  1. treat it like a fun ride, with streets/roads to yourself and no cars.

Stop for coffee/beers along the way and don't ride your road bike.

Sure, the scenery may be boring, but that doesn't mean you can't have fun. The spectators love the guys that interact with them.

I've done that more than raced it... my £2 worth.

Couldn't agree more, raise some money for charity and have a jol on the mtb. Road bike stays at home this year.

  2. I must say I'm quite amazed at how much weight people have attached to this points system, I was also quite annoyed when the goalposts were moved but happy that I decided not to opt for the watch. I can understand the frustration around 2 years of commitment to a novelty like that. I'm certainly not going to change the way I train or get annoyed or bitter if I do or don't get the points. Discovery must fit into my life, not the other way round. My training is based around my needs and goals.

  3. I understand what you're saying but stop worrying about other people. Are you battling to achieve the weekly target?

No, I go to gym (and actually train there) a few times a week and with my weekend rides I get points so I'm more than ok. The problem lies with people who don't like gym and train via HR. we all know that training for extensive periods at 80% max HR is not easy when you're fit. So the people actually putting in the real work aren't benefiting from what I see.

  4. This rewards system has become the biggest dog show, they're so paranoid about people cheating the system, but now if you swipe your gym card and have a coffee at gym 3 or 4 times a week you get 100 points each time and meet your target every week without breaking a sweat. Meantime people like Daryl Impey going on 4 hour rides get the same points. A full Ironman is 300 points. Hilarious.

  5. yeah, after the fact is fine. Can't do anything then, and it could be used as the basis to log a claim on an existing policy, depending on what is highlighted.

After all, you can't disclose what you don't know, can you? And a life policy is granted / approved on the person's health status at the time of application, not at the time of claim. So post-policy investigation is fine. Just don't expect to be able to amend / increase your cover if they find something!!!

From what I remember if you are informed of, or find out that you have a condition that develops after you take cover and you don't inform your insurance, then you stand to lose cover relating to that condition? I'm not positive so I'm interested to know if this is the case or not?

  6. As per the others the best is to just link GC to Disco.

You can lync GC to Strava so your workouts will get to Strava with all data. Incl HR.

I'm not 100% but the 235 has optical HR? If so, I would assume it doesn't transmit over BT so there will never be native Strava intergration for HR. The BT on the watch is for GC syncing.

Does have optical HR, makes sense.

  7. Can I ask you guys to help me out please.. I recently bought a Garmin Forerunner 235 in order to get the extra points for Vitality Rewards. It works perfectly, the problem I am having is getting Strava to pick up my HR on it. I have bluetooth connected but it doesn't pick it up so the ride gets recorded on Strava and Garmin but only the Garmin has my HR data so Discovery don't allocate the extra points.

What the easiest way to use these two before I ride in order to post to Discovery with all the info?

Apologies, I'm sure this has already been covered, its just too much to sift through.

  8. Was at D circle at 6:00 but went through to the start at 6:10, couldn't see anyone with cable ties and doesn't really help I don't know anyone by face. Maybe I was a bit early, or late? Anyway well done to all!

  9. Unfortunately I'm worse than yesterday. I'm down with a proper bug and no chance of riding a bike any time soon. I'm so sorry for dropping you guys. I'm totally depressed and hating the world right now. Good luck to everyone for tomorrow. Have a jol :).

Sorry to hear that, get better soon and thanks for initiating all of this!

  10. I'm going to see the doc this morning. I think I've got tonsillitis - not feeling great.

Based on what the doc says, and how I feel early tomorrow morning when I wake up, I'll make a call then as to whether I make the drive to JHB or not.

Will be absolutely gutted if I don't make this thing.

That sucks, hope you can make it after all of this.

  11. Just for everyone's knowledge - the Bryanston downhill- is it Cowley? - has been completely retarred and is in absolutely perfect condition.

    Rob

It's Homestead I think, has this been resurfaced? Definitely needed it.

  12. As far as recovery goes, I think the points worth mentioning are:

    1. After the wilds, there is the long descent to the M2 (past ponte).

    2. Jan Smuts section 1 (from Parktown boys to Zoo lake)

    3. Jan Smuts section 2 (from Hyde Park centre to Conrad drive)

    4. Homestead past the golf course (it's also worth mentioning here to BE ALERT on this stretch, the road is not great, and it's an EXTREMELY fast section)

    5. Last bit of Grosvesnor road down to Witkoppen

    6. Malibongwe just before Kya sands

    7. Cedar down to the Jukskei crossing

IMO, these are the only places that you will be able to freewheel, and gather your thoughts, because the rest of the time is going to be a balls to the wall effort.

I don't want to put anyone off, but a sub 3 is not an "easy" ramble around JHB, and definitely doesn't allow water stops and pee breaks etc.

Couldn't agree more with number 4, VERY DANGEROUS section!
