  1. Cape Towns suburbs are fast becoming a bike destination in its own right. The opening of new trails on Table Mountain have created riding opportunities for residents and visitors from Camps Bay to Tokai. This is a POV Video of one of my favourite sections of trail in the Southern Suburbs. Its starts with a fast jeep track descent that turns into a piece of fun single track with a few choice obstacles to keep the rider on his or her toes. Its a multi use trail so a bell and a finger on both brakes are needed at all times...
  2. Finally - a sensible hard tail. Can't find the price on the website though...
  3. There is nothing wrong with demonstrating but in SA the tendency is to break things, not build them up. There is also a palpable lack of capacity to see the connections between actions and future incidents or events. Causation in other words. Its not as if the residents of the township have no other avenues of communication or protest. Some of them derive an income from the cycle tour no doubt. The amount of money spent in CT over the week leading up to the tour is huge. Sure some of it lands up in the fat cat (Hotshots :-) ) pockets, but there are also more jobs, because of it. Let's also not ignore the money charities receive and use to uplift the poor or needy. I remember years ago, just pre -994 when a township resident received some foreign funding to open a creche or school. Her neighbours burned the place down apparently because she had dared to rise above them. That memory has stuck with me for twenty years and I am always reminded of it when I read about shops being looted and people murdered because they were different or successful or whatever.
  4. I don't disagree with you or the organizers decision to divert. Its just that with the rise in protests we see annually, there is an element of predictability. The City organizers and police all work together on a plan for the event. The plan needs to take this kind of thing into account or we may never see another CTCT on the full route. That and the ease with which fires are started and also disrupt proceedings.
  5. At the height of the unrest there a year or two back there was a mobile disaster management camp set up 500m away. Perhaps some police patrols or a mobile station set up close by would have deterred the protesters. Its a big event, many protests in the past = predictable, at least to some extent, in my book.
  6. We had a peleton of 30 or so friends and family riding a remembrance ride for a recently deceased family member. It was a big deal especially for those close to him so the cancellation was a bitter pill. We will be back next year however, probably with a fund raiser for Red Cross Children's where he worked some of the time. The protests were always on the cards. There have been many in the past. There are issues with policing and vigilantism as well as all the other problems the inhabitants face. As for the wind - they need an alternate start venue/chute for windy days. Poor planning from some very experienced organizers. Felt sorry for all the upcountry riders I saw returning empty handed today, bikes barely ridden. Sorry guys!
  7. True, but compared to plenty of other brands eg Santa Cruz and Spaz, its actually in the ballpark when you look at all that carbon and quality suspension.
  8. Interesting observations. I wonder how many non ebike accidents there are in places like Holland for instance? At Tokai on Saturday two cyclists collided on the access jeep track. Both were travelling down the hill, the one at plonker pace and the other somewhat faster by all accounts. The plonker simply turned right into the path of the other cyclists as he was passing. Sounds like at least one of them made a trip to the ER afterwards.
  9. And if you don't have a handicap, other than a very heavy wallet to carry around?
  10. I agree, but when that assistance gets beyond a certain point ie over 25kph?
  11. Hairy you jest - there aren't any jumps there...
  12. No doubt those were not MTB's but commuter bikes which are probably in huge demand in Holland. I have had misgivings about eMTB's but have got past most of them. As a pedal assist bike I have very little problem with them. Hopped up and with a throttle I do. The question is at what point do they become a motor bike and therefore banned from MTB trails and wilderness areas? There has to be a point at which this occurs. I am sure they are fun in their own way and will get better and better over time, but for me they are anti the whole point of cycling - its self powered. Most of these new bikes are trail bikes - it makes sense because they are heavier and that kind of falls into the trail bike arena with bigger forks and so on. Problem for me is that while you may be able to earn your ascents easier, descending is never going to be as good as on a sorted trail bike that weighs nearly 10kg less.
  13. Looks like a tough track. On the granite, granite has more grip than sand stone - ask any rock climber. There is lots of it on Lions Head and the trails there are pretty tech but made easier because the rock is granite and therefore grippy as anything. Was it covered in dust?
  14. That's the first time I have seen suspension described as a vibration damper for the rider to reduce fatigue. I suppose it is but I have always seen it in terms of traction and control over rough ground and the ability to tackle rougher and more obstacle ridden lines at higher speeds. I have to wonder if instead of viewing it as a vibration damper and seeing it as a tool to improve dh handling would not give XCO riders another avenue to make up some seconds in a race. Coupled with a dropper post that could allow a few extra pedal strokes on the roughest descents, and improved bike control, a winning margin of a few seconds a lap could be gained...
  15. I'll pop in and check when I have a spare few minutes
  16. I see them online - standard size is 5/16" x 3/4" long - maybe a tad big for MTB tyres?
  17. I see mushroom plugs differ to the usual sticky strip repair thing I used. I'd also like to know where to get them please. Look like a good idea for a longer term repair when you get the bike home...
