  1. Looking to buy a new crankset (mtb) and was thinking about a larger set of rings, 26, 36, 48 as opposed to the std 22, 32, 44. Have a 9 speed rear cluster. Any alarm bells ringing? Anyone tried this before? Thanks.
  2. I used to mix grease and oil (20w50), worked well. Changed to Hope hubs which take plain grease.
  3. Was me. Posted it here a few minutes ago, very lucky
  4. Need some advice from someone who may have been down this route. Youngster (23) in moms car jumped the red light and collected me in the intersection. No drivers license no Id. Managed to get his phone no and car reg before he took off. Not willing to give me his mothers tel no now and avoiding my calls. Happened this pm will go to police in the morning. Would like to be compensated for the damages to my bike. Someone was watching over me as he hit the bike and not my leg otherwise that was broken for sure. Frame did some damage to the oposite side knee and the helmet worked a treat otherwise a few scrapes etc. ... Very lucky. Should I need legal help what would be my next step. In all of my 51 years I have never needed a lawyer so no experience myself just some horror stories 2nd hand and 1 sided on the legal profession
  5. Compare apples with apples please, one is a Park Tool product, the other a cheap knock off. The cheap knock off may well be good enough but it's not the same thing now is it?
  6. I think if you do your sums and take into account the duties and custom clearance fees with transport charges, with some shopping around you can close the gap in that price difference to an ammount which may justify the cost of a demo saddle. Just saying.
  7. Find a bike shop that offers demo saddles that you could stick on your bike for at least a week and give it a try before you buy.
  8. Just back from the UK where I picked up a Giro Ionos, and was informed by the salesman that there would be no need to apply for a VAT refund as helmets are VAT free as they are protective wear, very 1st world. By the way the price was GBP143.00 about ZA1670.00,a hell of a lot cheaper than the local price.
  9. You might think of keeping a spread sheet for monthly usage and charges, that way you can provide a quick refrence for yourself and the council. I started when I covered my pool for winter and turned down the pool motor timer just to see if it made any difference, interesting results.
  10. Well you did ask! Did you not give any thought to Sram f/d and r/d. Better in my experience. Ritchey post and stem, why not a Ritchey h/bar? Personally I think you could do way better than the XT wheelset. But that's just me, otherwise you will have a great bike, post a pic when it's done.
  11. A few thoughts to add. All fluids break down over time and believe it or not do leak out as well as get contaminated, how? I don't know, so the fluid needs replacing. Mineral oil can be purchased in 1 Lt containers from a brake supplier to the motor trade for less than R40.00/Lt. Make your own bleed kit, mine cost R10.00 and works just as well as the Shimano kit for R1200.00. All you need is the internet for tech tips. A bike stand to hold the bike in the right posistion, reservoir higher than the caliper, helps. When you buy brakes from CRC you get the plastic spacers to keep the pads "open" when the wheel is removed, great help, try to get these from a bike shop if you can.
  12. That's odd? I run a 2.4 Conti MK on a Rockshox Revelation, fit's fine. RK 2.2 on the rear of a Trance, nice combo for me.
  13. All this from a man who once posted the following on this forum. "Stanchions are anodised for several reasons. Anodising is extremely hard (second only to diamonds)" To the layman all this techno talk can, on the surface (pun intended) appear very impressive at first glance, however the proof is in the actual using of the products. The Mavic 819 is a bullet proof rim, and no, aluminium on aluminium is not a corrosion problem. As stated by yourself on the 1st page of this thread, and I quote " 2. The nipple retaining collar is an aluminium-on-aluminium joint which is a corrosion bomb waiting to explode. These collars often just rot off. Coastal riders in particular should avoid this technology. The same goes for Ksyrium and other Mavic rims with nipples that screw into the rim." However, brass, which contains 63% copper, is a problem, copper being the alloy not to be mixed with aluminium. If aluminium-on-aluminium was a corrosion bomb then aluminium as a product would eat itself, no?
  14. Chain Reaction Cycles Hope Pro II hub, Mavic 819 UST and 1.8-2.0 mm spokes. R 2321.67 throw on a tyre, I bought Conto Race King UST, R 339.33. Add in a few bits and pieces and they pay for the freight. Collected at the post office, costs include everything. The utter rubish being spouted forth here on this forum about the Mavic 819 is not to be believed. Tubeless is the way foreward IMO and from a fellow heavy weight the 819 is bullet proof, forget the weight saving with other rims, if you want to save weight go on a diet. I have broken a lot of bike parts but this combo is solid and good value for money and the CRC custom wheel build has not let me down.
  15. I resprayed my frame. You can take it along to a panelbeater if you are not happy to do it yourself or do not have the equipment. The frame needs to be waterpapered down and decals removed, speak to a spraypainter, you can save money doing this yourself. Best to use a basecoat, waterpaper with a 2000 grit waterpaper and apply decals and then clear coat on top. If no decals spray clear straight onto base coat. Custom work needs masking and waterpapering and add colours in layers. Any spraypainter worth his salt will be able to do this. I used a spraypainter in Jo'Burg, R380.00 http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r156/war63423/Trance001.jpg
  16. Must be why so many have been bust for drugs. There is ZERO honour in professional cycling.
  17. Why should anyone wait. These guys put each other in the "gutter", use their heads to hold each other off in the end sprint, keep going when someone falls off the bike, never waited for the yellow jersey when he flatted on stage three. Now Contador must wait for Schleck? Someone please explain why this is different.

  19. Now you are talking rubbish, sorry to say. Hard chrome might be close to second only to diamonds. Not too sure what finish is used on bicycle forks but it's not anodising thats for sure, my sadle bag wears out the anodising on my seat post.
  20. Well, at least you got 10/10 on that one.
  21. Astro Anodizing in Sebenza, they have a minimum charge so I sent the bits in with some other goods. Think the min is R350.00.
  22. 13kg's fork is pretty heavy. I weigh 90 kg's so weight was never an issue rather strength and durability.
  23. Like this? https://www.bikehub.co.za/index.php?/topic/43788-how-to-upgrade-your-bike-with-cntinuous/ http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r156/war63423/TranceBuild015.jpg
  24. Previous bike was an Anthem, 2008, also a silver blue combo. Factory paint was very thin. This is a solid base paint with a few coats of clear (very hard) so should outlast the factory paint job. Cost R380 so not a big deal to redo when I replace the suspension bearings.
  25. Never found what I wanted at the bike shop so I built my own. 2009 Giant Trance X1 with a Fox RP23, 2nd hand. http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r156/war63423/TranceBuild004.jpg Send to paint shop, panel beater actually. Hit the virtual shop at CRC as well as a LBS and voila! http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r156/war63423/Trance001.jpg Cockpit http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r156/war63423/Trance003.jpg Anodized the suspension linkages to match the Hope hubs, a bit bling, may go for black next time round. http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r156/war63423/Trance002.jpg Hope Pro 2 hubs with Mavic 819 rims and Conti mountain/ race kings, tubeless. Rocshox Revelation Team U Turn 120mm - 150mm with remote poplock. XT Crankset and BB Sram X9 F/ R/D and XO Gripshifters. XT brakeset and rotors. Ritchey H/Bars and stem with Hope headset. Fizik Gobi. 1st test ride this AM.
