  1. And here I was getting all excited about an update ...
  2. Um, well, no, I just thought it might be easier to get used to the bike and learn to stand more (MTB seems to use a lot more body movement than road?). The original post (bike, not flossie's) was slightly bent but I had another lying around. The plan is to raise it slightly as I get (hopefully) more confident.
  3. Flossy, you're not alone! I've been on one ride and wasn't mad about it, but I've lowered my saddle so we'll see next time. Even on the road, I'm on the brakes far too often, and my shoulders were stiff from tenseness after the first MTB session. Hairy's also right, MTB uses different muscles from road, I've noticed. I had a look on Youtube, there are some really useful tutorials there on technique. Now, I just have to find a way of getting uphill without my forks coming off the ground, or the back wheel slipping furiously. Keep at it! We will overcome some day!
  4. I wish I had back-pedal brakes on my MTB! Man, I could control my bike so slickly in those days. Great for skids. (Not, of course, that kids ride bikes for wild fun these days, that I've noticed. Too demure, the lot of them.)

    Epic crash!

Shaolin cyclists. Big in China. The guy on the left is a Sumo wrestler in training. Big in Japan.
  6. Great opportunity to see Cape Town from a new perspective. Last month there must have been around 300 riders. Meet at 9pm underneath Greenpoint circle. No lycra! The route: From Greenpoint circle at 9:00pm Past the Stadium Into the V&A Waterfront, through the main pedestrian mall, and out the back Along the promenade as far as the library Back along the cycle path along Main Road, Greenpoint Into town to Long Street, and then all the way to the top Usually ends somewhere for drinks – last time at the Fire & Ice Hotel. http://capetownmagazine.com/events/Moonlight-Mass-Night-Cycle/2012-04-05/11_37_54336
  7. That AMPs a sexy thang.
  8. Late 70's, on the 80s cusp. With the downtube shifters, the 12-speed (as we called them) was a huge step up from the mid-70s 10-speed. That stem is also fairly advanced.
  9. I think Constantia 100 or Cycle 100 or something? They're probably the closest.
  10. A Garmin getting lost. Irony.
  11. The security company knows your alarm system and how to access your place; your insurance company knows what's particularly valuable. Somewhere there's a low-paid employee with loose lips to sink ships... Had an electrician, plumber or anyone else in recently? And why does everyone keep the external hard drive right next to the computer? Doesn't that kinda defeat the idea of having a back-up? At least your bike was safe. Or is it?
  12. In one of those "City News" inserts in the local papers, it said you are not compelled to ride on the cycle lane; it's a matter of choice. At present, at least.

    Exhaust Fumes

Have a cigarette as you ride. Works for me.
  14. There, they admit it themselves.
  15. Maybe it's just me, but that brickpaving rattles my fillings loose on the road bike. Same with the path in Seapoint. When I ride Greenpoint to Observatory, I find taking the road is faster than the cycle track. Don't know why. It's certainly more interesting.
  16. Don't get into the same situation mintsauce has ... driver said "sure fine, I'll pay for the damages" until he saw the cost and now doesn't answer calls or anything. They think bikes are cheap things until you come with the R2000 helmet, the R500 pump, the R7000 wheel ...
  17. You did the right thing and did what you could - even going back to fetch the bakkie must've been a schlepp. But ja, it really gets your moer up and your faith down when other crap / people happens.
  18. One word: Woodstock Cycleworks. Oh, two.
  19. Saw that at the Pina stand at the Argus Expo. Nice. About R10 - R11k, if I remember. But then any true SSer knows that you have to build your own bike.
  20. Pretty much the same solution. My flat isn't big enough for most things. I've a chain that I loop over my pull-up bar and under the front of the saddle. Not ideal - it's a squeeze in the doorway - but enough to work on most stuff like re-indexing.
  21. There's always lots of debate about this cable stretch business. Some say it does; others say the housing wears. Personally, I can't believe cable stretches with the low stress on it. I always park my bike on the smallest rings and haven't had to replace a cable yet. But let's say it does stretch. Simply park the bike in the lowest gear, undo the cable bolt, retension by holding with pliers, lock up the nut and re-index. Bike shops make a lot of money from the simplest jobs. Check there's nothing snagging the cable. I've even had sticky energy drink bind the cable. And lastly, if your gears go out during a race, use the barrel adjusters.
  22. Our design head - a woman - took up an arguement against the head of client service with a fire extinguisher. One short touch of the handle and a 30m X 30m area was covered with fine grey dust. Looked amazing, but tidying up took them an entire weekend, several vaccuum loads, and a year later everything was still feeling gritty.
  23. A brand activation by Engineering News? The brand promise seems to be that everything you find in the newspapers, you'll find in Engineering News. Pretty hectic though. Probably more likely to get people pissed off than subscribing. (That said, it's a satisfying thing to do to co-workers you don't like.)
  24. Oh that's terrible! Ride in a better place guys, and strength to your family and friends.
  25. True. Nothing else needed. Try to get variation in the push-ups. Not just the standard ones, but move your hands to different positions, use stairs, medicine balls, etc. Pull-ups: if you can get these puppies in the picture, or gym rings, you'll get the most incredible workout. Try doing leg-lifts for example, or Russian leg lifts for serious core training. ( They're also great for push ups - all your muscles getting into action in 3-dimensions. Check out some ideas here:http://www.ringtraining.com/articles/100-pushups-workout.html )
