  1. i.e. only the seller and buyer should rate one another, no one else no matter their opinion on it. Agree completely with that rule . Rating some on hearsay is like saying " i know a guy who bought from someone in the Cape, i think, and he was not happy with the item ."
  2. I ride a full suspension and get a good 6000 km ( 6 months ) out of a good quality chain and about 10,000km on a cassette ( Shimano ) I dont mash gears and am careful about which chainring im on when i need to climb . Cleaning of chain is essential depending on terrain . I use a dry lube purely to avoid the black oil the occurs from wet lubing ..I also have the park tool and trust in its accurateness
  3. A bad fall 10 days a go , the shock of the price of replacing a Shimano shifter , the bad weather the last week and a new oven so my wife has been busy baking up a storm testing it . No No i mustn't use those as excuses for only losing half a kilogram . I have found every excuse in the mornings not to go out or when i did not to ride hard and get the excess calories burnt off . I think its called "motivation " which I'm surely lacking at the moment . I stopped off yesterday on my ride to chat to a runner who i have been greeting and chatting to for a year or more . She takes her dogs for a run some mornings and in June last year her dog ran into her and broke her leg .An op to put pins and plates in left her on crutches for about 2 months and then it was rehab time and starting slowly again . Just listening to her gave me the motivation to get my head in the game and do what i need to do . Ride for a purpose everyday by doing PB's on sections daily and shedding the calories that I've consumed the day before . I apologies for being long winded but i needed to tell myself the truth by admitting it .
  4. I have just had that experience with a fall i had last week . The over tightened shifters were wrecked to the extent that both levers were bent and would not operate the derailleur front and back . The bolt / nut holding the front brake onto the fork was so close to being stripped that the jolt as my bike hit the road snapped it lose . Stick to the suggested torque dont use the old mans method tighten just before it snaps and then give it a quarter turn back .
  5. You are welcome Campag retro equipment is scarce . i see in you avatar pic a RIH . I rode a red RIH in the 60/70's . Are you building up one ?

  8. Im doing well thanks Chris . I did my first off road ride on Friday since the fall . A couple of the bumpier sections were a bit eina on the joint but we still averaged 23.kph for the 60 km. . My wife just shock her head and even offered to patch me up . I think she gets it now as long as im on a bike im going to have scrapes and road rash . That's what comes from being together for 50 years .
  9. The Hub came to my help again . I wanted a set of shifters and thanks to' sirmoun10goat " all the way in Canada who put me onto "Trailman " in Capetown selling a Dura ace Group set . i ended up grading my complete group set to a Dura Ace for the same price as 2 shifters . Thanks guys this old toppie appreciates it .
  10. Hi Reuben , I have one for you but i am in Boksburg . Send me your no and we can make a plan to meet half way . Regards Rudy 0836280487
  11. I crashed on Saturday on a right hand bend . I went a bit wide so as to miss a car that was coming up to the stop street i was turning into and slipped on the lose stone on the edge of the road .I went down at about 30kph and ended up with a bit of road rash on my elbow , knee and hip . On checking my bike the right hand brake / gear shifter was badly damaged and did not work shifting gears or even braking . I bought this bike a Raliegh RC 7000 with full Shimano Ulterga group set for R4000 Today i did some enquiries to replace it and was shocked at the price of R3900 for both shifters or R2500 for the rear only . Is there someone out there that had a similar crash but broken the left shifter and has a right 10 speed shifter for sale or even as a donation to a good cause ( im a pensioner ). I dont compete in races but do ride with certain bike shop groups so as to maintain my level of fitness and competitiveness .

  13. Yesterday i punctured on my road bike along Atlas rd. . I sorted it out and was on my way in less than 10min. .This morning i went out on the same route and punctured again on the opposite end of Atlas rd . I had forgotten to replace my punctured tube with a new one so was stranded . I was walking to a safe spot along the road to phone my son to come collect me . A bunch of CL cyclists came past and asked if i was ok , answering " no i need a tube " .Without hesitation i had an offer from 2 or 3 guys offering me a tube which i gladly accepted . The guys name is Gavin from Edenvale he said " A big thank you to and and your bunch for the offers . I asked how i could return it and the answer was " dont sweat " While i was then changing the tube on a safe little island at the intersection another cyclist just pulled up onto the island and started helping . Thank you Siya ( not Kholise ) he was about have his size . Your assistance is appreciated. We then carried on down Atlas rd and he told me he was new to cycling and still learning from the older guys . He was riding much to big a gear for the flat road we were on and i advised him to gear back one or two gears so as to spin a bit more , which he then did and found the going a lot easier . This is the first time i have needed help on the road and it came quickly without questions asked . I will pay forward your generosity and assistance from these two gentlemen .
  14. Silverback produce typical German quality . I ride a Sido 2 and have done more than 30,000 km since new . We ride fairly rough terrain , a lot water and mud crossings during summer and have had no frame component failure .My BB now needs replacing but that's expected after the km's ive done . .
  15. My Silverback Sido 2 ( 30,0000 km +_ ) has a press in BB which has now got a bit of play on the cranks . I want to replace it with Press Fit to BSA Adaptor kit . . Currently stock is not available from agents . . I want to buy local so as not to have a hassle with the wrong kit being supplied through a on line store . Some LBS ask to bring the bike in for assessment because they are not sure what size it is . As far as understand there is only one size . Ill do my own fitting so only need the kit to be bought . Am i wrong about one size fits all and which brand is best .
  16. Well here it goes again , food watching , quantity watching , sweet stuff watching oh hell you just have to aware of what you put in your mouth On my daily rides (45km) i burn about 1400 calories but at this stage have no idea what my intake is .My goal of 82,5 kg is attainable as 2018 i achieved it and was best loser for that year , So here goes fellow Hubers and good luck .
  17. Im well on my way to my fitness before my fall and op .Im comfortable at 45 to 60 km per day and longer rides on weekends . I have done close on 2000km since resuming training . My eating habits have unfortunately let me down during the festive season so im about 6 kg over my lowest in the beginning of the year of 82 kg .. Im going to join up on the 2021 Weight Challenge on The Hub as a motivator and record keeper of my weight . To anybody who has hip joint problems and is skeptical about the replacement of the joint , don't be . I rode with someone a few weeks ago who had it done 5 years ago and he coined it " the forgotten joint " and i must agree . . Two months of inconvenience and when you put your positive cap on you will be on your bike the next week . Thank you for the encouragement and advice during my rehab and finally getting back on the bike and training with concerned riders helping me out on rides . This thread is now closed and ill see some of you guys on the black stuff or sandy roads next year .
  18. Training is on track and im doing 45km a day . This weekend i went out with the BL group and we did the Emperors route ( Plus minus ) route . We topped out at 100 km at 3hr 16min so i was very happy with my progress . I have no hip or leg pain but have lost strength which is what i was told by the physio and needs to be built up slowly . My goal before my fall to do a sub 3hr 100km ride before year end but i dont think ill reach that goal so its set for end of Jan 2021 .
  19. Im going to join in again next year for motivation . After lock down was relieved to the 5 km radius i did a lot of road training on my MTB ( wore out a Maxxis ) rear tyre . I then bought a road bike and could realy feel the strength i had built using the MTB . Saturday 12/09/20 ii did a ride with the Bicycle Line group and i did a 100km in 3hr 14m . I was well on my way to a sub 3hr 100km in a few weeks time . Tuesday 15/09/20 i had a fall and fractured my left hip . Wednesday i had a hip joint replacement which kept me off my bike for 9 weeks in which time i gained 7 kg . I did a 100 ride again on Saturday with the same group and did a 100km in 3hr 16 min ,so i am back on track but need to lose the weight . Christmas time with its lunches , dinners , cakes , ice-cream., sweets and anything lekker is not a time to watch weight . So 2021 Bike Hub Weight Challenge is on .
  20. Since my last post i have been riding intermittently . If it was windy or cold or even looked like rain i made an excuse to myself to not go out . This week though has been different and i started doing my hilly circuit (500m Plus in 45km ) I started on my MTB as i wanted the comfort of suspension but then soon realized that i was being a sissy by climbing in small gears that a MTB has . So today i went out on the road bike and climbed the most difficult one and i had to get out the saddle the last 100m or so . (39 X 25 ) so i was fully tested and i had no pain . Pro Cycles on the East Rand has a 40/40 day challenge . Cycle every day for a minimum of 5 km per day . Unfortunately im joining with 20 days to go but ill give it a good go . My fitness is good but im still weary about pushing hard every day like i was doing . So ill alternate daily one day push the next relax but do the same distance .
  21. Have a look at some of these https://www.google.com/search?q=helicoil+thread+repair+kit&oq=helicoil+&aqs=chrome.4.69i57j0l6j0i457.12749j0j15&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
  22. Covid forced me into retirement ( my son didn't want me in contact with our customers who come into our offices ) .As soon as we were allowed to train (5 km radius ) i started pushing hard . I was eventually up to 1200 km a month .My wife and i were really sticking to the restrictions put in place and felt very isolated but got on with life (lots of DIY ). My wife ended up with a pain in her spine which turned out to be a cyst on her spine and it had to be surgically removed ( hospital not a good place be be in during Covid ). I was doing all my training on tar on my MTB and wore out a rear tyre , so i managed to get a road bike to ride . I enjoyed that so much and was able to get my fitness up to a level that i rode 100km in 3 hrs 14 min .with the Bicycle Line Saturday group . Next goal was a sub 3 hr but it was not to be . On the Tuesday i had a fall on same bad road and fractured my hip . The orthopedic surgeon told me a hip replacement was necessary .( now i was in hospital during Covid ) Once out my rehabilitation started and at week 6 i was allowed to spin and at week 9 was on my bike and getting some slow rides in . Im now fully mobile and getting back to the level of fitness i had before my fall . Bring on 2021 please this year has been rough on my family .
