthday coming up and having a family braai with my sons so over eating on that day is always the order of the day . . Ill be riding hard the next week to get the weight down .
  3. Were about do you stay and what time do you get on the road . I do some rides with Bicycle Line and some solo on Saturdays and Sundays going out East towards Jatniel or Bapsfontein and back towards Witfield gives me 75 km .
  4. I have not put my weight on the spread sheet for two months because im not dropping in weight . I started a 100 day challenge to ride every day without skipping a day even if its only a 10 km ride . Im on day 88 at 4106 km at an average of 24kph and 36,457m of climbing . Im not really watching my food intake as i eat what i feel like so a lot of the wrong foods . I also like my fizzy drinks ( no alcohol ) and my wife loves baking so there is always some sort of lekker snack around to have with tea . I am feeling strong when i ride and dont shy away from any organized ride in terms of distance , elevation or predicted average . I tell them im a 60/40/10 rider . 60 down hill ,40 flat roads and 10 uphill . Ill put my weight up on the 100th day just to get me motivated again . Good going to all the losers so far and to those not losing dont despair .
  5. That would be rather excessive for a cyclist doing 1000 km a month . I do more than 1200 km per month using both road and Mtb mixed ..
  6. MANY of us ride with tubes. Just get tubes with removable valve cores (which the local CL, aka CWC, does not stock). I had to buy these tubes from Evobikes. Remove the core, add 100 to 150 ml of sealant to the tube - "racers" will certainly use less, us mere mortals dont worry about the slight bit of extra weight. Now you dont have to worry about thorn QUOTE I was asked this question by a fellow cyclist who bought a entry level bike for his son and then did a Tubeless conversion which cost him R2000 .My answer was as above but then thinking about it later i was wondering what happens in the case of larger hole that needs to be plugged . Will the plug being pushed in seal the tube or will there be movement and the plug not doing its thing correctly and leak inside the tyre . MANY of us ride with tubes. 7. Keeping a road /Mtb roadworthy for everyday use . This question is for the non technical , non handyman or lazy bike owner who has one bike or more that gets used daily or very often . The cost of using your LBS for servicing , fitting , fixing or even cleaning must be quite costly . It would be interesting to hear from cyclists as to what needs to be budgeted for . I know some months must be more costly if tyres , chains , cassettes , or even chain rings are replaced . .
  8. For those who have there bikes inside and have a dedicated room for them , do you use you handle bars , saddle and top tube as clothes hangers for the sweaty kit you have just taken off and still will wear it the next day . I have a wash basket into which the dirty mtb bike kit gets dropped in for the wash . A big advantage to this method of drying out my kit is that the room has a particular nasty smell , dirty mtb bike , rubber tyres hanging in a cupboard ,, sweaty cycling shoes and what ever else stuck to me while riding . This keeps my wife out of it and never knows what's new , old or being replaced .
  9. Yes i agree i wonder why its taken so long for this concept to be built and perfected . In the 60s when i started cycling i had a Raliegh carbon steel 26' bike with Sturmey Archer 3 speed rear hub gearing as my school transport . When i got my first DHC racing bike the Raliegh became my experimental toy . I adapted a 5 speed cluster ( Cassette ) with a rear Simplex Derailleur onto the Sturmey archer hub which gave me a bigger ranch of gears than my then DHC with a 52/48 X15 to 18 cluster . The problem with it was that all my mods on it were homemade in my dads workshop and were not that precise ,so axles extension broke and the little pulling rod that went into the axle and changed the inner planetary gears was always snapping . Needless to say i had a unique piece of kit that was the envy of my mates .
  10. When it comes to CLASSICS , bikes , cars , motor bikes , collectable items there is one principle that i always apply ' Willing SELLER willing BUYER "
  11. Yesterday on my training ride i had to really brake hard on a very steep down hill . My front pads were due for change and i felt the vibration then the noise of metal on metal . I went to Cycle East to buy Shimano pads but no stock only later in the week . I had a worn pair of pads better than what was in the caliper . I replaced them but also decided to bleed the brakes , a bad move the short pipe from the syringe had a crack in it and i lost the fluid to quickly and did not have more to replace . I took my bike to Cycle East today to bleed the brakes . An hour later i was back and to my surprise they had replaced the pads with better used pads than i had put in , bleed the brakes all for R100 . Supporting a LBS is definitely worth doing because of these small favor's that come your way . Thanks Kelly and bike techy Thomas . .
  12. Im a Hi Veld rider very rarely get out to ride the steep ,long hills you guys have in CPT and KZN .On average im a 85 kg person but ride every day ( retired ) 50 km at about 28kph .On my daily route i climb 500m and treat each one of those hill as "Alp du ez " . I go as hard at it from the bottom no matter how long it is . My longest climb is 3km with average gradient of 6%. .When i lose weight (to +_80 kg ) with the leg strength I've built up makes climbing a pleasure . . My advise is ride the hills you have on your routes as hard as possible , work on loosing the weight at least 4 to 6 weeks before the event , maintain it , train the way you were before losing the weight and you will ride that tour easily . I rode those vets 4 day Tours and yes they were hill , hills , hills even the ones in Harrismith because we went into the mountains towards Clarence and past the Sterkfontein Dam .. The Kroonstad winner was Lenny van Heerdan and he was a huge man ( Jan Ulrich build ). .
  13. Thanks Hubbers , i really put the cat among the pigeons with this question but i think its given a lot of us a good idea as to what will work best for your personal ability .I decided to take advice from many suggestions and that is to leave my saddle height as is and enjoy the comfort as that is what seems to be the general consensus .
  14. I have a 45 km route i ride daily of which 75% is in residential area the other 25% take me on main roads . I go past 10 schools on this route so only get on the road at 8 am to avoid the mommy's ,granny's and grandads doing the school run . i have a few pet hates ( Rants ) of drivers who i share the road with . , 1) Cars passing you and almost touching you with their mirrors 2)Cars passing you just before they need to turn left 3) Cars passing you just before a stop street or traffic light and stopping so close to the pavement you cannot get past 4)Cars not signaling when approaching a traffic light that's green for them and I'm waiting in the middle to turn and then also turn the same way . 5) Cars making a U Turn in a narrow road while you are nearly on top of them , and its takes them 10 tries to get turned 6)Revering out of their own driveway with out looking left or right . Im no angel on the road on my bike but im very observant and even more careful since my last crash .
  15. I have ridden 175mm cranks my whole life , on road , track and now Mtb . I recently bought a Dura Ace group set with 172.5 length cranks . I have been riding them for about 2 months on my road bike and feel comfortable and have no niggles in my legs . My Mtb still has 175 cranks . Do i leave the saddle on my road bike as is or should i raise it the 2,5mm difference . Will it help anyway or i just leave well alone . .
  16. I have had the same spinning bike (Raliegh ) for more than 30 years . At times during my off bike years i would start riding it at 125 kg . Im a serious spinner on my spin bike and vary my riding to spinning at 120 rpm to pushing hard against resistance at 60rpm . Never have i felt that these cranks would bend or give me a bottom bracket problem . I serviced regularly and the only consumable i replaced was the chain which had stretched and was jumping the front chaining. Without photos this claim is BS. .
  17. How about songs with weird titles and even more weird band names . This one won me many a beer when sitting with mates trying to out do one another with weird names . Sniff and Tears with Drivers Seat
  18. That is insane , their bike handling skills are beyond perfect .
  19. Had a good Feb training 26 of the 28 days with an average of 45 km per day . I did not watch my food intake that well and had a few too many slices of banana bread and chocolate cake ( my wife is diabetic so i eat most of it ) Our scale gave in ( 25 years old ) so i actually weighed myself on Thursday at the vet as we had to fetch one of our dogs . Im trying to do a 100 day challenge of riding every day . A friend of mine just completed his and did 5085km .
  20. A recognized brand has a Neutral PH (SABS 825 ). A cheap brand or back yard chemical company add salt to thicken it .
  21. Depends on were you are situated . Try Andrew 0823336406 or 0716899406
  22. My son who supplies medical equipment uses UBER to collect from him . He puts it on the back seat an the customer gets it right at his front door . Its unmolested in transport by the courier company , who dont give a rats ass about " Fragile , Hazardous , Delicate , Handle with Care or This side up " stickers .
