  1. That sucks but to be honest, that bottom section gives me the creeps. Too narrow and overgrown. I love riding the top bit - even as a single gal, I love riding that bit solo and have no worries (I get on at Craighall park, ride to the top of emmerentia and back).
  2. I started life as a mountain biker, became a roadie, started commuting and ran back to being a mountainbiker / commuter / tourer. Much friendlier on this side. We stop for people with flat tires, laugh and have fun. And: we dont ride 3 abreast. Not cool.
  3. Intervals are the things that make you puke but make you stronger. Fantastic stuff. Do lots of them and ignore the rest. Suppose you should also do at least 3 long races in between.
  4. Awesome! Thanks. May go Sunday morning. I take it I just go in on main road entrance and turn left on what looks like a track?
  5. Oh no!! You further from my work. Oh well, longer lunches here we come.
  6. St Stithians should make a mtb track, encourage students to start mtb and open it up to other mtb-ers (I would happily pay a monthly fee). Would add revenue to the school. Pity my old private school doesnt have as big a property.....
  7. I have also had terrible service there. Thought it was jsut a once or 3x off but after the 4th time where they treat me like a dumb girl and then still try sell me the completely wrong part, I refuse to go there. Seems like they only care bout jocks with plenty money. Dont bother trying to mail them - they clearly dont know how to respond, even when you are looking for expensive bike toys. Go to Achtar at Woodmead or the awesome guys at Complete Cyclist.
  8. Seriaas respect. Saw you riding along Douglas.
  9. I didnt ride the 94.7 this year but I was cruising between Fourways and Craighall when a friend of mine spotted me, pulled over for a chat and then went on. Some spectators nearby where flabbergasted by his riding a singlespeed. Think next year I am gonna join the ss club - on my new project I am wanting.
  10. That is so cool!! My little guy loves running next to my bicycle at the dog park. Would love to get him one of those rear wheel leads but where to ride with him? Have previously attached my action cam to him. Seems to make him do weird and naughty stuff tho like marking humans as his territory and beating up other dogs.
  11. A unicycle stand you say? Hmmm... Think I need to find my motorbike key fast and go on Friday (no way I am going in the car with that parking mess).
  12. I am not riding but will go to watch everyone spending money. Still recovering financially from the 09 expo. Agree that the biltong on the way out was nice.
  13. Contact Johan. Do ALL his courses and become your bike's personal slave. Cycling is the most addictive drug out there and there is no support group if you wanna stop cause people just cant stop.
  14. Its not 100% pretty but your solution is easy: doublesided tape (the nice thick rubbery one), a normal bottle cage and cable ties (optional but recommended). Otherwise the seatpost ones - and who cares about "cool" if you are concerned with hydration?
  15. Johan at yellow saddle will be able to teach you shock servicing and can teach you wheel repair too. Contact him. Think he also does repairs on wheels. You cannot go wrong with his service. He sorted my mavic crossland wheels a few years ago and I havent had issues since.
  16. Get a 25 or 27l daypack then use toe clip straps to attach. Just ensure that there are no loose straps or anything that can get in the spokes. Also, make sure that your packs have strong shoulder straps (we are going to attach the bag on at the tops of the shoulder straps and at the bottom as well). Havent bought my bag yet but have worked out how to attach.
  17. Good luck with that. I have been on a major mission to find and have discovered that SA stores do not have and are not geared for touring like european stores. Email the cycle touring guy. Otherwise, do what we are doing: convert a day pack.

    SANI2C

Train, train and train. Get used to riding 80km for 3 days in a row. 80km is a good rough average. Also learn to climb well. There is a lot of climbing. Another help will be to master downhills. (Day 2, if you can safely fly down the hills, it buys you time for the climbs) Nutrition is as important, if not more important than training. Get a race drink that works for you and get a recovery drink as well. You get spoilt with food etc on Sani but drinks and recovery is something I advise you get used to and do it on the race despite temptation not to. Otherwise: have fun in the preparation, make sure you are fit but have fun getting fit. Then, get yourselves Drift 170x cameras (the sd one takes aa batteries so is easier than charging), strap it to your head and film the trip. Also each take a camera and take as many photos as you can. I know this isnt a training tip but those pics and video will make you smile for months after and motivate you to do your next trip. Sani is an awesome ride! Gimme a shout if you want a link to my youtube clip.
  19. Thats hectic. Lay a charge and get her to pay for your bike repairs as well as for emotional damage.
  20. The conti option. Been through some wicked stuff in last 2.5 years on mine, pulled thorns out the side wall and they are still going strong.
  21. Crossmarks of a Conti Mountain King/Race King combo will be perfect. Sani doesnt have a lot of water. Just a few bridges. You want something that can climb (ie has the right amount of traction for rocky climbs with a bit of loose junk), dont worry about anything else.
  22. What about heading South towards the freestate or even closer: cycle the magalies area? I am interested to see this topic as I was thinking of finding a long weekend to do something similar. Or even do a 1-nighter.
  23. I am looking forward to this event. Should be fun.
  24. I also would like to know as I live not far away. Would be nice for an early Sat or Sun ride when I have time contraints.
