  1. Hahaha, I bought a decent flat in the southern burbs for R117k around the same time...
  2. True, good points re cost of shock servicing - my wifes RP2 and Sid cost around R2k including a new Propedal knoppie. Is it possible to get a regular shop to service the things or does it have to be Spaz?
  3. Such hate at Momsen?? I like the look of the Vipa and spec seems okay. Price is of course ridiculous, but then the competition mentioned is the same. How much is a Stage or Camber or Epic?
  4. For sure. If you look at the price, it is steep but you could probably have one of these custom beauties for less than an Sworks/Intense/SC. Proper exclusivity too.
  5. That is a wicked bike - wish they would put a proper review up...
  6. Nice review, good and bad mentioned. Silly money for a bike. The special shocks and servicing costs on top of the astronomical asking price (the same goes for the other bikes mentioned in comments) make it too expensive for 90% of the cycling population. How about reviews of the cheapest Epic (no doubt still around 50-60k), Anthem, Scalpel and Scott? My guess is that aside form a weight penalty there isn't much difference.
  7. It is in fact part of the new MTB routes and will be opened in due course. As far as I remember, it has not been opened because some work needed to be done on the trail. It will have some tricky bits but is relatively flat and will be an out and back route if I recall.
  8. I saw a report that Emily is not coming unless Zuma and his cohorts are gone by then...
  9. We did a long distance explore 10 days ago and found some of the good stuff. This article and comments came a week or so too late :-). Going to have to go back this weekend!! The descent and traverse form the Kramat on Signal Hill to Kloof Road is super fun but more trail bike friendly than most of the other recently opened trails. It even has boardwalk and drops and a very tech bit of stair descending onto the tar that I gave up on riding. We were there on a Saturday morning around 830am and it was busy - walkers, runners and dogs. The entrance to the proper Glen single track eluded us thanks to official signage placed around 20m before the actual entrance which took us down dozens of stairs. Quite fun in its own way but nothing like the Glen proper, looks like. Not sure why there is even a sign there at all. The granite rock is extremely grippy making some of the tech rock gardens a bit easier I thought but as they say, if you come off on that stuff its going to remove some meat... Now if only we had a bunch more such tracks around that part of the peninsula.
  10. Agree, a writeup on the provincials would also be good. There was nothing here on the Paarl round a week ago.
  11. Good point. I watch fro free on RB TV, so cheap is properly cheap! No DoosTV in my house.
  12. Yourself included I assume? I think R100 is still reasonable but to put it in perspective. Thats a 80km round trip by car and if the whole family goes - maybe R300 for tickets - I assume a 6 year old might be free, failing which its R400. Plus food and drinks - could be close to R750 by the time you are done.
  13. Good news on the XCO front! Hope they dont make it pricey to spectate - if so I'll save the hassle and watch on TV. I think Helderberg would require a serious amount of work to turn it into the kind of DH track the UCI would approve. It definitley has the elevation. The biggest problem there will be access for the riders. As it stands its a torturous bakkie shuttle that takes several minutes. That said, not every venue has Fort William gnar - La Bresse is back in this year and its apparently rather short.
  14. See my review back a page on this thread. It is great but the Snake casing is too weak for my kind of riding out back. I destroyed a nearly new tyre. I am also going to try a SG casing next.

  16. If knee pads tear after a single crash they are probably not built tough enough. I have the older 661 Kyle Strait pads. They are now over 3 years old and the only part that is failing is the weaker elasticized side areas which sometimes catch on the frame and such like. The fronts of teh pad is covered with kevlar or something similar and simply does not tear. (I have tested them quite a few times in case you were wondering) Chose 1 - light weight and breathable vs tough and durable protection
  17. I guess 26" trail bikes are in short supply so the demand is low - enduro only started taking off in SA once the manufacturers had already decided to ditch 26. its a different story overseas where there were far more trail/enduro bikes around while 26 was still king. The interesting thing is that Maxxis happily churn out some of their newer tyres in 26" still. I would like to see Minion SS and High Roller/ DHF/DHR more freely available.
  18. My wife did a session with Joanna and came away a far more confident rider. She passed on some of the tips she learned to me. Win/win!
  19. Also true - I wouldn't do it with most other tyres, but the DHR was almost too grippy when new - now its a bit more fun and still grippy enough in the corners. I am talking rear tyre by the way - front is a totally different ball game.
  20. I stuck my w@nked out minion dhr2 back on my bike after the RR fail. I can feel the worn side knobs but still quite enough grip when needed - just have to be more careful with late braking and off camber sections. I am going for a record to see how many more KM I can put on it before catastrophic failure.
  21. Most frames can handle a longer fork no problem - 20mm of extra travel is unlikely to break the frame. If its does it was badly made in the first place. I have seen Spaz enduro's with Boxxer double crown forks on them. Its a lovely bike but I missed the price - no doubt a ridiculous R95k or something... a far cry from a 26" Anthem and hardly 10x better or more fun to ride. My 6 year old 26er has 412mm chainstays without even trying by the way :-)
