  1. I'll give it a try in 2021 then.
  2. You're looking at 1100m, used be 1600m back in the day. Very little single track.
  3. True, as with swimming... but on a bike... in sand... You know the more I think about it the more I liked it. My first was the 42k in 2011 and the year after that it was the 60k and then some 75k ones. Always enjoyed it - each and everyone. This 50K was so different, hard to describe it, it was quicker yet still a challenge. Have to say, whatever next year delivers, it sure would be interesting.
  4. That will definitely help. On a hard tail I bounce on the seat with each pedal stroke to increase traction while keeping the rest of my body as low as possible to lower center of gravity. You then get this feeling like you are swimming through the sand. I love it.
  5. Also entered now. I see the 60km route on their site included the Orange loop? There is also a section that is no longer ridable. This is the router from last year, so I am not sure how the actual 60km route will look... Hope we can get clarity on this.
  6. I feel like a bit of a tĂȘt kop. When I arrived there before the race I rode over the foot bridge along with a few other guys. Afterwards I headed back their and the security told me I had to go around the car park. Having explained to him that I have to ride to Stellenbosch and I am not going via Anandale rode he said "No, you just go via the car park". Still not understanding him I replied that it is much further. He then replied and said it's only a few meters up to the vehicle bridge. Then the penny dropped - I remember that bridge from when I was a kid. Felt like such an idiot and apologized and thanked him for the directions. If only he said vehicle bridge at the start I would have not wasted so much time.
  7. I had a slow day (hung over) and the 16km warm up ride to the race did not help. 2:45 is good enough I guess. My dad (nearing 70) had a 2km warm up ride and managed 4:33. On Friday I spoke with Meurant about this change and it was simple maths, he took the most profitable route from before, the 50km, and tried to host it without disrupting too much of Stellenbosch and without incurring unnecessary cost. In my books this was a great success. Who knows, maybe next year we can have it at Spier again and they can work out a more technical route that includes Eden, Mont Marie, maybe G-spot? But keeping it out of town is a good thing for all.
  8. Loved it, riding all those farm trails I rode as a kid, it was amazing. The sand was awesome, so few people seem to be able to ride sand. Hint, you need the right pedals. If they can find a way to reach Eden and the Mont Marie trails and add a more technical route I can see Spier become the new home of the Stellenbosch MTB challenge.
  9. Lekker riding on our family farm amongst others. Sent from my CUBOT_X18_Plus using Tapatalk
  10. It is but the direction changed, you do the boring field stuff on the other side of the road firsts. Then head up to the trails but it does not go high up the mountain, like it did back in the good old days.
  11. Sorry, misunderstood you, I thought you wanted to know what is was like in 2015.
  12. Awesome! https://www.strava.com/activities/385318013
  13. As per https://za.mapometer.com/mountain_biking/route_4750258 it seems you start and head across the Simondium road to ride around those fields, and in the end you do have a little bit of climbing, same as last year. Well sadly I'll stand by what I said last year. Unless the 2015 route is resurrected I am not riding Backsberg again.
  14. Is the 45km the same route as in 2015 or is it going to be like last years route?
  15. This one is always a killer
  16. Would have loved to do this, but K2C...
  17. Depends on the organiser at the time. First Origin we got nothing, not even discount. 3rd on my buddy got 2 free entries. The 50km as made use of our farm form the past 3 years but even if offered we would not take discount or free entries as we are appreciate the work Dirtopia and their team does all year round to provide people with some of the best trails around. Sunday will be a lot of fun, weather will be cool but not wet. It's gonna be a good one!
  18. Nice, but why are so many folks in France right now? Quite a few of the folks I follow on Strava seem to ride there at the moment.
  19. Lekker bit of roadie riding on my new 1x9 setup, much improved over the 1x8.
