  1. Girls only like you more if your bike is actually dirty - proof that it has been ridden.
  2. Reminds me of the guys who asked me over the weekend how I managed to stay so clean in the Greytown race - mudguards actually have a purpose?!
  3. Noise from BB is one of the most common complaints. Could be just about anything as your brain tells you the sound is coming from where you are exerting pressure (crank/pedal/BB area). Could be a multitude of things: - Loose headset or worn headset bearings - Pedal bearings or even the cleat contact point - BB bearings - Seatpost/saddle/seatube interfaces (check to see when standing if noise is there) etc
  4. Because it is cycling related.
  5. Front deraileurs are about the limit screws and positioning of the deraileur and crankset (spacers can mess up your front shifting). Rear deraileurs are about the shifter predominantly. However, using a SRAM shifter with a Campag or Shimano RD will cause problems because the actuation ratios are totally different. Mixing Shimano and Campag is less of an issue as the only difference really is the slight difference in distance the derailleur is shifted by the shifter. Mixing 8/9/10 speed seems to work in most combinations, but not all. It may be something to do with the maximum travel for the derailleur, so an 8 speed derailleur may not be able to move the full distance required to shift through 10 speeds, but by and large if you can fit the cassette on the same width freewheel body then you should be okay with a little tweaking.
  6. ADT security guy attacks woman - now in jail. Easy. ADT are generally on my pet-hate list. We have their "LSS" service in our area (local patrolling) and they stick newsletters every month into our postbox. For the past year, they have reported that 1 or 2 incidents occured in our area, whereas I get an SMS from the police on numerous occasions every week informing me of reported incidents in the general area. Most aren't within the patrolling zone but some definitely are, so either ADT are misinformed or they are liars. As the SMS service was started by the Community Police Forum (where they are members), you would have to assume that they are the latter.
  7. You can ride on the IDT without even moving your upper body, so the strain on your ribs is unlikely to be any more than you would experience just breathing sitting on your butt. My doc was very certain I could get on the IDT as soon as I felt up to breathing heavily. Then again he rode 6 days of the Epic with his cracked ribcage tightly strapped to reduce the pain after a heavy fall.
  8. Anything with the absence of absolute proof requires supposition and an acceptance of things that cannot be explained. So I get what you are saying, I'm just saying that its garbage.
  9. All due respect, but your 'logical reasoning' is fatally flawed. There is plenty of evidence to explain the origin of life on earth and the earth itself. To simply claim that a god created it all in six days, simply because some book / fable tells you so is illogical and unscientific. Again I note that you have not provided any evidence of a god's existence. Plenty of theories, yes. None of them are conclusive. I cannot provide evidence of God's existence, just as you cannot provide evidence of how we came to be. That wasn't the point of the discussion though. The issue was really that ChrisH and yourself imply that rational thought and religion are mutually exclusive, which I have pointed out is ridiculous. Simply because you choose to accept other theories on man's existence or even that popular opinion leans a certain way does not make your theory right or other's ridiculous. linnega2008-05-11 03:30:09
  10. I would have to agree with you on the concept of infinity. It is not possible for us to grasp infinity and I would guess that the combined intellect of all humans on this planet could not truly explain infinity. Linking the infinity to the existence of God in the way though is very simplistic, no more simplistic than the Christian belief that God is infinite in which case he needs not have a creator nor an end. How that is possible cannot be explained as we don't have an understanding of God nor of infinity. Convenient, I know, but that really does leave us with no resolution to the debate.
  11. Ribs depend also on tissue damage. Damage to the tissue can take a long time to heal around your ribs because you stretch the tissue every time you breath, sneeze, cough or laugh. Took me three weeks to be riding 160km on the road after I cracked my ribs, although my first ride back was the Jock route. I was up on the indoor trainer within 5 days though - sitting upright and not moving my upper body. My tissue damage was pretty bad though and I couldn't sleep on my left side for about 8 weeks after the crash. Didn't stop me from riding the Etape, and I don't imagine it would stop you from riding the Freedom Challenge. I imagine you will be a little uncomfortable.
  12. That would be an incorrect understanding. What I am saying is that you have faith as much as the next person in the intellectual sense unless you know everything - which I am assuming is not the case. You can believe or disbelieve what you like but saying that Christian's have no reason or are ignorant because they have faith is hypocritical.
  13. Seems I shouldn't do any work and just read posts so I can keep up. Pantani apologies for not getting your point of view before hiding the comment posted. Had you done a little explaining like the first post on this thread, I wouldn't have done anything. Next time I will check with the poster what was meant by their comment (particular the regulars that we are familiar with) if I have time or leave it until I do have the time or one of the other moderators has time.
  14. For R5k I would say it is a good buy. For more than that, it is a pretty old design. I've only ridden one for one day - day 3 of Sani2C - but the bike rides well, climbs nicely and is reasonably light. A good alround bike that you can use for just about anything short of crazy freeriding and more crazy downhills
  15. Yes. Don't let the Aussies tell you otherwise. you're right, linnega. only it's worse! one bite out of a sandwich and I guarantee you'll send it back! only if you've been force fed it as a child can you appreciate it now! PB, go easy on the tim-tams, they are lethal. ps. will keep you informed on the accident yesterday... It is the same around the world. No one in their right mind would choose bitter tasting spreads like Marmite, Bovril or Vegemite. But anyone that has got used to the taste as a kid will swear that their choice is unique and tastes better than the others. That "accident" seemed like no accident?! Had four or five of those incidents personally during commutes. The only time I actually made contact with the car, I stayed upright and the guys mirror cracked. I didn't hear if the cyclists got the plate numbers of the grey sedan. Surely there are enough witnesses to press charges of reckless driving and assault with a deadly weapon?
  16. Yes. Don't let the Aussies tell you otherwise.

Even simpler reasoning is you pay a premium to receive a certain payout - if R10,000 insurance costs R50 then when you have a valid claim you should be paid out R10,000. Insurance companies make their lives unecessarily complicated with all this crap about replacement values and equivalent market values. Short term insurance should be simple.
  19. I am asthmatic and use Salbutamol periodically. Can't say I ever noticed a benefit. I never bother getting a TUE although technically I should. A couple puffs from an inahaler before a race does not contain much Salbutamol and doesn't appear to give me any benefit (other than preventing Asthma attacks brought on by pollen and other irritants especially in Winter and early Spring).
  20. Lets not get silly with the semantics. Doping is when you violate the anti-doping laws. Pettachi was over the limit therefore is guilty of doping. Whether he intended or actually enhanced his performance is irrelevant, otherwise all those that rehydrate would be guilty of doping.
  21. Umm...he was found guilty of doping by CAS and suspended for one year. He has also been disqualified from the 2007 Giro and all races between 1 November and the court ruling.
