  1. My comments are semi-tongue in cheek. At the time of my wonky wheel Argus i wondered how much quicker I could have been on an Ali Cannondale with STI shifters - and decent wheels... However, I question the pricing of this beast - it makes the Swift look like a bargain!
  2. Cool, will look out for you on the rostrum after the Argus :-) Then again by then the placebo effect will have worn off...
  3. My theory on road bikes is that like Lance said - its not about the bike. Once you have narrow tyres, reasonable weight and good geo, you can hang with the fancy bikes. I cracked a sub 3 Argus years ago on a hi tensile steel frame bike with downtube shifters and a very wonky rear wheel by the time I got to the end. In fact I nearly didn't reach the finish I reckon. I have a 125kg relative who insists on riding the lightest Cannondale he can find. He is very slow uphill but that mass translates into nice downhill momentum...
  4. My love affair with my Magic Mary took a hit yesterday. On a piece of track I have ridden dozens of times, a r/h kink rather than a corner. The front tyre must have hit the edge of a smallish rock causing a large tear in the tread and a tiny tear at the side wall. Its almost a carbon copy of what happened to my rock razor a few weeks ago, even on the same side of the tyre I was probably doing 30km/h and when i inspected the track, the rock that caused it looked fairly innocuous. Think I am a candidate for Huck Norris... I did manage to repair the tyre and it held pressure well enough for my ride to continue as normal. Its just not very confidence inspiring.
  5. Give the 661 recon's a ride test yesterday. They remained comfy with no pinching and stayed in place. They were reasonably cool despite the very sweaty weather down here. I did some impact tests eg kneeling on a hard floor or bumping into a wall and i think the foam they use really does work. I also had to kneel down to repair my bike and it was good to have these on while doing that. These will definitely be my everyday knee pads. In winter they will make a nice leg warmer too.
  6. Yes, its not going to work so well for the target demographic... The NH is the biggest local BMX/MTB event on the calendar... Eish
  7. The kevlar in teh covering material helps I think. My old KS pads are blemish free despite quite few abrasion incidents. What concerns me most about these fancy foam pads is the lack of a slippery tough outer cover. IMO the foam could well "grip" the ground like a tyre instead of sliding over it leading to the pad shifting and reducing its effectiveness.
  8. Enduro MTB mag did some proper impact tests and found that the 661's ( and probably other impact hardening pads) actually provided quite good impact protection. They dropped a weight on them and measured the force transmitted. That said, I have felt much pain through through my heaver pads too. I have also heard of people fracturing knee caps with DH pads on. It all depends on numerous variables
  9. hahaha, actually they aren't that nice before either - bunch up behind the knee according to my wife...
  10. I bought some 661 recon knee pads as a lightweight pad to wear on short rides in the belts from home. They weigh 150g a pair and the size L fitted me although they seem a little tight. They are a bit like the G Form pads but the better looking cousin in the family. For some reason i read the paperwork and label in the pads both of which deny that the pads are for protection at all - they are just compression garments they say. How hilarious. They are knee guards on the website and other packaging, but the fine print says they aren't. I based my purchase on reviews which obviously mentioned the light weight and protection for minor incidents only, which is why I bought them. Anyone have any G Form or Recon horror stories?
  11. This thing is aimed at Enduro and DH riders in the main I suspect. Short travel suspension presents far fewer tuning issues/options than the 120mm and over department. As forks and shocks get more settings parameters a device like this becomes more useful. But at that price they can keep it.
  12. I think you need one of each Myles. So does YT.
  13. Ya my "ancient" 26er is now more on the money than ever. And if you read the first ride review of the 27 Jeffsy, it sounds like there is barely any difference between it and the Capra except it pedals up hills better. The bike industry is such a fun place. As someone else put it - think of something a few people will want and then convince everyone else they need it too.
  14. Nice, but as usual we are ripped off in SA. The cheapest model is a R30k bike in the UK or EU but we are charged close to R50k for it? The same applies to other dealers and brands. Friend bought a Yeti ASR a year so so back - cost under R70k. Now his Epic partner just paid R100k for the same bike. Exchange rate has improved of late but the price goes up 40%!
  15. I had the briefest of test rides on a lower spec ali model (with fancy wheels though) and my impression is echoed in this review. I will say this though - my 26er felt like a BMX bike after my brief stint on the Jeffsy, and I am in no hurry to swap it out for a slower handling 29er. The only problem is the price - these bikes are still far cheaper if bought in the EU.
  16. Are the roads closed for the event or left open? If open, this kind of incident will probably repeat itself.
  17. Maybe a fad is not the right term - I am thinking of things like SS bikes and fat bikes - appeal to a few hipsters but that's about it :-)
  18. I suspect bike set up ie tyre pressure is very important but i suspect these tyres wont work very well in certain situations at all - for instance sloppy slippery stuff. They would possibly have more in common with a skimmer board on the beach than a bike tyre then. In contrast, a 2.35 - 2.5 "normal" tyre works pretty well in all situations. A fad and a gimmick more or less IMO.
  19. Can't say that Tracer looks very good in yellow and pink - for that kind of cash I'd expect less of a a 90's day glo look...
  20. I heard about this last night from someone doing timing at the event. She didn't know how the rider was so its good to get an official release. You have to wonder how this could happen at a national event...
