    Disk brakes

one of the major reasons is that you'd have to have stronger forks with lugs on to support the callipers. Another reason is that sort of stopping power isn't really necessary in road races. Although it would solve some of the hassles with carbon-specific brake pads etc.
  2. Yep, the reporting might not be perfect, but jeez it wasn't that bad, even the story about the spruit being a motorcross track (I have seen motorbikes on the spruit). And let's face it, most of us are not queuing up for a job at the local knock and drop. Now if we were to look for faults in a better-paid industry, financial services, for example....
  3. Reading the story I got the impression that it was more the family that wanted to sue than the victim. Perhaps once the shock wears off they will see the error of their ways.
  4. Yep Alex is doing a great job with his shop. It's really well stocked and the service is always professional and friendly. It's also open 7 days a week! What's incredible is that Alex is there virtually every day and yet he still somehow finds time to train and race. He told me he was "feeling comfortable" when the elite guys rode a gutter at Randfontein Watch out for him at the Sun City MTB with his bling Cyclo Cross bike. Apparently it's got Easton carbon wheels with CX tubbies on!
  5. Wasn't there a hubber on a Cervelo whose fork failed in the A category at the Ride for Sight or something like that?
  6. The article doesn't say he's threatening to sue, unless i'm missing something?
  7. It is true that if you fell off that thing, your chances of hurting yourself are quite high. It is quite a drop and there are sharp rocks below. A friend of mine's mom got a nasty gash in her arm trying to ride the thing (she has no plans to sue the builder that i'm aware of). Whereas if you fall off another obstacle, you might just get a bruise or something. Still, the bottom line is: if you attempt the thing and you crash it's your own stupid fault, especially if there is a sign.
  8. This looks like the new one to me, Mampara
  9. ? At Dunkeld cycle yesterday they guy said the SPez tyres are not very tough. Thet Fast Track does look like it can do the business. And they asked R460 for it. ? ? ? Does this mean you've gone tubeless, mampara?
  10. CWC sent out an e-mail this morning. They have Conti tubeless tyres for R300. I find it very difficult to justify spending more than that on a MTB tyre. I raised the big difference in costs between normal and tubeless tyres in another post, but nobody was able to come up with a good reason why the tubeless variety is so much more expensive. Anyway guys like Dirt Rider and Johan Bornman say it's fine to ride non-tubeless tyres as tubeless.
  11. How about a prize for the person who can identify the most "unofficial" brands sported by DG in Beijing
  12. My guess would be a Scott Plasma? The overwhelming message it sends is that the stock standard Raleigh stuff is fine if you want to dominate local races, but if you want to race at the Olympics, you need Lightweight Wheels, KCNC and some mystery TT frame ala Lance in the 99 TdF
  13. Willehond, exact same thing happened to my Keos, also from CWC. I also got a new pair after I returned them.
  14. You just got to do a ghetto conversion now
  15. The real purpose of this thread was not to pour scorn on the unfortunate roadie. You see Mampara, a former roadie himself, was merely making sure that his status as a mountainbiker is not in dispute. Mampara is such a mountainbiker that he refuses to ride naked carbon, drinks Windhoek Lager on training rides, and can spot a roadie by his footwear. What a man!
  16. ? I think he does have one. It evens has a real groupset on. ? ? Yep, and it's even made out of a real material, too
  17. Not bad at all. The only thing I'd consider changing is the frame and fork Perhaps you can get a nice Scott one day
  18. I agree. Cyclingnews has thrown its hat in the PPA/Winningtime ring and is thus doomed to be eclipsed by the far superior Cycle Lab/Champion Chip/non-PPA consortium.
  19. ? I don't see any problem with that but ....................................... no self respecting mountain biker would ever ride a bike with Schraeder valves' date=' nearly as bad as bar ends on riser bars man [/quote'] Clearly IanJ and I have no self respect Would be interested to hear JB's view on whether widening presta rim holes to fit Schraeder is a sensible thing to do.
  20. Yes, that is helpful, but the ideal calendar would include MTB races and also wallet-friendly events such as Benoni World Champs and Rooiwal.
  21. Am I the only person finding it increasingly difficult to plan my upcoming races? It seems that Cycle Lab and Cyclingnews are now in competition over race entries. As a result, neither site's calendar carries the other's races. I find this extremely frustrating. What would be ideal is an online race calendar that has no vested interests and would host all races regardless of their affiliation. The Hub strikes me as a good place to host such a calendar. Admin, what do you say? More primitively, I could start a thread such as "Gauteng races in Aug and Sept" and then keep editing the post as details of races come rolling in? Good idea?
  22. There's a lot to be said for this option, especially if you're running tubeless and can go lower pressure.

Mampara, no need to be cruel about my terrible affliction. An addiction to poncey carbon fibre is no joking matter
