Hi all, is anyone else still struggling with the reseeding? I only received my start time yesterday, so 3 days after re-seeding officially closed. They put me in MM after I started B last year and finished 03:12 - I was aiming to get back to sub 3 this year. They reseeded me to J and I re-submitted, but since then they are quiet on WhatsApp and email. Anyone with a similar experience?

They were pretty quick with me, moved up from EE to N. I contacted them via Whatsapp.

  2. So I have a question, not sure if anyone knows the answer. I haven't done a 947 road race since 2015. I have done 11 of them previously but been doing mainly MTB and did the 947 55km one in 2019. I've registered to do it this year but because I haven't done it in few years will I be starting at 10:00 with the newbies or will my previous ones carry some weight at least? Not looking for a super early start but right at the back can be a bit of a nightmare.

R35k gets you the Dash Alloy. With a RS Judy fork at 120mm (it’s okay in 100mm guise, but too flexy at 120), which is pretty poor, and an SX cheap as chips plastic drivetrain…. At that price point used just makes so much sense. You could easily get a 1 to 2 year old bike with decent forks and a proper drivetrain, like GX or XT. Might need a new chain and cassette, but that’s kind of irrelevant because you would be changing the SX components for new ones pretty quickly anyway.

now, before I get lynched, I think titans are great, and I think their top end models are amazing value. But at R35k, you can do better elsewhere.

Friend of mine bought one a few months ago, his came with x-fusion so maybe they changed the spec. Didn't know SX was so ***. Interesting.

The big elephant in the room here is the customer “can you fix it BUT I don’t want to spend a lot of money…”

    #thereinliestherub

No the big elephant is, “sure leave your bike with us, we’ll charge you for parts that we don’t replace and not fix the bike properly.” Don’t put the blame on me, the client here. I’ve paid a lot of money in good faith actually.

Hang on, not quite fair that comment. It's an old bike, old tech and old parts. You need to take it to a specialist to sort that as most lbs nkwadays are more inclined to newer tech stuff

Yes, I know the lbs you took it to the first time might have ripped you, but perhaps you should have checked first to see if they can assist with older stuff.

No matter how much make up it takes, it's still an old duck

They literally charged me to replace parts they didn't replace. If they couldn't do the job they should have said so in the first place, that's on them. They certainly didn't do me any favors by taking my business.

I cant help with the problem at all, as I am not technically inclined. (2 left hands.) But, boy do I sympathise.  There is nothing worse then having to shlepp a bike up and down to one or more bike shops, coming out poorer with every visit, wasting oodles of time, all to no avail. My wife dreads this happening to me, as I insist on regaling her with my woes until the issue is fixed.

I once had a creak on my road bike that nobody could fix. After replacing bb, pedals, headset, trying different saddles and wheels, and lord knows what else, it eventually turned out to be the saddle post in the end. But it went on far ages, and it nearly put me in Tara. As a token of her love, the wife  pretended to be interested and engaged, and appropriately horrified at the naughty bike shops,  but the boredom with my histrionics was hard to hide.

    hope you get it sorted.

Thanks man, I've lost faith more and more in bike shops over the years. I understand completely why people give up and equip themselves to do it eventually!

Remember that the whole drive train is a system. The best thing you can do is replace the chain pretty often, but if you allow the chain to stretch, then it in turn wears out the gears it engages with. If that happens you have no choice but to replace all the gears and chainring. Getting half arsed at this point will just mean that whatever new parts you fit will get quickly wrecked by the old parts you left behind.

Looking at the bike, and considering the lack of spares (at least when I was looking) for older bikes, you may well be better served by doing a 1x conversion to get it up to speed? WE did this on my sons bike, which grossly overcapitalised it, and then soon after he sold it to buy an enduro bike!!

I'm seriously looking at this, does it mean having to change hubs as well?

A Mtb triple chainring FD is essentially the same across 7, 8, 9 and speed systems. The difference between one for 40t and 44t isn’t so significant. What is is the degree of wear on those parts

So should work with the 10 speed as well? The chain and cassette are new, chainring is toast judging by the comments. Just amazes me that two bike shops couldn't pick this up each after doing a major service

  9. I think you guys have helped me figure out the problem here, I had a close look at the chainring and FD. Is it possible that the derailleur is not necessarily too high but the chainring is too small? The derailleur SLX FD-M660E is supposed to work off a 44 chainring and the one I have is a 40. That derailleur is also only supposed to be for 9 speed from what I can see and mine is 10?

  10. I'm at my wits end and about to give up on a second hand dual suspension I bought a few months ago. The bikes history is it fell off he back of a bike rack but not at high speed. The gears gave trouble after that, even snapped a few chains. I decided to buy it to fix up and use myself. I took the drivetrain off my hardtail and basically swopped the parts. The bike actually worked fine for a few months until it needed a service. I decided to take it in, I was told the chain needed replacing, the cassette needed replacing, the gear cable housing and the BB set as well. The parts were all supposedly replaced, even though I later realized they hadn't all been but lets leave that rant for now. The gears ended up being a disaster, the bike wouldn't even change onto big chain ring. I took it back and when I tested it the chain kept being thrown off the big chainring this time. I decided to take it elsewhere as I didn't even have the patience to go back there again. I took it to another shop that were at least a lot more helpful and made an effort to try fix the bike properly. They said they thought the problem may have been solved but they didn't even want to charge me until I was happy, they said the problem could have been the derailleur hangar was bent which made sense actually considering it's history. I paid them anyway because I appreciated their honesty. The gears were better but slipping on big chainring, I took it back and asked them to give it a proper major service which I was happy to pay for even though it had recently been 'serviced' . They changed the rear derailleur wheels and the gear cable housing as that hadn't been changed after all. The gears are however still slipping in big chainring, specifically under load. I don't really know what to do now but I can't keep throwing money and replacing parts as the whole process of elimination is getting a bit expensive especially considering its an old bike. Is there anyone who thinks they can sort out the problem, I'm at a stage now that I might just sell the bike as is, and disclose the trouble upfront and pick my battles rather? I would actually upgrade the whole drivertrain to a 1*11 or 12 but I definitely don't want to go to that expense if the problem persists. Appreciate any input you may have.

  11. Not shooting you down, but I see it differently.

Cape Towns population of 5 million odd, will use 125 million litres every single day if we stick to the severe 25 litres per person per day. 2 million litres that the CTCT will bring in from elsewhere will then make really no difference if you look at the bigger picture, The 30/40/50 thousand extra visitors for 3 days will also make no difference to the eventual outcome.

But sending the signal that Cape Town is closed for business will mean a couple of hundred million Rand loss for city businesses, job losses......not good. Much better to make the right plans, prepare and show the world that Cape Town can DO IT! No matter what.

I hear what you're saying and in theory you're right but from what I understand majority people weren't sticking to 50l so how will they stick to 25l? I don't see it as a financial problem as much as it will be a health problem. Nobody knows the real repercussions because its never happened in a major city before and that's scary.

Anyway I hope day zero doesn't come but I still see people under the impression that its an idle threat or a government hoax, those people may well be in for a big surprise if they don't wake up.

    Just my 50c anyway.

  12. I already know people will shoot me down in flames now but I cannot for the life of me understand how anyone could think having the Cycle Tour is even a consideration. I don't care how you justify replacing the 2m litres odd that will be used, rather cancel but allow people to enter on a donation basis and use that money to pump the 2m litres into the system anyway.
