  1. Most interesting. I haven't really considered that beautiful piece of road a pass but the description fits. Thank you.
  2. Mostdef, an abiding memory while visiting the now out-laws in Oudtshoorn two decades ago was my Alpina taking me up the pass to camp solo on a clear and still full moon night in the snow. Thomas Baine's final and most spectacular pass, and a brilliant mini adventure. That's it, I'm already planning the road trip to (edit:) cycle the Swartberg Pass on the way to visiting the kids in CT. Thanks.
  3. Simply stunningly beautiful! And I might be qualified to comment regarding aesthetics as I've grown accustomed to being accused of being with "the most gorgeous women on the planet". What a beeyoootiful feat of design and engineering! I'd trade a kidney-and-a-half for your Mobu.
  4. It's been a fascinating Giro. Perhaps the most intriguingly strategic and exciting GT since I started watching the entirety of every GT from 2014.
  5. Righteous! Two mates and I did that to a scammer who turned out to be a Dept of Justice official. He didn't have the cash and, being a new-to-the-city renter, ended up "offering" a laptop and ALL the clothing and shoes he wasn't presently wearing. Laptop went to a retrenched guy starting a small business and great clothes were donated to charity. Cue Borat voice: "Great success!" PS. Not sure how the scammer negotiated work the next morning after being left with just the short shorts and t-shirt he was wearing.
  6. I simply love your evocative images. Two of my fave memories are from that Swartberg Pass peak. Cycling up (edit: from Oudtshoorn on my Alpina) to camp solo in the snow on a clear full moon night twenty six years ago. Spectacular. Snow, clear full moon, solitude, it's still an almost surreally beautiful memory decades later. That pass is Thomas Baines' seventeenth and last, and most spectacular pass IMO. Looking down on a lightning storm in the clouds below us while picnicking at the edge of the forest on the Prince Albert side of the peak with my young kids, also after snow.
  7. Hundreds of solo rides in the valley and I've passed homeless persons/vagrants just four/five occasions and with zero issues, perhaps being a big guy who then speeds up helps. Fat Tracks are raising funds to install cameras at valley spots with multiple escape routes to further increase safety. I ride several routes from Walmer to Summerstrand several times a week and road lanes and pavements are quite wide, and safe. It's just a few k's from Summerstrand to enter the lower reaches of Baakens Valley at the bottom of Brickmaker's Kloof, with Bridge Street Brewery right there when you exit the valley again. I'm a bit of a noob and a lot of a geezer and if you can deal with that you're welcome to PM me for a valley intro.
  8. I'm on the Baakens Valley trails no less than four times a week for the last year and a bit and I'm still a l-o-o-o-n-g way off covering all the trails. A bit of a shame that I lived just two blocks away from it in Walmer for 22 years before bagging my first MTB. McDeezy se mooooer, I'm the one REALLY loving it.
  9. I've bought from this online shop several times, including this pair of baggies in black. arsuxeo-mens-cycling-mountain-bike-bicycle-ridding-shorts-pant-wear_p984484.html Worn over various lined inner shorts, I can state that they've held up well as I've used this pair at least five times every week for almost a year now. Shape, construction and colour are still great. It's imperative to pay attention to the size guide for each item as sizing may vary a lot between manufacturers. The size guides are reliable and user reviews for each item are helpful. Edit: When I go to the site the baggies are available, yet for some reason when I click on the link in my post it states that the item isn't available. Rather go straight to the site for the baggies and other baggy options.
  10. Judging by that day's sand sculptures and the shadows we must've simultaneously been in the same vicinity. A fave route is from Fat Tracks through the Baakens Valley through the harbour along the rail lines and then on the tidal line from the harbour wall to the beacon at spring low tide.
  11. My stepdaughter thrived at what I suspect is the same school (near St George's Park), successfully finishing matric last year (like all her successful classmates, as you stated) while serving as a prefect. Brilliant school, brilliant SGB with wonderful achievements. Respect!
  12. I'm a critical care paramedic and I'd encourage you to not despair Juls13. An employee and fellow paramedic had his first coronary bypass procedure at 26 and my 83 year old mate Ron had a triple bypass two years ago. Both are well and super active, in fact Ron still keeps up with us going up Lady Slipper. No surprise as he's a geezer with legendary adventures under his belt. Having your chest sliced through and yanked open a few days ago can't be any fun, mate. PS. I'm sure we've ridden the same trails and I'll think of you as I ride along the Baakens Valley for a sundowner ride later. Hang in there mate, I imagine you'll be back in action before long.
