  1. I don't know the whole story, just some rumors. But the stories I've heard range from the farmer wants to use the land, to the club hasn't paid the farmer per some or other agreement in a long time and he's now closed off access.
  2. I've volunteered a few times with events like Trek Women's Triathlon and Danksin Women's Triathlon, where it's requested that seasoned swimmers assist newbies in swimming. Essentially you swim with a person that is aprehensive to swim by themselves and talk them through it, noodles are available if the person so desires, and I can drag them across if they get tired. But I have yet to come across any of those athletes that have requested my assistance in towing them across. I have more respect for those women that are **** scared to swim but still do it, even though it takes them 45min to swim 600m, than some one that's a decent swimmer complaining about whether wetsuits can be used. Again, if you really want to get something done, YOU will find a way to make it happen. Stop making excuses and HTFU! EDIT: before any offense is taken, I'm not talking about you Garf, I'm talking about people in general.
  3. A triathlon consists of swimming, biking, and running, does it not? So any new comer to the sport is aware that they would have to swim, if not then there is something seriously wrong somewhere. If you are not comfortable with open water swimming, get some people together and go find a lake or dam to swim in. If you can't find anyone that wants to swim with you, don't go alone, but have someone on shore to watch you and stick to the shore line. Don't just look at triathlon clubs, look at swimming clubs as well in your area to get an idea of where and when people swim. If you are scared of the crowds, start in the back. I'm a firm believer that if you really want to do something, you'll find a way to do it. And I'm most certainly not trying to chase people away, I'm all for helping people out, I'm more than happy to share my 20+ years of swimming with anyone that wants to hear it. Cause like you said the more people exposed to the sport, the more events.
  4. The only way to get comfortable and better at open water swimming is to incorporate it in to your training. If you rely on your wetsuit to "survive" in the swimming portion of the tri, then you should rather look at duathlons.
  5. We need to be careful, there's a few of them lurking around here!
  6. +1 I also had someone ask to resubmit PDF's because they couldn't make out anything when they printed. Turns out they were printing A0 to A3 trying to take quantities.
  7. I get the same problem when going to their calendar on my computer, but if I access it via my crackberry I see the Cape Cobra, Tour de PPA, and a few others. Tried cleaning out my browser history and cookies and still same problem! EDIT: Here's the links to those rides http://www.pedalpower.org.za/event/olympic-cycles-pres-les-foord-asset-journey-4-sight-n-service/ http://www.pedalpower.org.za/event/tour-de-ppa/ http://www.pedalpower.org.za/event/cycle-lab-cape-cobra-challenge-2/
  8. The one company I worked for handed out a holiday bonus in 2008 - a nice 10% reduction in salary, while the bosses all got raises. This was after about 10 months of people getting laid off, overtime pay being cut, then comp time eliminated, no golf outing (golf outing was cancelled a week before it was to happen), no holiday party. Needless to say, the decent workers that were still left didn't stick around for much longer after that!
  9. I think they may need to change more than just a wheel!!!
  10. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ew9cEATPzDE
  11. Ouch, I feel your pain! Waaayyy... back when I got nailed by a kamikaze bee on my lip while riding, I now have a small scar there.
  12. It's Cyber Monday, so there'll be plenty of online deals if you look for them!
  13. I'm going to be selling my 2007 Orbea Ora TT full Dura Ace at the end of the year when I bring it back from the States... just in time for 70.3 and IM Sorry for the hi-jack
  14. Now this is a cool dog! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=air67MVB9YI
  15. Some threads you just can't unread!!!
  16. After a two year loan to the United States, Michelangelo's David is being returned to Italy... And a word of thanks to the proud sponsors that made his visit possible – McDonalds, Starbucks, & Burger King.
  17. They have an event this Saturday as well - The Winelands Mile Can you send me info on the Nov 26 event? But I definitely agree that this may be a good location to train in if you get permission!
  18. Nice summary!!! And in order to avoid any collisions, using a perception reaction time of 2.5s (AASHTO standard). If a motorist is travelling at 80km/h (22.22m/s), they will have travelled 55.55m. And if a cyclist is travelling at 25km/h (6.94m/s), they would have travelled 17.35m. Assuming that the motorist first sees the cyclist 100m away, and they are travelling in the same direction, there would still be 61.8m left to either move over, brake, or continue on the same path. If the cyclist was heading towards the motorist, then that reduces the distance to only 27.1m - less than half of what it was previously.
  19. Wow! That's crazy!!! Glad you okay though!
  20. I also got inked for my finger prints - they just scan them in and load them up in to their data base.
  21. Foam roller - hurts like a biatch, but does the trick.
  22. +1 Especially for Expat South Africans that left before they had their first ID issued, i.e. no finger prints in the database. So essentially I didn't exist for about 3 months when I first came back here.
  23. I don't know about the whole lower loop, but I know that a while back they shortened it because of lambing season. Apparently the cyclists scared the sheep and a lot of lambs were abandoned by the ewes and died.
