Dunno if I'm being daft or just ignorant.

If I see an item advertised here, I'm going to send a message to the seller to enquire if the item is still available. How else are the potential buyer going to know if the item is still available or not. I always add my real name and Tel number to my enquiry.

If the seller is a half decent human being, he can respond in one of the following ways.

    1) Yes, it is still available, are you interested?

    2) Yes, but there is a sale pending, should it fall through you are next in line / no. xyz in line

    3) Sorry, it's sold already.

    4) Don't waste my precious time by asking such a stupid question, you imbecile. DON'T YOU KNOW THE HUB RULES FOR BUYING 2nd HAND PRODUCTS ON OFFER BY A PRIVATE SELLER.

BECAUSE  YOU CAN SEE THE AD AND IT ISN'T MARKED AS SOLD!!!

Yes there will be the exception where someone sells something and forgets to mark it as sold, but let's operate on status quo, not exception.

Also, if they're not interested, why did they waste your time by saying is it available to start with?

    It grinds my gears!

    Rant off.

As much as I love Teng Tools (and have a lot of their tools), their prices are on the steep side now.

As the OP is looking at AFFODRABLE options - Addendorfs is the go to supplier.

Torque wrenches .... not the place to buy cheap ...

I'd rather pay a little more with the comfort of knowing I only have to buy once in my life. Ardendorff has a place, but when it comes to a precision tool like a torque wrench it's worth investing in better quality.

  3. glad you got away relatively unscathed, sounds super brazen😤

99% chance that scum comes from Ebor road (parallel to Main road in the pic). My father owner a workshop in that street and it’s another world… drugs, prostitutes and generally unsavory characters going up and down. The Uli Heigt butchery building is basically a brick squatter camp.  Glad I never have to go there again.

Again, no disrespect meant, read my previous post. In those minutes where the cyclists chose their rights over those of motorists, you could have had a accident involving multiple vehicles and maybe even some of the cyclists, given the narrow road. So yes, sorry you feel offended. Enjoy riding!

How narrow? Wide enough for there to still be 1m between your car and the cyclists when you pass them?

  5. Has anyone else noticed the increase in reckless driving by minibus taxis between Bakoven and Suikerbossie during the week lately?

Either there is an increase in the number of taxis on that route and they're just driving like taxis or the few that have always run that route are just driving more recklessly which is why they are standing out. I have seen 3 very near misses (with cars when overtaking irresponsibly and bikes when they wander into the yellow line) in the last couple weeks.

This morning riding from Seapoint towards Victoria drive as you take the turn by the bus stop to head up towards Main Road three "characters" were heading down the hill. The guy at the front saw me and lifted his hand to take a swing at me while he veered towards me. I made eye contact and sussed out his two buddies already starting to unclip and getting ready to transition into extreme violence mode. In my head, during that split second it took, I was able to dismount and grab the leader and either fling him head first into oncoming traffic or again head first through the passenger window of the closest parked car. Just as I decided to go into action mode and start dishing out the hurt he suddenly decided to let go and carried on down the hill. I finished my ride albeit with some close calls due to traffic and the wind over Chapman's trying to chuck me over the edge. Just another day in Cape Town.

Just to clarify… are you referring to the bus stop before turning left into Queens Road just after Strolla?

  7. Regarding the device, have a look at the Garmin Edge Explore 2. Its bigger than the 500 & 800 series and only marginally smaller than the 1000 series. It has most of the features of the rest of the Edge series with the exception of mtb dynamics and some of the advanced training features (interval workouts, stamina and daily suggested workouts) as its focus is on navigating. The problem is it doesn't appear to be available in SA. If you know someone traveling from the UK that could bring one home for you, you can get one for GBP220.

Re nutrition, agree with Dappere, but I find Cadence marathon does't agree with my stomach (that's a me issue, not Cadence).

The problem with going vigilante on these perps is that it escalates, and before we know it they are shooting first and asking for your bike later

In this case, if they have guns, why are they chucking bricks?

On the balance of probability, I'd take the chance I think

Anything that we do would be very much the wild west, which is ridiculous in and of itself. But I see no other option (assuming anyone feels it is a fight worth having).

Well complacency certainly isn't going to change anything and I have little faith in the authorities!

    I'm free tomorrow morning🤷‍♂️

    What's your suggestion?

This has to be the same individuals in the four (?) attempts in the last week right?

Would this be a pointless plan... a group cycling followed by a vehicle shadowing them (the criminals clearly don't care if witnesses are around), if they attempt their attack, occupants of the vehicle shoot them with pepper spray projectiles (eg Byrna, cos you don't want to get too close). Should be able to neutralise them and cuff them. Then call the cops to pick them up. GoPros for the evidence of their crimes and through Bike Hub/Strava we have the details of at least three victims who can lay charges. Should be an open and shut case... or am I having an uncharacteristic moment of optimism? Oh wait... why are we doing the job of the police🤬

P.S. re-reading that just made me realise we really are descending into the wild west😔

Not likely that any car was going to stop and help. We truly live in a sick and demented society.

Our Pastor in church this morning was talking about someone who found a lost wallet full of cash and cards recently, and this person went through quite a mission to find the owner. The pastor was contacted trying to find the guy who picked up the wallet and the owner was shocked that not only was his wallet returned, but that no money was taken. He said it was truly tragic that we live in a world where people are shocked by someone displaying integrity. That resonated with me.

The world today doesn't care about anyone anymore. I'm confident that even if these two chaps were assaulting the cyclist, he'd be on his own along that stretch of the N1. People are just unwilling to step outside of their comfort zones to help someone in need.

The best way to help would have been to drive straight over the scumbags... the problem is that the justice system will put you in jail for being the hero. Things are truly broken!😔

Happened AGAIN this morning.  On the N1 just before Woodstock turnoff heading back up to turn left onto paardeneiland/ marine drive. 1 guy brick and 1 guy tried to grab the riders shirt. Luckily he got away.

Do you know if there were any cars around and they are brazenly doing it with people around or if it was a quiet moment with nobody around?

I'm planning on riding from Grabouw (peregrine farm store) to home (stellenbosch) via franschhoek pass tomorrow, but I see that there is a road closure on the R321 in Vyeboom near theewaterskloof. I assume its just for repairs following the floods a few months back, and that I should be able to sneak through on a bike. Has anyone ridden this route recently and/or able to comment?

Can’t comment on the closed section, but if you are on a mtb or gravel bike you could possibly turn right into Greymead Rd (where the R321 is indicated as closed from) and come out at the bottom of the pass on the otherwise side of the dam. It crosses some private land but this is the route that was used for the trails end 4 passes challenge, so assume they’re fine with you passing through.
I don’t think you’ll have any issues riding the closed section, as you say they’re probably just mopping up after the flood damage.
Drove Franschhoek pass today, no problem to ride it.

    Feedback time -

Did my second ride with the Varia 515 today.

First ride I turned off the audible alarm after 15km.

I am happy staying left in the yellow line.  When the line ends it is most usefull to glance down and see how many vehicles, and at which distances, are following.

Next two rides were on the mountain bike, without the Varia.  Doing some 7km on tar to the trails.  WOW !!!  I was missing the Varia !

Did a longer road ride today.  The Varia is like a super rear view mirror.  It truly is a nice tool 👍

On a few tight spots I used the Varia, then waved to the driver as they were catching up.  Each time they passed wide, and waved back.

Yellow lane sections I ignore the Varia, and just enjoy the ride and the views.

The way the flash rate changes as vehicles cartch up must improve visibilty drastically 👍👍👍

The Varia was on for almost 7 hours, no low battery alarms.

Still need to check the manual to confirm if there is a way to check the Varia battery percentage

Add the My Bike Radar Traffic data field from connect IQ, adds the nearest approaching vehicle’s speed and distance, nice to have.

re: tones for approaching vehicles, the “Tri-tones” will make you want to swerve in front of a car within 10min, but I find the single tone nice to have, that way you know a car is coming before you hear the sound of it approaching otherwise it kinda defeats the point of the radar’s early warning.

  15. I wonder if one could lay a charge of reckless & negligent driving when submitted with evidence from a Varia radar with camera (video shows how close to the rider and the radar shows the vehicle’s approach speed). Is passing within 1.5m actually law or just a guideline campaign by PPA?
