  1. In fact, it has been advocated that you should do exactly that, for the reason I've highlighted in your post. If my hazy memory serves me correctly, the editor of Ride did so a couple of years ago. THe theory is that it gives you a greater "presence" on the road, stopping traffic to try and squeeze past, where there is no squeezing to do. Same principle led to the advice of keeping a meter or so between you and the kerb --> gives you room to maneuver when the squeezing starts... I don't subscribe to the former theory, but do apply the latter, where possible.
  2. Oops I also started one --> was mine one of the three?
  3. Follow this link and: Flame this guy (I unfortunately can't --> my employer blocks me from commenting there) Thumb up all positive comments. Thumb down the rest. http://www.news24.co...clists-20120516
  4. Well ,why did they not reccie it for Jacob, to begin with, and simply now pass the knowledge on to him?
  5. and I was tempted to give you a " ", but am scared that that other dude will get personal again and (re-)try and chase me of the HUB, so I won't.
  6. Ha ha Although you might read "denial" in my name, it is actually a wordplay on Icon(ic) Whereas one named the same as the dark arts? Hhmm!
  7. You have to be WAY sick, to don cycling clothes, walk on cleats with a bike in hand, in an attempt to rob a cyclist-in-a-car --> you did right, me thinks, and do it again
  8. If you are driving in the Namib desert and it is the first vehicle you've seen all day, then Yes. Ifyou are walking the Fishriver Canyon and it is the only other party you've encountered since starting 3 days ago, then Yes. I guess the Pagan did not encounter more than 2 other riders this morning, given the time of year, and time of his post.

    LBS loyalty

LBS is not necessarily "Local" anymore --> This I found out the hard way. LBS stands for that guy that will always listen, no matter how busy he is; that will always fit you in, no matter how the crisis is all of your own making; that will NEVER shaft you, and you are so confident of that, that you'll never shop around and never ask a price and never doubt the payment size; that knows your name, and those of your family and what they are doing. I could go on, but let me finish with this: I recently moved to Stellenbsoch, but Mark from Mark's Bicycle shop wil remain my LBS, even if I move to Timbaktu. Just saying
  10. There is no need to have bike frames in ads with half-naked ladies... That way, we could have seen the left one as well
  11. I found in life my 5c coin is the bergie's R50 note...
  12. Nope, but you probably did not attend Kindergarten? Coz that's where they teach you already that pedestrians/runners should face the traffic, for very obvious reasons (looks like dynamite had a point on your reasoning ability ) As to them not yielding: I'm with you again! I recently came down Polkadraai early morning in the dark, car on brights approaching and had about a nano-second after it passed, to swerve violently to avoid catapulting into 2 (Comrades?) runners --> I was doing around 60 at the time...
  13. Two Qz here reaaly: Is it OK to ride on the pavement? Yeah, with all the caveats mentioned. Is it LEGAL to ride on the pavement? No, but read my comment on the thread referenced by dynamite. Disagree. Legally, you need to watch out for pedestrians, so you should be able to spot a cyclist too. If you're blind-sided, you need to get out of your car and make sure the pavement is clear. Now, if this dumb@$$ cyclist rides too fast, well then you've got a point.
  14. Probably should don a flamesuit first but: Why can't we (meaning Seffricans) be adult about this? Trafficrules are there to ensure the safety of all road users, but they don't (and probably can't easily) cater for the peculiarities that is cycling*. Which is safer: to slow-roll approach a 4-way stop, and gun over it, as soon as it is safe to do so in company with a car "legally" entitled to cross, or to come to a stop, uncleat, wait for your turn, start again, at the same time re-cleating... You get my drift. So, I'll venture no cyclist obey the rules all the time, but nor should they --> it would not be safe to do so. I can go on, but gotto work Edit: forgot to do my asterisk: There is a big difference between somebody on a bicycle and a cyclist, but that is a different topic again...
  15. +100 to all affirmative posts above. Obviously you also need to follow the other sensible options too --> the shot only covers the major strings, and there is the risk of a mutation later in the season. Get it as soon as possible, continue with vit C and Bob's your auntie's husband.
  16. Yeah that's the way to do it: Tell everybody, so that you would be too ashamed to start again. Do it on a "memorable" date. I quit smoking midnight 31 Aug/1 September 1988 --> drew the last time 5 seconds before midnight and exhaled into Spring!
  17. Try Woolies
  18. WOW! You plan spending thre whole day out there?! Drink one of those bottles beforehand, replace another with water, sip the drink-bottle interchanged with water every third "go", treat the GU as your emergency fix om top of Chappies.
  19. 10 guys will give you 20 opinions :-) There is no silver bullet: you need to experiment for yourself, me thinks. (Start your experimentation with Octance - works like a charm, not as expensive as some. Might be a bit sweet for a GI32 palate though, so easy on the mix)
  20. Same topic, but different tack. I read sometime ago that hot weather actually improves time for sprint-events on the track. Hence, there's an expectation of world records galore at the Olympics. Don't have time to gugl this now - maybe somebody else can and educate the rest of us as to the reasons :-)
  21. I beg to disagree " I am looking for XL frame, 10 speed, Aluminium or carbon fibre." Continuing then with examples that he had a look at, which happened to be Tiagra equipped, hence my comment I did give an alternative to soften the price-tag's impact too. What I thought the astute reader would also realise, is that I (attempted) a kind/gentle approach of saying: Dude, you've progressed from a tricycle to something barely better. Now you want to replace it with another entry level bike (Tiagra IS entry level). Seriously, you don't need to own everything between entry and worth-your-while --> it is ok to jump to soemthing worth your while. Anyway, my trippance
  22. At least buy something with 105, but preferably Ultegra - the price jump is not that much. Try getting a 2011 (or better still, earlier) model --> far cheaper and it was ALL THE RAVE a mere 12 months ago
  23. If it has been said - sue me... Problem starts with pros doing it all the time --> and then Phil et al has the audacity to explain that it is ok because it will be picked up by a souvenir hunter - yeah right. (His conviction is starting to waiver lately though - almost as if he is not believing himself anymore.)
  24. Hammer does provide a nice bottle that you can fill from the larger container - cheaper that way too...
  25. NO!! This is aboslutely not the way to do it That is what results in hte pace being picked up, and the lady will not be able to hang on at the back --> when your turn is over, you fall back. The next guy should not pro-actively take over - he should be forced to take the lead. Period. That sommer at the same time addresses the problem of staying out in front too long and to some extent, getting the wheel-suckers to do a bit in front.
