  1. Any one having some logs lying around which can be turned, pun intended, into something beautiful and useful like bowls, candle holders or pepper grinders?
  2. 4. Wag ń bietjie natural edged bowls.
  5. Soetdoring, Accacia karoo, also finished using shellac based friction polish.
  6. Rhodesian teak mortar and tamboti pestle set. Finished using French polish friction technique.
  7. A different angle.
  8. Not a lot of turners on the hub? May I post some of my work? These are a siamese set of bluegum natural edged bowls. They came from the same piece of trunk. (Bottom to bottom.) The pith of the trunk was very much off centred and is actually in the smaller of the two bowls!
  9. All of the best Bonus. Live your dream! We would like to visit some time.
  10. Unless he has been clipped by a car or motorbike before he came in to view, the amount of cars had nothing to do with his accident. The car he crashed into did nothing wrong, it followed a predictable line and speed through the corner. If you look care fully Matt came in to the corner already out of control. It was an absolute horrific accident and I hope he will make a full recovery. Pro cycling certainly aint for the faint of heart!
  11. There is also the gravel road option between Clarens and Fouriesburg. It goes down towards the Caledon river, and for a while you are quite close to the river with Lesotho a mere stone throw away. You will pass by the spot where the delivery tunnel of the Lesotho highlands water scheme crosses the border on its way to the Ash river outfall. From there it is tarred, but very quiet, back to the R711 between Clarens and Fouriesburg. Patchelicious, I am afraid a long weekend is going to be to short!
  12. For some hardcore mountain biking visit Camelroc just before the Caledonspoort border post. The 30 km trail is technical in parts, and the climb to the top is very tough, but it is a rewarding experience. Camelroc guest farm is about 40 km from Clarens. WRT road cycling the R712 from Clarens to Harrismith offers a good climb and is very scenic.
  13. IMHO this is the best advise. I tried all kinds of stuff, from herbs to chewing gum etc. But at last I wanted it bad enough to go cold turkey. During those first few days I had some very dark roasted coffee beans (almost charcoal) which I carried around every where I went on the farm. Whenever I felt like lighting up I would chew a few of the beans. The almost smoky taste of the beans, and perhaps the caffeine helped me to get over it.
  14. I will never forget the date I smoked my last cigarette. It was a sunday; 9/09/2001. Two days before 9/11. I stopped smoking on my mother's birthday, she had already passed away a few years earlier. I sort of did it as a tribute to her and also a kind of remembrance. She always begged and pleaded with my dad to stop smoking, but sadly she passed away before he could stop. He eventually managed to kick the habit a few years later, but 50 odd years of the filthy habit had already taken its toll, and his last few years was spent in the terrible grasp of emphysema where every breath seemed to be a struggle for life and death. I always think back to stopping smoking in terms of 3's. The first 3 days are absolute hell, if you can get past it, it becomes slightly easier. The first 3 weeks are tough, but if you manage that, you are more than 50% towards your goal of becoming an ex smoker. After 3 months almost all the cravings should be over, and after 3 years it should be safe to say that you will never ever smoke again!
  15. Thanks guys! Much appreciated. Can't wait for my holiday to start and to escape the drought that has hit our part of the Freestate, even if it is only for a couple of weeks.
  16. Will someone like me who never learned to do big gap jumps and tabletops be able to enjoy Garden Route Trail Park? I don't mind rock gardens or smallish drop offs, but never learned to jump properly. What other trails in the Garden Route area is a must do? I will be holidaying in Plett for about 11 days in February. What are the trails like this time of year? Very muddy and wet?
  17. How about home made macadamia nut butter? http://thecoconutmama.com/2012/12/homemade-macadamia-nut-butter/ I don't add the honey though. Warning! This stuff is addictive, thats why I stopped making it.
  18. Peanut butter is not a healthy choice, whether you are doing LCHF, paleo or even normal high carb diet. You can do a search on this thread, it has been covered already, or you can do a google search: "what is wrong with peanut butter" My biggest concern regarding peanut butter is its high content of the Omega 6 fatty acid; linoleic acid. It is a struggle these days to eat the correct ratio of omega 3 to omega 6 fatty acids, because of our westernized diet which contain a lot of seed and grain oils high in omega 6. Avoiding grain and seed oils will go a long way towards improving your health.
  19. Ridgebacks has got tremendous stamina and a good tolerance for the African heat. Their forefathers, the Hottentot hunting dog, is the only indigenous Southern African dog. I try to take my current Ridgeback, Katy, and the Jack Russell, Rafiki, on a run on the farm at least twice a week. Me on the mountain bike, doing a chilled ride through the fields and paddocks inspecting the crop and livestock and them frolicking and chasing guinea-fowl, rabbits, meerkat and the like. They often do runs of 25 km or even more as long as we pass by some open water where they can have a swim and a drink.
  20. What a beautiful Rhodesian Ridgeback Kahlua is! They are just the cleanest, healthiest and most loyal breed to keep in SA. Show me another dog with so much expression in their face. I have had 5 Ridgebacks in my time and will be a Ridgeback fan forever!
  21. Might be muscle mass loss?
  22. I am confused. Can't remember a single meter of technical riding on the whole transbaviaans route? It is all open gravel road or at the worst jeep track.
  23. The first international LCHF health summit to be held in Cape Town in February: https://www.facebook.com/events/880528391966336/?ref=22 Should be a good one, lots of international experts attending: Dr Eric Westman, Dr Jay Wortman, Dr Stephen Phinney, Christine Cronau, Dr Ann Childers, Dr Gary Fettke, Prof Tim Noakes, Dr Andreas Eenfeldt, Jimmy Moore, Dr Aseem Malhotra and Judy Crane. Any hubbers going?
  24. Blitzbokke you beauties! What a final! What a tournament! What a bunch of team players! Nice to be a Saffa tonight sevens champs as well as miss world!
  25. Hi Dean. Sorry only saw this now. The days have been long putting in the new crop. We have had some good rain since early November, but nothing spectacular. (About 110 mm in total) We are struggling after 2 years of well below average rainfall. (The 2012/2013 season has been the driest in 100 years) Really hoping for some good rain so that the vleie and spruite can have a good run and fill up our dams and the groundwater reserves. My dogs, Rafiki the Jack Russel, Bonnie the Labrador, and Katie aka Catherine the Rhodesian Ridgeback, also goes ballistic when they hear the sound of the velcro on my mtb shoes or the squeal of my running shoes on the kitchen floor. (We got Katie on the day William and Catherine got married, hence the name. ) When I want to do some serious training I have to leave them at home, so I need to sneak out of the front door long before dawn without waking them up. Katie and Rafiki have very good stamina, but Bonnie tires very quickly. Normally I would return home after about an hour and a bit of hard riding and then call them along for half an hour which provides me with a very decent and long cool down period, and them with some enjoyment of frolicking through the veldt.
