  1. I am also an expert on the subject of composites and structural engeneering. I do not disagree with the carbon repairers and procedures described - there are prescribed procedures for such repairs, and the participants here sound like they do quality work. I disagree with the insurer that the frame will be the same after repair. In engineering terms, it will not, and no subject matter expert will state that it is equivalent before and after. I would not accept more than a cosmetic repair if I had an ultra light, high end frame like a Parlee, Colnago or Pinarello.
  2. This is a very good question. What are the acceptance criteria of a repair between the various parties: repairer-insurer-client?
  3. ☝️ I have one of those, it can make a very good espresso in combination with a Hario grinder. If done right, it beats the office Jura ito quality. The only challenge is to get the dosing just right. I would suggest that you get the expander gadget to make 2 espressos if you ever want to make more than one shot at a time. It is a hassle to clean and tricky keep the water from cooling down too much for a second shot.
  4. I would also ask for the proposed repair to be reviewed and approved by the frame manufacturer. If they restore the frame to the condition it was before the crash, the ride quality and stiffness should be the same. It should also not weigh more than it did before the repair. You bought a high performance, 950 gram frame, Im going to guess the repair and paint will add 100 to 200 grams. (Edit: there is no way imo that the original manufacturer would approve a repair, that frame is ???? beyond the point where it should be repaired)
  5. I just saw this. Im contemplating it instead of 2oceans. Less crowded, better scenery, possibly less expensive? ????
  6. More or less, I think. From what I understand, the plan is to add a 50km route to the Leapfrog half, that ends in Kleinmond, and have busses back to the start.
  7. I always take a chain tool on mtb rides. (Buy not road) I like having all the tools stored in 1 bundle, to be able to grab quickly out of the Camelbak. They dont all have to be stuck together, just packed so.
  8. I suspect the Valsbaai 50 will get more than a few runners, thanks to 2oceans shambles. It is an old ultra event set for revival in 2020. 50km, Gordon's Bay to Kleinmond.
  9. Ive also had bikes and sports cars screaming past - looked reckless, but no scary incidents like yours.
  10. The arrow scheme is fugly imo. Well painted, but hard pass!
  11. Some local roadies ride there every second day. Start close to first light, there is almost no traffic then. Avoid later in the day, esp during holudays when tourists take pics while driving with the other hand. From Rooiels onwards there is a wide shoulder.
  12. At least it is caliper brake Shimano, which looks waaaay better than any disk groupset, Campy or other.
  13. Applicable to this pic, too! ???? It could have been four x Mapei, had Franco Ballerini not punctured. (Roubaix 96)
  14. According to articles on the www the 4% only helps if you go faster than 4:30/km. Something to do with the carbon boost going in the wrong direction if you toe off too slow. Also, strictly for longer distances, it is slower than other specialist shoes on very fast runs <10km. Then the run is too much on the forefoot, not loading the carbon plate enough.
  15. I noticed a pair of lekker running shoes in the classifieds: https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/388341-nike-vaporfly-next/ Eye watering price!
  16. I always carry my own neutrition, to save time and you never know what you get at a WP. If you have special dietry requirements, like no carbs/gluten or halaal etc, you cant expect events to cater for that. (The spread above sounds above average, imo)
  17. Campy had by far the most elegant design since the launch of Ergopower in 1992. STI's looks improved in 2009, when they got rid of the insect antenna-like cables hanging out of the side of the brifters. Imo the modern day Campy 12 speed has lost a bit of elegance ito looks with bent in brifters, hole-free crank etc. Shimano have gained a bit of points on looks in my book, 9100 has a good, edgy industrial-style. Campy still has margin, with 12 speed and better carbon components but on a modern frame, Shimano does not look out of place to me. On a vintage bike, Campy all the way.
  18. Didn't Mapei ride Shimano?
  19. Forecast may get better during the week - keep an eye out. But best be prepared for some rain. A North-Westerly wind almost always brings rain, the exact time and intensity may differ.
  20. Prepare for rain Fri, Sat, Sun. It looks like heavy rain on Fr, lighter on Sat, clearing up on Sun. I recommend a proper rain jacket, and consider fitting a mudguard. Pack a base layer in the Camelbak - temperatures look ok, but it can be cold if the clouds are low.Tyre choise: not hardpack - ones that can clear mud with larger knoblies, further appart.
  21. I like the gloss on matt look, very nice, and parts to match. The Italia flash is a good highlight on the post. Yours? Weight?
  22. @ Morph: It came out perfectly. That is the best white colour scheme ever imo.
  23. This.Imo the quotas enforced on the first class game plays a part, then add to this the lure of good pay. Harmer, Abbott, Olivier and Morkel took plenty of County wickets recently. Stirr some ???? CSA management into that brew, (the kind that changes squad selection on midnight before the semi-final in 2015) and see SA cricket implode.
  24. Imo the sub 2 is great, but will not be significant once E-running becomes more popular, which would mean sub 1hr times ???? (Im entering Comrades as soon as they allow E-runners. What does a Segway cost, btw?)
