  1. Is there any hubber that is able to give advice wrt training for the DC? I have been part of a team who has completed the DC twice. Sadly we are always the last team in. Once within the stipulated time period and once out of the time. This was very disappointing for me. The motto has alsways been to bring all riders home together. Although I did not agree, this has been achieved. You must understand that we are a social team and not all the riders no each other. Every year we have about 7 new riders. The strenghths, stamina, age and gender in the team vary considerably. Our weekly training rides are haphazard without much structure and vision. This year I would like to play more of a leadership role in the team, but need to come with some sound advice and ideas wrt our training. Seasoned hubbers are asked to be of assistance and any constructive help would be appreciated. (view my gallery to see last years pics of our team on the DC)
  2. Personally I was disappointed in the INVESTIGATIVE journalism of Carte Blanche! So much more could have been shown and featured. This is a topic close to our hearts, but how sad was this programme put together. Is bike hijacking not taking place in any other parts of the country? Who is buying these bikes for a R1000? How do they get taken out of the country and who is doing this? I am sure one bike is not taken at a time, so there must be some kind of syndicate. Be more specific wrt the countries these bicycles are being taken to. Who is at the receiving end once the bike arrive and are they sold on the street or in lbs! Who in SA is buying these bikes? Sure they are not only stolen for export. Were the persons caught ever sentenced? Why only interview one lbs owner? (Just some questions) As usual I am waiting on the hubbers to slap me with there snide remarks. W What about undercover investigation by Carte Blanche.
  3. This guy must be joking. How do you think some of the worlds top cyclist in the TdF came along! BY DEVINE INTERVENTION, sorry CONCEPTION lol Ok, for the record, I have 1 son.

  9. Snap out of it MALLO! We are never going back to Apartheid. Dont be so afraid to break from tradition and look at the facts. Apartheid can and will never return if you vote for another party e.g the DA
  10. 'WHY' you ask! Simply put, the WC is the best run Province. All and sundry are flocking here for jobs, housing and service delivery. 'WHY' dont they all go back to their respective provinces! I actually cant wait to cast my vote. Some people live in the past. This is 2011.
  11. i just luv this thread. thanx guys for brighting my day with all the different 'rollers'
  12. My thoughts and prays go out to the cyclist who lost his/her life. Three suggestions: 1. A permanent memorial thread 2. An awareness cycle ride in every province, same day and time- can be organised by PPA or any other 3. Cycle Safe advocacy campaign- this by Pick 'n Pay, ABSA, Cell C, The Argus, Coronation, ect: we only hear from them with big events. A regular published ad, in this regard, will get them far more mileage
  13. Bike crash pooch costs a packet April 13 2011 at 12:20pm By Zelda Venter A Jack Russell terrier like this one brought down two cyclists in Pretoria - now his owner is being held liable for the damages. A Jack Russell terrier is costing its owner dearly after he ran out from behind a row of garbage bins in Monument Park into two cyclists. The dog’s owner, Jacques Fourie, has agreed to cough up R52 921 for the damages suffered by Daniel Prinsloo. Prinsloo initially claimed more than R65 000 in damages in the Pretoria High Court. His sister Petri, who was also injured, claimed more than R192 000 in damages. Fourie conceded 100 percent liability regarding the damages she suffered, but the amount of compensation she is due to receive will only be determined at a later stage. This part of the trial was postponed indefinitely. It was stated in papers before court that the brother and sister went cycling on the morning of September 12, 2007 along Makou Street in Monument Park. The dog, suddenly and “without warning”, ran out from behind the garbage bins on the pavement and crossed the road in front of the approaching cyclists. Both rode into the dog and fell from their bicycles, suffering several fractures. They blamed Fourie for their misfortune, stating that he failed to take adequate steps to prevent the dog from leaving his premises and failing to safeguard persons lawfully using the street. Both had to undergo treatment in hospital for which they are claiming, and for the loss of their cycling shoes, helmets, and repairs to their bikes. They are also claiming general damages for pain and suffering. - Pretoria News -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GLAD HE HAS TO PAY UP

    Formula 1...

Been watching religiously for almost 25yrs now and thought I'd give it another season after my viewing deminished considerably over the past 3 yrs. The racing is still dull and boring. Nothing has improved. I say bring back refueling and another tyre manufacture. 'Old School' F1 was still the best. (Ayrton Senna fan)
  16. Thanks for the education. That is a real pity especially with the event taking place in SA.
  17. http://live.ironmanlive.com/Event/Spec-Savers_Ironman_South_Africa I really do find this pathetic of Super Sport as all of us pay so much for DSTV. There are so many repeats presently on, why not cover the Ironman SA live!
  18. Who cares if the Camelbak is worn on your back or front. +1
  19. yet another. far to many! so sad. friends and family are in my prayers.
  20. Yes, the 1st and last stage being televised live on Super Sport is really appreciated, but what about the other more important and more interesting stages. I am seriously disappointed in the 30min of coverage on DSTV dedicated to this world class event. It shows the pros but what about the other riders, some hubbers, who slog away daily. They actually make the Epic what it is. Use this event to showcase SA just like they do in the TdF. Besides explaining where the route goes through do a feature on the wine farms and the type of wines they produce etc. Come on SS strive for better. Lift the bar. I have even more admiration for all the riders who partake in this event as I have been following more closely this year. (check out my pics of the Prologue in the members section) At R35 500 per team at least they too should also be featured.
  21. Motorist punched me, says cyclist March 29 2011 at 01:30pm By Bronwynne Jooste IOL new smar 29 ca wheeldon done INDEPENDENT NEWSPAPERS Andrew Wheeldon, director of the Bicycle Empowerment Network, says a motorist assaulted him while he was cycling near Claremont. Picture: Matthew Jordaan A Cape Town cyclist has laid an assault charge against a motorist after a road rage incident in which the motorist allegedly punched him. Andrew Wheeldon, the director of the Bicycle Empowerment Network, said he was cycling towards the corner of Rosmead Avenue and Lansdowne Road, near Claremont, when the incident took place on Sunday afternoon. Wheeldon said he was cycling along when a motorist jumped a stop street. “It was a thoroughfare for me, so I just shook my head. Then he drove for about 10m (ahead of me), when he suddenly braked and reversed.” Wheeldon said as he passed the vehicle, the driver flung his door open, narrowly missing him. The driver overtook him and again slammed on his brakes. “This happened around three times, and I would just drive around him.” At the Rosmead and Lansdowne intersection, Wheeldon stopped at a red robot, while the motorist drove onto the adjacent slipway. “I saw him stopping his car in the middle of the road, getting out and walking towards me. I could have jumped the robot, but I wasn’t going to endanger anyone’s lives.” “He came up to me and was very aggressive. “He asked me whether I thought I was hero. I said no, I had shaken my head because he jumped a stop street.” Following a verbal exchange, Wheeldon said the man hit him. “He swung a punch, which connected with my jaw and I told him: ‘That’s assault.’ “He then asked: ‘What are you going to be do about it, hero?’ I told him I would be laying a charge with the police.” Wheeldon then cycled to the Claremont police station, with the motorist driving close behind him. “Then when I turned around, he had disappeared.” Another motorist, who had witnessed the incident, took pictures of the last part of the altercation and captured the motorist’s number plate. This information has been handed to police. Police spokeswoman Captain Angie Latchman confirmed that police were investigating a case of assault. Wheeldon said the Bicycle Empowerment Network had noted a large number of similar incidents. “On a weekly basis, we hear of cyclists being harassed by motorists,” he said. “It usually starts with a traffic infringement on the part of the motorist and then, in some cases, the cyclist will lift his hands or show some kind of sign.” Wheeldon, who has been cycling for just over 30 years, said motorists should bear in mind that there was not an “equitable relationship” between themselves and cyclists. “Motorists should not use their cars as weapons. If I fall into you, at worst I could scratch your car, at worst, I could die.” His advice to cyclists is not to provoke motorists and to remove themselves from a potentially violent situation. Stephen Hayward, the chairman of the Pedal Power Association, said both motorists and cyclists should obey the traffic laws. “Motorists and cyclists need to respect each other and the rules of the road. If this happens and everyone behaves, we won’t have altercations.” Hayward said cyclists who felt they were being harassed should go to the nearest police station and avoid confrontation. - Cape Argus bronwynne.jooste@inl.co.za
  22. http://www.rtmc.co.za/ Just googled them. Seems like they have been around since 1995 already. The website makes provision for anyone to become a VPTO (Voluntary Public traffic Observer) The VPTO should be glad that they are protected by anonimity. I suppose it gives the average Joe some status. A speedcop in plain clothing. A dog without a bite. Why now all of a sudden are they sending out letters.
