  1. I have had the same good service from Jared in the work shop . I needed a flat blade with the threaded end on the hub ( Shimano WH R550 )No shops had stock and i also have about 6 X LBS around me and most of them quoted 14 day delivery at R35 per spoke . Jared / Cullen took the sample and came back with 4 ( not Flat but round and correct length spokes ) . When i enquired as to price ( having been told R35 )i was a bit worried . No sir i was told these are on the house with complements of CL .
  2. Just for those who want to reset their Garmin ( Stored rides / Trip counter .)I did this after my morning ride and all info on my phone and Garmin Connect stayed intact . HenryS you were spot on . .My mileage for the year ,
  3. I use my Garmin daily to record my rides . I have never reset it over the last 3 years so it has a lot of data on it . I am going to reset it on the 1st Jan 22. My concern is that i will lose my Garmin Connect Data on my phone as well or am i safe in thinking that it is on a different piece of equipment and wont be affected . I preferred the days of chalk and a slate board , that if you rubbed it off you knew it was gone . I think by saying that im showing my age . 😛
  4. If you touring NZ make contact with Tomas https://www.facebook.com/tomasworldcycle . He is currently in NZ but has thousands of kilometers of touring experience and im sure will give the right advice .
  5. I find a good rule of thumb on used parts is to price them at between 60 and 75% of new like wise items . the better the condition and lower usage of them will allow you a higher price . Remember one rule when dealing second hand goods " Willing seller ,willing buyer " I have dealt in used and barely used motor spares for a long time and use this rule . Don't be bullied just because item has a scratch or small blemish .
  6. I ride Maxxis on my dual and hardly ever have to inflate . ( once a month i check pressure ) On a set of wheels i have Conti Comfort Slicks on i was constantly inflating so ended up putting tubes in as i only ride them on the road .Im not a fan of the Conti brand as i had a run in with the manufacturer many years ago with a set of tyres on my BMW and have never used Conti on any of my vehicles again .
  7. I think gear /kit is relevant to each one individually . I have shorts and jerseys from the 80's that are still perfect but outdated because of material and styles used ( I still use them ) . Three years ago i imported some jerseys from China (landed cost R200 ) . Shorts i bought 2 pairs from Decathlon ( R190 ) . and still use them today . I recently bought a rain jacket with pockets (R600 ) and have had a view rides in our latest ( Gauteng down pours ) and stayed dry as bone except for my legs Im not a weekend slogger but ride every day road or mtb doing 1200 km plus per month so the kit gets well used and washed often .
  8. Have a a look at Decathlons range https://www.decathlon.co.za/mountain-bikes/309736-39377-275quote-e-st-100-electric-mountain-bike-blue.html#/demodelcolor-8560739/demodelsize-1045xl_185_200cm?queryID=c26977f8ee8416e8b2ea36559ad89806&objectID=2899450. At least get some sort of back up .
  9. Try TVS in Kempton Park . Speak to Thomas 0825453717 . They carry a lot of hardly used spares .
  10. Many components are compatible with one another but it begs the question as to why they are mixed and matched . For reasons not known to the buyer or a buyer not being to clued up about bikes i as a newbie would steer clear of cross dressing . Ford V 8s fit into Chev Impalla engine compartments but among the V8 purists its a no no .
  11. One word of advice when buying used bikes is to make sure the group set that's on it is all the same brand and model . It just makes it easier to google the brand and model to check the performance and spec . Cross dressing as i call it comes from previous owners not really knowing their components when replacing or its a bike built up out of older WELL used components .
  12. Glad you got sorted but living in Edenvale you missed getting hold of Desmond Soekoe https://soekoe.co.za/ in Fishers Hill just up the road . He builds E Bikes and Motorised Bikes from scratch . A mate of mine bought components from him and built his own E Bike
  13. Thank you for the article would not mind to get a copy of Basil Cohen’s autobiography . His brother Ivan is on the HUB if im not mistaken , ask through him or Ron Thompson will know the publishers
  14. Yes i think they were powder coated . That was my first racing bike in 1965 . A red DHC Super with Simplex derailleurs and Weinman center pull brakes .The paint never got scratched only chipped and you could then see the bare metal . Here is a good story to go with the DHC name in cycling and of coarse Basil Cohen . https://www.theheritageportal.co.za/article/racing-shadows-mine-dumps-black-african-cycle-sport-south-africas-gold-mines-apartheid-era
  15. I rode the Hornet and found it to have very soft side walls . ( Punctured easy with hard twigs and lose stone ) Mileage was half of what i get out of a Maxxis tyre . Grip in mud and soft sand is good , i would say equal to Maxxis but i like mileage out of my tyres .
  16. I dont know were you situated but most areas have a corner shoe maker looking for work that they desperately need . I have a many crashes and ended up with scuffs , torn Velcro straps and even a hole in the side of one shoe . For anything from R20 to R100 i had them repaired . Gloves have also been repaired by him . Saves a fortune .
  17. Agreed on those aspects . Keep it simple . One thing i find works wonders for testing oneself is to map out a short 2.5 to 5 km circuit close to home . On completion of a 40 or more ride then test your time riding as hard as you can on that circuit . Keep a log of those times and if you are gaining fitness , losing weight then the times will come down and you should feel the benefit . My policy has always been RIDE ,RIDE AND RIDE SOME MORE .
  18. Im keeping an eye on this thread to see how it develops .Im keen on a 160 km plus ride on tar or gravel . My longest ride since starting to ride again is 110 km on road at a 28kph average so if you are faster than that ill give it a miss .
  19. Cant help with model or type of tubing used but its in good condition . It might have had a respray in its life time . Love those old retro bikes .
  20. I have a pair of 105 10 spd shifter hoods (95% still good ) that you are welcome to have .They are the same shape .
  21. Bicycle Line are agents https://www.bicycleline.co.za/
  22. No thanks at that price . I have a aluminum one that i kept in my car , the water tasted metally after a few hours and it rattled like hell on the bike .
