  1. True, started off with an entry level Avalanche for R6000 but had to upgrade to a R20000 dual suspension 29er within a year as the skill level increased but was limited by the equipment I was using. I'm very happy with my Scott 950 should ride this one for 2 years changing components as I go before upgrading, perhaps to carbon:) and will probably spend R45000 but the bike will compliment my skill level so I have no problems dropping that cash.

    It's a vicious cycle.

  2. sometimes I think the guys that spend 30 grand on bikes are a bit crazy ok I can appreciate that top end bikes are a thing of beauty and I suppose if you're going to race you probably need something fancy with all the bells and whistles etc etc but it would be wasted on a person like me ..if I had that kind of money to blow on a bike I would just get a good entry level bike for around 6000 to 8000 put the change in a fixed deposit or some kind of annual investement scheme ride the crap out of the bike and replace it every year ... and never bother servicing it come to think of it you shouldn't need to do to much to it in the space of a year if its brand new .that would be fun trying all the differant bikes for a year... addmitedly it would limit you to hardtails ..Only thing is if my wife found that I had 30 grand stashed away for spending on bikes hmmm do I see a divorce coming...

Hahahaha, thing is, no one wants to spend 30k when they start cycling, it sounds absurd. But a few years into it, 30k sounds ok.

  3. I stopped "servicing" my bikes about five years ago, now I attend to whatever needs sorting out at the time myself. Otherwise you get the vw dealer service approach, "you better replace it now, because it might just wear out tomorrow and then it is going to be much more expensive to fix".

Lets face it, you walk into a shop with your bike covered in three days of sani, tell the dude to "service it" he is going to see every part as being trashed by mud and just strip the stuff off and replace, he doesn't have the time or the gumption to clean every nook and cranny, repack bearings and stuff, its easier to replace.

They should actually wash the bike before they take it anywhere near a bike stand. But ja, why would they bother trying to revive some bearings if they can just pop in new ones and ask the premium.

  4. donkie!! what brakes do you have?

You got robbed dude.....you see, the Cape isn't the best for everything :).

    Sorry man, that's ***

Julle het die kat aan die bal beet.

Didn't do the sani, was just thinking out loud what it could cost. But it is all bike dependent. Some of those sani bikes were in very bad shape.

R500 for 2 sets of brake pads sound reasonable to me...?

  5. Shifters play a far more important role in shifting performance than DR's

    +1

They probably claim that because it is more pricey to have a higher spec'ed shifter than a higher spec'ed DR.

XT RD, 900. SLX Shifters, 700.

XT Shifters, 1100. SLX RD, 700.

Although that is 1600 vs 1800 ZAR. I suppose if you are building 1000+ bikes, R200 per bike is a lot of money.

    EDIT: listed combo's appropriately.

    +1

Or they know that a bike with XT specced RD will sell faster than a bike with xt shifters and slx RD. Looks more bling.

  6. Hi from Portugal.

I've come here as there are very few Pygas in Europe at the moment so I'm hoping there is a larger pool of knowledge here to get advice from.

I'd would like to pick some of you Pyga owners' brains and compare some of your builds.

I'm getting a large OneTen29 frame and would like to build a sub 12.5Kg bike but at the same time keep costs sensible. My plan was to go full XT drivetrain with SLX brakes, Rockshox Revelation Forks (20mm axle) and Truvativ T30 cockpit.

I'm still undecided on wheels but was thnking of ArchEX on Hope Pro II Evo hubs (or similar) or Pacenti TL28 Rims on the Hopes. I believe both the Arch and Pacenti build to around 1900g for the wheelset. Tires will either be Rocket Rons or Ikons.

Do you think with the above spec I'd be below 12.5Kg?

What specs are you guys running and what sort of weights are your bikes coming in at?

Don't have a pyga but you can shed some weight by getting a lighter cockpit, seatpost and skewers. Swap out the shimano ice tech rotors for avid HS1's and that saves close to 100 grams alone.

  7. Im also giving it a go. Im not overly impressed. Tyres are losing pressure overnight. I have had to plug holes twice during rides as the sealant couldnt seal the hole. Havent taken the tyres off yet to see if it has made snot balls from the bombs used. Bottom line for me, stick with what you know, Stans

Ja seems it's latex, water, sludge, and anything from pepper to glitter.

Would like to give it a bash, how did the cost compare? Maybe theres a nice recipe that will last longer and not stick to tires like stans.

  8. HTFU is no substitute for BFC ( be fooking clever).... The rain is not the problem but the 30-40km winds in the mountain:-) that makes 10deg feels like -10'C!

Besides I am sitting next to the fire place with some redwine!

Yeah, and I'm lying in my bed on setting 3 watching X-Art on the 62" TV.

  9. If we want respect on the roads then we have to give it on the trails. Fast downhill section, is a pedestrians responsibility to not be there or not be hit.

Most other places we should make way if possible to do so. We come from behind and a pedestrian often don't see or hear us, can't just ride your line and hope for the best.

  10. The lady was my "Owner" ie Rent a Cow....

The fall was...I have no answer something hit my backwheel up so hard that I slipped off my saddle and landed on the bars and went over... It happens when you need to graze urgently...

Hahaha, she must have kicked herself for not riding behind you.

    That was one mooorse fall.

  11. WheelerDealer are those bars available locally?

So keen to ride it but got to wait to send it next week for the shock service. The shox are not happy campers at the moment.

Yup. If they don't have stock they can order them pretty fast, Made a mistake, it's the ec70 bars.
