  1. Both my two daughters used a 2001 prado 90 series as a student car .It was paid for ,insurance is R300 a moth for 3 party and they could park anywhere they want to .Away weekends the friends all shared petrol and they used it as a comfortable long trip car .It is also saver than these modern tin cans that sell for double what that car was worth
  2. I used my lexus rx 300 for ten years as my cycling car .I can fit a XXL MTB inside ,lying flat .They arn,t the lightest on petrol ,but also super reliable and cheap to repair
  3. I eventually received goods ,but it took way more calls , emails and persuasive harsh words than it should have been . It,s not only Bike addict thou . It is rare to find good service in RSA currently .Vote with where you spend your money
  4. Standard handlebar scratch from bars overturning in fall with or without rider .All my bikes have this signature . I will just put a sticker over it .Model paint from a hobby store should work nicely if you really have to fix it ,but it is bound to happen again
  5. The rocks arn,t as sharp in the western cape as they are in Gauteng and the magaliesberg .I rode with what i use up here Vittorio Barzo and Maxxis ikon,s .More important is to have the correct sealant and enough of it .Only fresh Stan,s ,tyrejuice or ryder sealant .Those unbreakable orange tubes are crap .Ours lasted 30 minutes before puncturing .The area around the valve is also too wide and does not fit in some rims ,so they don,t allow a good seal .Take two normal robust rubber tubes and test them before .I lost an Epic medal because of the above mentioned .Robustness is more important than weight .I used a Schwalbe nobby nick in front once and with my 100kg weigh ,i never slipped on any off camber turns .My second event i used Maxxis ikon,s 2,4 back and front with no punctures .Ikon,s and schwalbe tyres are reasnoble easy to get of the rim if you need to .Vittorios are excellent but can be a monster to take of and replace again
  6. Much more info needed like age for example .Ex Springbok rugby player friend that has always been fit ,trained his whole life ,all the cardiovascular parameters are excellent ,needed a pacemaker for a heart rate disturbance .Lots of very fit people end up with large floppy hearts that give rhythm problems .Go see a cardiologist . I discovered that i have two leaking heart valves only after ten years of serious cycling
  7. I ride a Spez roubiax that is supposed to be a road bike ,but i use it as a road and gravel bike .Comfortable and i no more have worries of going of the tar and cutting across a gravel section to join up again on another tar section .I use 32mm panaracer tires on it and it is certainly a more comfortable ride than my proper BMC road bike . I would certainly consider getting a proper gravel bike like a Spez Diverge .
  8. I spoke to the manager last year before spring and already they were talking about it .The good rains we are having is not good for them .No customers and higher maintenance .When they started out we were just getting out of a drought so the trails were used a lot
  9. The problem is that even the jet spray leaves some residue on your hands and even the tiniest amount can cause a huge problem if you are far out in the sticks and have to cycle back like in this case where they were far from help .The water bottle solution is a better option in this case .I have also done it and it actually works
  10. Just a word of advice on using pepper spray .Any amount sprayed at the offending party will also end up in your own eyes .You need very little to be carried on the wind to drift into your face .The only solution is to put local anesthetic drops into your eyes .I carry a small amount with me. Pepper spray is very effective and will take anything with a tear film down in seconds
  11. Dead in RSA .Alive still in Europe
  12. I don't know why somebody would use a 36 oval on a MTB . Maybe if you have a 52 teeth at the back .A 36 oval will give you 38 X 10 at the back , maybe if you race downhill
  13. Whatever !.I have never seen a 36 oval . A 34 oval gives 32 and 36 effectively and they work for me .I know the stroke is still round ,but the power transfer of the stroke is not equal on the same leg in the up and down stroke with an oval ,and that is why they work .Gravity helps with the downstroke and then you crunch a 36 teeth downwards .On the upstroke you raise a slightly easier 32 teeth on the same leg ,it builds slight momentum because it takes less effort and gets more oxygen ,then it crunches again with momentum ,gravity helping and more oxygen on the downstroke ,ON the SAME LEG !!!!.
  14. I ride different bikes and some have oval and some round .When i change from oval to round after a long time i can definitely feel that the back of my legs work harder on the round .I prefer ovals and find climbing is better .I find the upstroke is less effort and it kinda builds momentum for the down stroke .i always ride a heavier gear with the oval than the round .
  15. I don,t think you get a 36 oval .I ride 34 oval and if you have a 52 at the back it is plenty .A 34 oval gives you effectively a 36 speed ,and with a 10 it is enough .i also have a 32 oval that climbs better ,but also works on tar . Short answer ,use a 34 oval on and thank me later
  16. I have been in a situation where a motorist ,A gym baboon in his bakkie, cut me off . Both of us went into super aggressive mode within a few seconds ,so much that this guy dropped his passenger and proceeded to look for me riding around . If we had weapons' things could have ended badly
  17. If you ride and your heart is already pumping the good stuff ,you are already in a fight or flight mode . Anything can trigger violence then , same as in a rugby game . Any car or aggressive rider is immediately a threat because you are in a vulnerable position and you will react accordingly
  18. Trainers help ,but your body works harder on a bike to keep balance and climb
  19. My time was 2h50minutes at the 30km sign .My final time 3h45 .Almost an hour to ride the last 30km .Last year i still had Epic legs from October and weighed 6 kg lighter , my time was 3h14 .According to the knowledgeable folks ,this current reverse route is about 10 min slower and that fits in perfectly with my previous times of about 3h5-10 . Only once did i manage under 3hours with a few seconds .Now for my first CTCT in Cape Town .I will be watching out for seeding races in the new year
  20. Very accurate description of my own observations. I parked at the same spot and battled to find my way back to my car . At least i had a post race warm down . I had to literally stand behind my car boot until the helpers got the message that i don,t need their help to load my bike . My time was 30 min slower than last the last event .The last 30 km is really hard and i am a cyclist . I feel sorry for the last bunches . It seems OK until Bryanston ,then the climbs start .The people next to the road were magic and it does encourage you to keep slogging on . I am now convinced that Johannesburg has no flat land anywhere but the inhabitants are great
  21. My fitness and weight is way off than previous years .I know i am going to suffer ,it is a question of how bad will the cramps be in the last 30km .In the past i have tried different ways not to cramp .Going slow at the start makes zero difference to me .I might as well just ride until i drop
  22. A proper gravel bike like a Spez diverge with futureshock is a good option ,but my hardtail is my go to for everything these days
  23. I entered on Saturday
