  1. For those curious know the size of my Pepper 9mm pistol here is a pic compared to a std computer mouse and my head light .
  2. I carry a 9mm pepper spray pistol in my right back pocket ( holds 6 blank 9mm cartridges ). When fired the sound is of a firearm so its frightening to the criminal as well as hopefully will scare them into running off . I had a Germán Shepard come out of a open gate a few weeks ago chasing me . It was on a slight down hill so had the advantage of some speed but it stayed trying to bite me . I carry it with one up , safety off but not cocked . In one move movement i took it out , while pulling the hammer back ( i have practiced this many times ) and fired a shot at the snarling demon who immediately yelped and ran onto the pavement . The owner was coming out his driveway in his car and had followed the dog . The confrontation with the owner was almost worse than with the dog as he thought i had shot and wounded his dog . When i had convinced and shown him that it was a pepper spray blank that the gun shoots he immediately asked where i had bought it and if one needs a license to own one . It saved me that day and a trip to the hospital for stiches and a tetanus shot .
  3. Just a heads up for those who ride slick tyres . I use a hard tail 29 for my daily training ride doing a urban stroll ( mixture of tar ,grass , gravel and pavements ) with slick tyres 29 x 1.40 . I used a 29 x 2.25 tube which would bunch up in spots and give a bumpy ride . I have now replaced those tubes with 700.x 40 tube . I was concerned that it would not be wide enough for a 1.40 tyre but it fits perfectly no bunching and pumps up to 4 bar seating the tyre bead .
  4. Thanks for reminding me of the Johnson Crane marathon on Sunday. Ive seen the markings on the route i do so will have to be extra careful and leave a bit earlier to avoid the fish and chips .
  5. Then I want to use my old rims as a training set for when Im on the road. Tire options are Maxxis Rambler and Schwalbe G-one Bite. Any experience with them? QUOTE Why go to the expense of Maxxis or Schwalbe for road use . I ride a hard tail on the road daily with CST slick tyres tubeless( R200 odd at CL ) . I have done close on 8000km on a pair and can hardly see the wear factor between front and back . They are a bitch to fit and get seated but once filled with sealant they roll beautifully . I often have to jump onto pavements or take avoidance action onto gravel and rocky sections and they are good for that . Don't do single or lose sandy roads you will then know why MTB's have knobble tyres .
  6. In the 70s to 90s we only had rollers and rode them more than often on rainy or cold days . A good rubber mat was essential to eliminate vibration or creeping . I remember replacing bearings at least 3 times in the life of my rollers because of vibration at certain speeds and position to one side or the other that would accentuate the vibration . The wear will be on the two rear rollers . Take them out and feel for play either horizontally or side to side on the shaft . Replacement is simple but take the bearing # off the side to buy new and buy the best brand . I am a SKF fan for all things bearing
  7. Batteries are available in different amperages and sizes from various suppliers. The matching connectors are your problem but can be sourced from Trysome https://www.trysome.co.za/products . With car and bike restoration i have come across many different types of connectors for the electrical system and have used them many times . Many times it was worth changing both male and female connectors if i could not get a exact match .
  8. The Silverback agency is now with CL and Daniel Amos is the correct person to work through . I had a problem with pivot bearings / bushes and he sorted it out .
  9. I have had that with a certain brand of socks as well . My problem was pulling the socks on too tight over my toes ( not leaving any space or play for your toes to wiggle naturally .Once i identified the sock brand and why it was happening i was good to go .
  10. I use a similar method of 60% of current price if condition is good and age is not a factor . This allows for negotiation by buyer .I have various interests that i apply it to and it works for me . Go to to your LBS and ask for a outright purchase price ( no trade in ) from them and you will get a figure that you can then adjust to the 50I60% mark .
  11. Thanks Diesel , i did not think of the heat factor from rim brakes . Ill also top up regularly .
  12. I already have a tube with sealant in and still punctured . I bought them on a special when i bought the liners . It did not help me on this occasion . I don't think there is enough sealant in those tubes . Im going to top it up with about another 25ml of Enduro my sealant of choice on my MTB .
  13. This morning i punctured my rear wheel for the first time since putting tyre liners in about 4 months ago . when fixing the puncture i noticed a distinct wear line on the tube were the tyre liner fits between the tyre and the tube . There was also a lot of tube rubber dust inside the tyre . Is this normal or is there something im doing wrong when inserting the liner . The tyres are 50% worn and the walls are fairly malleable as i can put the tyre on with my hands without using a tyre lever .
  14. With Gautengs rainy season starting again i i decided to invest in a set of mudguards for my daily Urban Sprawl Monson . I settled on a pair i found at Decathlon for R280 . I thought if they don't work as i would like i have not spent much and can pass them on to someone . They have brackets front and back and the mudguard can be unclipped in seconds if you don't need them on for a dry day ride . I have not ridden a bike with mudguards on since the age of 12 so it was weird not seeing the front wheel . Well it was a pleasure this morning not having water spray up my back , filling my shorts with water and sand and a lot less water on my legs and shoes . My opinion is yes on tar , pavements and a little off road . I think if you go totally off road into the fields the mud will really stick and render those mudguards useless .
  15. I was told by the farmers in the NC that first of all you don't turn it upside down , don't face its back end towards you while carrying it , ( it might pee on you and its a foul smell ).and take it across the road the way it was walking or facing because that's were it wants to go .
  16. My rides always take longer than expected because of my love for all animals . I remove animals that have been hit by cars from the road and as OP said to let them have dignity in death . I have chased dogs and cornered them so that helpers from the area can locate the owners or in some cases i phone the local SPCA and wait for them to collect the dogs . Cats and birds if found and caught are taken to the closest vets on my route . ( I know them all ) . Even when i was traveling in the Northern Cape on business i would do the same with animals i came across .
  17. I have found that a slight alignment left or right is the cause of knee problems . Check that alignment carefully before tightening the cleat . Some cleat makes have different knobbles ? were they fit against the sole and could easily slip into the wrong pattern holes created by the old cleats .
  18. Contact Desmond at Soekoe Bicycle Company https://soekoe.co.za/ . He builds bikes from scratch so knows the pitfalls of brazing on thin high tensile tubing .
  19. Im a SKF bearing fan ( mainly automotive ) . When i needed a full set of pivot bearings for my Silverback Sido i took the bearing # and went along to the main warehouse in Jet Park . They had both sizes in stock at roughly 30% less than the Enduro . When i told the counter salesman what the big bearing was for he was not sure if their bearing would stand up to the punishment a suspension takes . So i put the Enduro's bearings , new pivot bolts ( Stainleess Steel not aluminum ) throughout and a complete set of nylon bushes . The lesson here is when purchasing none specific bearings is to check what load capacity and rotation factor is . The old saying "Goed koop is duur koop " comes to mind .
  20. Always thankful when a good Samaritan turns up but dont forget to pay it forward .
  21. Right (driveside) pedals are always standard-threaded. This means they tighten by turning the spindle clockwise and loosen by turning anti-clockwise. In other words, right to tighten, left to loosen.
  22. I use only Shimano XT pedals on 3 different bikes . All sets were bought as used from Bike Hub members . When i got them i immediately serviced them by loosening all the tension screw /allen key bolts and washing all the dirt out . I then cleaned the shafts and replaced new water proof grease . Today 60,000 km later i have not had a days trouble . I have replaced cleats on the same pair of Capestorm shoes only 3 times because the left foot which i unclip when approaching mud , water , rough uneven terrain and stop and traffic lights wears out more and gets a slight squeak and more sideways movement on it . I find the Marvel cleats are more durable than the Shimano . Upper movement on the pedals or cleats is NIL .
  23. Don't forget to insure your bike computer , saddle bag with content , and your kit you wear . When you fall or crash and those items are lost or broken you only then realize the replacement cost . I had a mishap with a dog running into my bike , i fell and ripped my kit , and my bike was not repairable so was replaced at full value and so was my kit including shoes .
  24. There are a lot of cyclists who are not tech savvy or for that mater keen on washing down a bike after a good dusty , muddy or even just a wet ride on a road bike . I know some LBS offer this at a slightly higher price and i see a lot of bikes going in on a Monday for this . Way back in the 60's my mate and i started bicycle repairs for the area we lived in . We made enough money weekly to pay for movies , cooldrinks and the odd packet of fish and chips and also kept me in tubbies ( tubular tyres ) and any other spare i needed for my RIH racing bike . So i would say if you have a fair amount of cyclist around you and your work ethic is good go for . Its easier to market yourself as a business nowadays than it was back then . Now im really giving away my age .
