  1. The other day I was browsing Facebook's marketplace and came across an add for a wheelset. The seller is in Mitchells Plain and he's selling quite a lot of bike parts (XX1 12 speed cassette, Shimano Brakes, etc). I enquired and asked whether he bought the items new. I was told that he bought it from someone 2nd hand. Now I know this game - you buy things at a bargain and sell it for a profit. But to be able to sell bike parts at a profit at these prices you have to buy it for next to nothing. Thing is, I then got suspicious, looked int he stolen bikes section and found a Giant stolen a few years back with the same wheelset. It's a relatively unique wheelset and might be a total coincidence..I asked to meet up and didn't hear a word back from the guy which was then also very weird. I also noticed the same seller selling on our Classifieds but here the wheelset was marked as sold and he explicitly told me that it's still available. We know the drill - bikes get stolen and it has become increasingly difficult to then sell said bike. It seems the new thing is to strip it for spares and sell it to a chain of people with those same parts then ending up here. There are similar sellers/adds here on our classifieds and I suspect a lot of these items must be stolen: - Lots of spelling mistakes on adds for very expensive/scarce bike parts. - Seller locations in Cape Town's dodgy neighbourhoods (for expensive bike parts this is very unusual). - Relatively new profiles that are selling a range of bike parts. A combination of the above is highly unlikely and raises questions. Question is, how the heck do we keep the classifieds free from parts that could have been stolen from its members in the first place.
  2. That makes sense. Thanks!
  3. Could you please clarify this - so (1) the CSA membership is free (you simply register). Then you can (2) purchase either an annual license (R250) or a day license (R50). It seems that for the Wines to Whales they require a CSA license..?
  4. Is the new way of applying for an annual CSA license legit? https://www.cyclingsa-events.co.za/app_v2/ Seems like a waste of money to pay R50 per day for a 3-day stage race if I can rather purchase an annual license which I will definitely use again.
  5. Has anyone come across a local XD Drive single speed conversion?
  6. Seen teenagers here with R100k Santa Cruz Bronsons so anything is possible I guess.
  7. I had to go look. R18,000 - WTH!
  8. R150k surely. Anything less than R100k and I will have to get one.
  9. If the cog spacing differs then there's no way the pull ratio between 11 and 12 speed is the same. Edit: You're contradicting yourself. You just said that your comment was clearly a joke - so given the same pull ratio, sram 11/12 speed rear derailleurs is not shifter dependent. Now you're saying that "you need "smaller" shifts for 12sp." Okay dankie baai.
  10. Sorry but was this a joke or do you really think that rear derailleurs, using the same pull ratio, is shifter dependent?
  11. Not sure what you're asking. The 11/12 speed sram shifters moves the cable with the exact same distance, yes. The derailleurs move depending on the above. If you're using a 12 speed shifter then it can move to the 12th cog on your cassette, if it's an 11 speed shifter then it can only move to the 11th cog on cassette. You can use an 11 speed shifter with a 12 speed derailleur and vice versa. The 12 speed derailleur has a longer cage to better accommodate the 50t cog at the back but you can still get an 11 speed sram rear derailleur onto the 12th cog if you use a 12 speed sram shifter for it.
  12. All I can say is *** styl.
  13. Some people are going to say you can't and that you should stick to each category. In actual fact, they have the same actuation (SRAM at least has). So yes - you can mix and match SRAM 11 and 12 speed drivetrains.
  14. Aitsa - kyk daai Envies.
  15. SALE ALERT: Clicks has Cadence products on a 3 for 2 sale. Carbo Fuel = R210 (works out to R140 a tub when you buy 3) https://clicks.co.za/cadence_carbofuel-red-berry-1000g/p/256514 Marathon = R399
  16. I'm a simple guy - I see a Niner, I like.
  17. Ahh you're right. I misread the post - thought tires were excluded. Ja fair deal then.
  18. No ways I'm wasting R2,000 on the LBS getting it done.
  19. Thanks for the feedback. Going to purchase a Mirage and try it out.
  20. Okay so just to summarise. Finance your bike. But I mean swing for the fences. Get a new Santa Cruz Tallboy 4 with the carbon and AXS bits - you really can't put a price on your health. Then also finance your burst geyser, that fancy Bosch washing machine (arguably also a psychological benefit here). While you're at it, get the new BMW 3-series - that one with the lekker vet nostrils (I'm sure it makes the car go faster by sucking in more air). But just remember the golden rule: the interest rate on your savings/investment should always be less than the rate at which you finance. Better yet - don't invest your money in any stock market - just leave it with ABSA and see how that 4% per year compounds like Norma Gigaba's testimony at the Zondo commission.
  21. Nee wag nou. Did you also finance your washing machine, fridge, bathroom upgrade, sofa, 65" TV?
  22. Anyone have longer-term opinions about the local, Vye brand? Mirage: https://vyecyclekit.cc/collections/down-low/products/mens-mirage-quad-bibshorts?variant=32102250905732 Velo: https://vyecyclekit.cc/collections/down-low/products/mens-black-velo-bibshorts
  23. Very very nice Sir.
  24. Health is complex and has many facets. If all you do is cycle then you'll be very fit but your relationship with your wife will be in tatters, you run the risk of being run over by a car, you are more like to get skin cancer at a later stage, etc. So the price of my health is measured relative to something else. The price of your health in my opinion is somewhat mutually exclusive and incurs diminishing marginal returns. Going away for a weekend or week is good for your health (if you can afford it). Going on holiday for 1 year or 5 years is arguably bad for your health.
