  1. Thanks Konafan, might be worth fiddling around with the existing one. I know that if I do 100km races, my pinkies go numb. Always thought it was lack of fitness, but my coach assures me after completing KalChal that my base is fiiine (always nice to hear!)
  2. Damn! Everyone who knows me knows that I don't really do the road thing, except for on my IDT and occassionally when the situation really calls for it (skinny wheeled freaks, ptuoa!) Sorry, a bit of Tourette's there! Anyway, I don't really want to spend moola on a road bike. Anyone got a really cheap frame for me! I'm running Shimano 105, and deep section rims, just need new frame.
  3. Hi all, I may have been riding for a while now, but I still haven't found the answers to all my questions! The day before KalChal, I wanted to hop on my MTB for a leg loosener, but broke a valve (looong, embarassing story!). So I hopped on my road bike... which immediately felt very wierd. OK, so I know it's wierd to have no suspension, but this felt like it was too short a top tube, making me feel hunched over. I had a look the other day when lending my bike to cat-i for Afriman, I've got a size 50 frame. Should I be on a bigger frame? What is the general opinion (I'm 1.76m tall)? Any advice would be great!
  4. I use my road bike on the IDT and my MTB outdoors. This way I don't need to change my IDT setup to ride offroad. Do you have a road bike? Might be worth investing in a cheap one.
  5. Mampara, just wait. Actually just come to Botswana with me next year for the Kalahari Challenge
  6. cervelo, Subaru Outback. Not cheap...
  7. Thanks guys, this is useful. Any more?
  8. This is what I know: Lube chain after every ride, ready for next ride Check tyre pressure before every ride Use a chain measure and if chain has stretched by more than 10% (?), replace As often as possible, clean your bike, focusing on chain, gears, front and rear shock and derailleurs My bike has now done about 678km, when is it time for a major service?
  9. Hi all, Needing to learn about what to check on your bike and when. I just had to pay R5000 for a service on my car because the brakes were worn down to the point of irrevocably damaging the discs, so I not only had to service my car, but also replace the discs. Now with the car, I knew what the problem was, firstly I was overdue on the service, and I had heard the brakes (ouch!) BUT, when do you know to fix stuff on the bike? And when does a bike need to be completely disassembled in a service?
  10. Hey! I also bought one and put it in my spares kit, and got to use mine on Sunday. Only problem was I bent the valve... third one in 2 weeks!!
  11. Don't tell me you got three testicles !!! HAHAHAHA!!!!! No IanJ, got a chafed sore on my bum that made riding fairly difficult :-D
  12. If only I'd read this before Kalahari Challenge...!
  13. I did this race last year and suffered all the way to the end, but not sure if I want to do it if it's at Northern Farm!
  14. What can I say GoLefty, it was a good thing Jean-Luc bailed me out! JL, thanks for all that high tech talk! Now I can use words like progressivity with confidence when I talk about my bike!!
  15. Thanks DR, but I need to be in Midrand by 9am (gulp!). I'll see if I can fit in a ride Sat afternoon, otherwise I'll just ride on Sunday.
  16. Most of the time, it's much of a muchness and you will need to ride a few designs to see what suits you. Some designs use a single pivot design. This means that as the rear triangle moves, it directly compresses the rear shock. The main benefit of this is simplicity. (I stand to be corrected?) Some use a single pivot with remotely activated shock. The benefits of this are less pedal bob (i.e. you want the rear triangle t move when the bike passes over a bump, not when you apply pressure downward on the pedals. The other designs are usually multi-pivot, and usually try and improve the activation of the shock. The ideal is a shock that doesn't lose power on uphills, handles small bumps smoothly, but can still soak up the huge knocks. At the end of the day, try out a couple of bikes, find one you like, learn about it's rear suspension design, and MOST IMPORTANTLY learn how to argue that your design is far superior to everything else in the market! This does become tricky when your expensive Santa Cruz shares a design with the value for money Raleigh, but you will have to find your own arguments for that
  17. Sorry DR, sat morning is HECTIC! But riding from Pta East on Sunday, keen?
  18. Good use of Photoshop, but brilliant nonetheless!
  19. You should know better than to tease us like that! On the other hand, I'm just impressed that I want to ride!
  20. Hehehehehe, and so it is that vicious rumours start!
  21. slowjoe, do a search...
  22. Oooh, fast one Thyolo. You're so fast, when you switch off the light, you're in bed before it gets dark!
  23. I FLY is out riding, he'll post details as soon as he's back (and yes he is suitably chastised for being out riding whilst the rest of us are at work!!)
