  1. Thank you IceCreamMan. The support for this race just blows my mind. Not just the 200 000+ supporters on the route but everyone at home watching it on TV as well. I will never forget when I was little and we used to watch Comrades the whole day (when it was still on the 16th of June), and I thought to myself that there are crazy people in our country, why would you run so far? Now I am one of the crazies... I am not from a running family, I didn't grow up running or having Comrades as a dream. I am the first family member to have done the Comrades. Still trying to convince my younger brother to run Comrades with me...
  2. It is finally Comrades week!! I am feeling calm at the moment. All the official club Comrades get-togethers are all done: Comrades Braai, Last club run, Comrades Church service. It is only the pasta evening this week. No running for me this week until Saturday morning. (Still got some sniffles and I am feeling very paranoid at the moment...) I read somewhere (I think it was Runner's World) that when you hit the wall or starts suffering in a race, you must think of one specific moment in your training where you suffered and persevered. It will help you to motivate yourself. The moment I will be thinking about on Sunday when I probably go up Inchanga is the RAC 60km long run. It wasn't a race but I felt like giving up at 30km and I pushed thru and finished the long run. What will be your HTFU training memory on Sunday?
  3. Almost the same experience for me. Ran a 8 km club run. Today is my last day of antibiotics and my heart rate was thru the roof. [emoji22] I am feeling nervous now. I guess lots of sleep and rest are in order for the next week. Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk
  4. Stop posting these sort of tips You guys are not helping... I am seriously considering getting a new watch after Comrades. My Forerunner 620 is not compatible with Connect IQ and the battery only lasts 10 hours. So I guess I will have to set a time goal for myself for Comrades (which I haven't done as yet) and if I reach the goal I can reward myself with a new watch (Yes, this is how I justify buying a new watch )
  5. I will never forget my previous up run, which was my first up run. I thought I am all done climbing when I got to the top of Polly's... I got a nasty surprise as there are some "bumps" in the last 8kms.
  6. A definite NO!! I posted an article of Graham explaining the route, especially the 5 major climbs. If you read that you are well enough prepared.
  7. Event Name: 2017 Bestmed Satellite Road Championship When: 14 October 2017 Where: Saloon Route 66, North West Category: Road Early bird entries close at midnight on Friday 26 May 2017. (15% discount) Go to Event Page
  8. Stretch you need to start running slower so that you can pay attention to where you run Do your run with a headlight?
  9. Yay, just in time for TdF!! and Roland Garros and Wimbledon.
  10. Thanks, maybe just keep an eye on it. If you are not feeling better tomorrow, then I would suggest taking it. That will give you enough time before the 4th.
  11. I went to the doctor this morning, got a b12 shot and some antibiotics. Working from home the next couple of days to stay away from sick people. So no running for me this week, and probably only the 4km trot the day before Comrades for next week. Feeling very frustrated, but I have no other choice. Happy tapering everyone, stay out of the cold, not worth getting sick now.
  12. They don't post anything. You print your race confirmation that you received in an email with all the details. It is best to pick up your race pack at Durban as the PMB expo is very small, and not much going on. Picking up your race number and goodie bag goes very quickly, they are very efficient. The expo is massive, I suggest you go on Friday as there are lots of walking and you want to rest the legs on Saturday. (Try and leave the credit card at home )
  13. That just sucks... I feel sad for her, I wanted her to win this year after last year's second place. I also suspected something was wrong when I heard that she hasn't been running since OMTOM. She must be heart broken, I hope she has a good wine collection.
  14. I'm in the same boat. Woke up this morning with a fever and a sore throat. Don't know if I should phone the Doctor today or try and medicate it myself... Very frustrating as I doubled my vitamin intake last week. I guess running in the cold weather is a bad idea.
  15. Let us know how the new finish is, I don't know what to expect. TRUST in your training! You have done the work, I agree with Tubehunter We all go thru 10 different emotions on a daily basis regarding training at this point before Comrades (I go thru it as well). Have I done enough? Is that a pain in my calve muscle I feel? Am I getting sick, I just sneezed! I am struggling on a 10km, will I be able to run 87km? The only thing you should focus on now is getting enough sleep, staying healthy and just to keep the legs moving at a slower pace than normal. Like I said, trust in your training, you have done the hard work. It looks like a much better weekend, weather wise in Gauteng. Looking forward to a 15km run up Hill Snacks tomorrow and then our club's 10km bus run (which is a two-hour walk ) on Sunday. I will do another 5km afterward. My last run is on Wednesday night.... but I will probably run the weekend before Comrades. I just can't sit still...
  16. I feel the same. Didn't run the weekend and I ran last night at a very slow pace. It felt like I finished a marathon the previous day! Legs feel like bricks and calf muscles feel very stiff. Can the 4th of June just come now, please??
  17. Maybe your company is blocking Facebook. Here is an image: (written by Graham Block)

All novices should read this: https://m.facebook.com/search/top/?q=%23thebigfive&ref=content_filter&tsid=0.3711295575348943&source=typeahead#!/story.php?story_fbid=1923708677842596&id=100006104470292&refid=8&ref=content_filter&__xt__=12.%7B%22unit_id_click_type%22%3A%22graph_search_results_item_tapped%22%2C%22click_type%22%3A%22result%22%2C%22module_id%22%3A65%2C%22result_id%22%3A%22100006104470292%3A10158504934515386%22%2C%22sid%22%3A%221111123542%22%2C%22module_role%22%3A%22FEED_GROUP_POSTS%22%2C%22unit_id%22%3A%22browse_rl%3A6481cc325481e87192089131d98e76ec%3Ac1%22%2C%22browse_result_type%22%3A%22browse_type_story%22%2C%22unit_id_result_id%22%3A10158504934515386%2C%22module_result_position%22%3A1%2C%22result_creation_time%22%3A1493949012%7D&__tn__=%2As Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk
  19. There is a km countdown. In the second half, you get very excited when you see the white and red boards! Counting kms, working out pace etc is really impossible in the last 15km or so.
  20. Personally, I don't like busses and they stress me out. If you can catch one for the last 10km or so then use them. A 12-hour bus is just too close for comfort to use. I have seen it many times that bus drivers do a sprint finish and the bus falls apart. ( I know Buks is a good bus driver and he probably won't do it)
  21. If she is just going for a finish I would think the second half is more important to time. My first Comrades my watch also died with 8kms to go. The sun started to set and I had no idea what my time is, I asked one or two fellow runners, one was to buggered to answer me... I finished under 11 hours. It is very stressful to run without a watch so close to the finish.
  22. A while back I looked at pricing for overseas marathons. The entry fee for Geneva is R800. Which I thought is not bad at all, if you compare it to London or Boston. Obviously, the accommodation will be very expensive in Switzerland. (R1800 for two people per night)
  23. I luckily caught the Cart Blanche segment about her race. She is amazing. Imagine running a 2:05 half marathon a the age of 85!! It looked like a beautiful race to run, will add it to my todo list. I also hope she can find a sponsor, she got very excited at the end when Derick asked her if she wants to do another overseas race.
