  1. That looks like 24 spoke hub and rim so yes it should be a 2 cross lace to give it strength.
  2. Down slightly from last month but not what i expected . Im doing about 1350km a month with a calorie burn of about 1600 daily but eating too many times a day . After my morning 2.5hrs ride (+_ 50km ) i have a bowl ( one cup of oats with yogurt ). and then as my day progresses im in the fridge having a sip of cold drink or a piece of chocolate . My meals are normal and at regulated times but before bed i love a bowl of ice-cream or pudding my wife has made . So my calories burn comes to naught with my daily snacking . I think winter is going to be a challenge to keep the loss going .
  3. Often zips need a bit of maintenance . If the zipper slide is still there it might just need a slight bit of squeezing together (very carefully ) Also use a silicon spray on the zip once its closed and spray from top to bottom , then slide the zip open and closed a few times .
  4. I weighed myself this morning and was amazingly surprised with the scale showing 86.3kg down from the 90 i have been on for a while . I said i would only weigh myself when i hit my 100 day challenge but i put a pair of jeans on this morning and they were lose around my gut so that's what prompted me to weigh myself . Im back in the game but i have my birthday coming up and having a family braai with my sons so over eating on that day is always the order of the day . . Ill be riding hard the next week to get the weight down .
  5. Were about do you stay and what time do you get on the road . I do some rides with Bicycle Line and some solo on Saturdays and Sundays going out East towards Jatniel or Bapsfontein and back towards Witfield gives me 75 km .
  6. I have not put my weight on the spread sheet for two months because im not dropping in weight . I started a 100 day challenge to ride every day without skipping a day even if its only a 10 km ride . Im on day 88 at 4106 km at an average of 24kph and 36,457m of climbing . Im not really watching my food intake as i eat what i feel like so a lot of the wrong foods . I also like my fizzy drinks ( no alcohol ) and my wife loves baking so there is always some sort of lekker snack around to have with tea . I am feeling strong when i ride and dont shy away from any organized ride in terms of distance , elevation or predicted average . I tell them im a 60/40/10 rider . 60 down hill ,40 flat roads and 10 uphill . Ill put my weight up on the 100th day just to get me motivated again . Good going to all the losers so far and to those not losing dont despair .
  7. That would be rather excessive for a cyclist doing 1000 km a month . I do more than 1200 km per month using both road and Mtb mixed ..
  8. MANY of us ride with tubes. Just get tubes with removable valve cores (which the local CL, aka CWC, does not stock). I had to buy these tubes from Evobikes. Remove the core, add 100 to 150 ml of sealant to the tube - "racers" will certainly use less, us mere mortals dont worry about the slight bit of extra weight. Now you dont have to worry about thorn QUOTE I was asked this question by a fellow cyclist who bought a entry level bike for his son and then did a Tubeless conversion which cost him R2000 .My answer was as above but then thinking about it later i was wondering what happens in the case of larger hole that needs to be plugged . Will the plug being pushed in seal the tube or will there be movement and the plug not doing its thing correctly and leak inside the tyre . MANY of us ride with tubes. 9. Keeping a road /Mtb roadworthy for everyday use . This question is for the non technical , non handyman or lazy bike owner who has one bike or more that gets used daily or very often . The cost of using your LBS for servicing , fitting , fixing or even cleaning must be quite costly . It would be interesting to hear from cyclists as to what needs to be budgeted for . I know some months must be more costly if tyres , chains , cassettes , or even chain rings are replaced . .
  10. For those who have there bikes inside and have a dedicated room for them , do you use you handle bars , saddle and top tube as clothes hangers for the sweaty kit you have just taken off and still will wear it the next day . I have a wash basket into which the dirty mtb bike kit gets dropped in for the wash . A big advantage to this method of drying out my kit is that the room has a particular nasty smell , dirty mtb bike , rubber tyres hanging in a cupboard ,, sweaty cycling shoes and what ever else stuck to me while riding . This keeps my wife out of it and never knows what's new , old or being replaced .

  12. Yesterday on my training ride i had to really brake hard on a very steep down hill . My front pads were due for change and i felt the vibration then the noise of metal on metal . I went to Cycle East to buy Shimano pads but no stock only later in the week . I had a worn pair of pads better than what was in the caliper . I replaced them but also decided to bleed the brakes , a bad move the short pipe from the syringe had a crack in it and i lost the fluid to quickly and did not have more to replace . I took my bike to Cycle East today to bleed the brakes . An hour later i was back and to my surprise they had replaced the pads with better used pads than i had put in , bleed the brakes all for R100 . Supporting a LBS is definitely worth doing because of these small favor's that come your way . Thanks Kelly and bike techy Thomas . .

  14. How about songs with weird titles and even more weird band names . This one won me many a beer when sitting with mates trying to out do one another with weird names . Sniff and Tears with Drivers Seat
  15. Had a good Feb training 26 of the 28 days with an average of 45 km per day . I did not watch my food intake that well and had a few too many slices of banana bread and chocolate cake ( my wife is diabetic so i eat most of it ) Our scale gave in ( 25 years old ) so i actually weighed myself on Thursday at the vet as we had to fetch one of our dogs . Im trying to do a 100 day challenge of riding every day . A friend of mine just completed his and did 5085km .
  16. A recognized brand has a Neutral PH (SABS 825 ). A cheap brand or back yard chemical company add salt to thicken it .
  17. I ride a full suspension and get a good 6000 km ( 6 months ) out of a good quality chain and about 10,000km on a cassette ( Shimano ) I dont mash gears and am careful about which chainring im on when i need to climb . Cleaning of chain is essential depending on terrain . I use a dry lube purely to avoid the black oil the occurs from wet lubing ..I also have the park tool and trust in its accurateness
  18. A bad fall 10 days a go , the shock of the price of replacing a Shimano shifter , the bad weather the last week and a new oven so my wife has been busy baking up a storm testing it . No No i mustn't use those as excuses for only losing half a kilogram . I have found every excuse in the mornings not to go out or when i did not to ride hard and get the excess calories burnt off . I think its called "motivation " which I'm surely lacking at the moment . I stopped off yesterday on my ride to chat to a runner who i have been greeting and chatting to for a year or more . She takes her dogs for a run some mornings and in June last year her dog ran into her and broke her leg .An op to put pins and plates in left her on crutches for about 2 months and then it was rehab time and starting slowly again . Just listening to her gave me the motivation to get my head in the game and do what i need to do . Ride for a purpose everyday by doing PB's on sections daily and shedding the calories that I've consumed the day before . I apologies for being long winded but i needed to tell myself the truth by admitting it .
  19. I have just had that experience with a fall i had last week . The over tightened shifters were wrecked to the extent that both levers were bent and would not operate the derailleur front and back . The bolt / nut holding the front brake onto the fork was so close to being stripped that the jolt as my bike hit the road snapped it lose . Stick to the suggested torque dont use the old mans method tighten just before it snaps and then give it a quarter turn back .
  20. You are welcome Campag retro equipment is scarce . i see in you avatar pic a RIH . I rode a red RIH in the 60/70's . Are you building up one ?

  24. Im doing well thanks Chris . I did my first off road ride on Friday since the fall . A couple of the bumpier sections were a bit eina on the joint but we still averaged 23.kph for the 60 km. . My wife just shock her head and even offered to patch me up . I think she gets it now as long as im on a bike im going to have scrapes and road rash . That's what comes from being together for 50 years .
