  2. amazing! http://youtu.be/txSboSNQINs Izhar Gafni, 50, is an expert in designing automated mass-production lines. He is an amateur cycling enthusiast who for years has toyed with the idea of making a bicycle from cardboard. He said his latest prototype has now proved itself and mass production will begin in a few months. "I have always been fascinated by unconventional technologies and I did this on several occasions. But this was the culmination of a few things that came together. I worked for four years to cancel out the corrugated cardboard's weak structural points," Gafni said. "Making a cardboard box is easy and it can be very strong and durable, but to make a bicycle was extremely difficult and I had to find the right way to fold the cardboard in several different directions. "It took a year-and-a-half, with lots of testing and failure until I got it right," he said. Cardboard, invented in the 19th century, has rarely been considered as raw material for things usually made of much stronger materials, such as metal. Once the shape has been formed and cut, the cardboard is treated with a secret organic concoction to give it its waterproof and fireproof qualities. In the final stage, it is coated with lacquer paint for appearance. In testing the durability of the treated cardboard, Gafni said he immersed a cross-section in a water tank for several months and it retained all its hardened characteristics. Once ready for production, the bicycle will have no metal parts. Even the braking mechanism, and the wheel and pedal bearings, will be made of recycled substances, though Gafni said he could not yet reveal those details because of pending patent issues. "I'm repeatedly surprised at just how strong this material is. It is amazing. Once we are ready to go to production, the bike will have no metal parts at all," Gafni said. Gafni's workshop, a ramshackle garden shed, is typically the sort of place in which legendary inventions are born. It is crammed with tools and bicycle parts and cardboard is strewn everywhere. One of his first models was a push bike he made as a toy for his young daughter, which she is still using months later.
  3. I guess the only people to blame are we. or some of us rather.
  4. awesome to hear - we got robbed last week, police were finishing their report by the time ADT got there. very impressive.
  5. Slight high jack: I have a Thule towbar-mounting euro rack (the one where the bikes stand on a platform). If I use a trailer, would it be possible / advisable / stupid to mount a cheap tow bar at the back of the trailer and carry bikes behind it instead of in top? Has anyone done it? Could save some money (no new rack on top o trailer needed). And I could use trailer and bike rack simultaneously.
  6. my rule is to ask anyone if they are OK. If not, they would hopefully tell me. I even stop my car to ask a cyclist who is stranded - but I've never even been asked for tools. Anyhow, I am sure one day I'll be the one stranded without a working tube and hoping someone asks me...
  7. All great in theory. But you should test if your local ADT dude actually knows your street name. I told them about the robbery while the guys were still in my house. It took ADT 20 minutes to get there - "he got lost because he's new to the area". maybe don't warn them when you test the system and do a reality check. Preferably at 4 in the morning. Let us know how it went!
  8. the beam will only be as good as the armed response reacting to its signal, sadly. ADT sent a technician in the morning because I questioned how the beam could not pick up a burglar taking out a window right in front of it. They can only give me feedback on Friday. they can also only give me feedback on Friday as to why their response time was 20 minutes. I think I made up my mind on not relying on them any longer.
  9. What a day this was - mostly because I am overwhelmed by all these comments! Thanks guys! The following transpired... ADT is useless - the regional manager told me I have to wait until Friday for any feedback, as the guys work at night and sleep during the day. He also told me to accept that 15 minutes as acceptable after an emergency call. I asked him to send me the cancellation documents immediately. ABSA: We are currently standing in their branch - while FNB advised me at 4:00 AM when my new cars will be delivered, Absa refuses to issue a new card because the certified ID copy was issued in 2011. They want us to get a ID book first. SAPS: brilliant so far, received another SMS, went there to get an affidavit. Am tired though and can't wait to pick up kiddo from crèche and enjoy the evening with him and my wife. I still get to keep the main things in my life., fortunate me.
  10. So I just woke up thinking "that's early for my wife to be packing her laptop bag". Wife was still sleeping, I walk into my lounge, pass our baby's room and hear noises in the entrance hall - which is quite normal when you have a cat. Except the cat was also sleeping. Got to the front door, nothing. Am listening to the birds tweeting. Unusual, I think, why can I hear the birds? Cause the entire window next to the door was gone, neatly removed. I call ADT. Turn back, wife ok, kiddo ok, laptop gone. Ten minutes later no ADT still, I scream and shout at them and call the police. They arrive before ADT does. We realize what else is gone (bag, my wallet, a briefcase where I had prepared all passports, residence permit, ID's, birth and marriage certificates to take to the dept of home affairs today to apply for my son's first real passport). FNB cancels all cards and already advises when and where my new ones arrive. Absa refuses to issue new card to my wife without ID. ADT dude is still apologizing for getting lost, and not being able to write, while police have already SMSed case number. The window is next to a brand new ADT fitted outside beam - not even 50cm. Not sure how that didn't go off. Feeling bleek this morning. Failed to keep my cave safe. And it's cold, the freezing draft taking my mojo out.
  11. When I was confused and did an Argus on a 29er, I just bought standard road tires at the Good hope Centre registration sell out, put them on, pumped as hard as my Raleigh floor pump could (8bars) and had an awesome ride. R 300 for both.
  12. I'm so going to carry my tubes like that in the next race.
  13. Standing rack on tow bar works the best - I just love the fact that I can load up bikes and all the stuff and still park in my garage - I.e. sleep in in the morning before an early race... :-)
  14. OK I do agree with you fully - and the same applies to concerts, soccer matches, mtb races etc...(sadly there are inconsiderate idiots everywhere). I also thought that the race itself must be the most dangerous one in the calendar - with 40 ton trucks passing the groups at 90 Km/h and about half a meter distance. And yet I'll probably be doing it again, and yes, I do park properly.
  15. found it next to my office and played around....
  16. yeah, this was about to happen. let's make it a "inconsiderate roadies debate", once again. I am so over this - I have got a road bike and a mountain bike, shave my face, not my legs, but wear lycra on both bikes. Oh damn, I don't fit in a box.
  17. am with you, in my case the risk of getting run over is probably smaller than being knocked out by someone who almost ran me over... and then saw what I thought of him...
  18. I drove past Cher's house the other day in LA. luckily I wasn't on my bike. That highway however reminded me of the N1 incoming in CPT, where I wouldn't want to ride my bike either.
  19. shame. maybe go to a bike shop, swear at them and see if you get advice.
  20. You really think someone would involve SAPO?! Somehow I think their are private solutions these days. And yes, CWC gets the kudos for the delivery speed, not the package handling company.
  21. the 30 000 spots were sold out in 3 hours this morning - wow, that is incredible and makes our Argus look fairly unpopular!
  22. I have no idea how I will ever survive 300km in one day, but that is a minor concern hahahah
  23. my brother has just registered me - Sweden, here I come! :-) http://runkeeper.com/race/vtternrundan-5960/31116 http://entry.vatternrundan.se/default_en.htm "VÄTTERNRUNDAN, 300 km long, is the largest recreational bicycle ride in the world. Taking place every summer in mid June, it is open to everyone from 18 and up. This is a unique possibility to experience cycling on a grand scale!"
