  1. no one replied! you are in the low end and your first bike so if you got it wrong it won't be a 'costly mistake' they will all probably have low end components so it doesn't matter. My road bike has entry level Sora groupset and it is 8yrs old and no problems. The tiagra on my brothers bike, same age went through 2 derailers already. take the 29er which is the lightest. once the bug bit you will be looking to upgrade soon
  2. My 3yr old got a WE bike we bought at Sportmans Warehouse. he is turning 4yrs next month and i'm struggling to find a small bike with pedals. he is not the biggest of fellows and a lot of the small bikes is a bit too big for him. needless to say, the shop can keep the training wheels
  3. it depends what you recovering from? my knee injury required a slow nurturing process and after 6 months I'm really only starting to pick up speed and climb better. normally, if I'm out for 1 or 2 weeks, a nice long ride normally gives my system a shock and the next ride i'm back on 'form'. however, I ride 4-5 times per week. once I was off the bike for a month and it took as much time to get back to where I was the month before. then you get okes who never cycled or trained for a long time and get on the bike/court and ride/play like they were training whole week, the p me off!
  4. and i was gearing up for my first stage event, very dissappointed now
  5. oak valley cottages - grabouw. you on the Lebannon trails and also not too far from Thandi (paul cluver) and Oak Valley trails
  6. It is a pity, because it did attract internation pros to the country if I look who raced in those races before.
  7. I'm sure this was covered, but why was this stage event stopped. it was 4 stages leading up to the Argus Cycle Tour. any chance of it coming back?
  8. That is why I'm starting to enjoy Strava, I win everytime I beat a my own PR! oh and don't forget to enjoy the scenery. I'm looking forward to the lagoon challenge, very beautiful scenery, don't lose those moments of sheer beauty!
  9. I did a sub 3;30 argus (jaa jaa, I'm slow) weighing 66kg, and when I looked at the actionphoto.net pics of me, alot of okes around me in the snap shots would be considered big/overweight/big boned (take your pic) and alot of them passed me up chappies and suikerbossie. they are damn strong carrying all that weight and 'spare tyres'. So I like the idea of weight categories . Strava you can see how you compare with others in your weight category, pick a few okes and use them as bench marks
  10. more than 20 years ago, I was pulled off the M5 by traffic cops with my 50cc, they didn't fine me but immediately told me to take the first exit off because motorbikes under 50cc (now 125cc) not allowed on freeways. So back then they considered it a freeway, hence bicycles not allowed. It would be great if they can make the M5 Northbound in morning peak and Southbound in afternoon peak open to cyclist. very much like the bus lane rules
  11. the only thing I see wrong is that the photo is under exposed I don't ride the M5 in the morning and take lower Main Rd, I agree the M5 broad yellow lane is probably safer in peak traffic because you have to be very cautious on lower main rd into town, gets scary at times. eish, can we please have cycling lanes! trust me I know alot of people that will cycle to work if there were cycling lanes. don't blame the folks.
  12. I got a R500 smack for number plate not visible. could have been double cos the cops said my rear lights were also obscured but he let me go on that. I bought a trailer board fitted with lights, plugs etc at Suburban Spares for R150. I attach it to the last bike and Bob's your uncle. bought it 3 years ago as a short term solution until I can afford the integrated lights thule rack, never got around to it cos it works perfectly. Cheaper than the thule light rack and cheaper than a fine
  13. i'm sure drafting a truck at speed must be fun, ive never done it, not planning to either. if you wish to call upon grim reaper, do it without putting others at risk. if the oke had to get it wrong others were put at risk, and would not like to be in a car that rides over a cyclist, one has to live with that forever.
  14. Agree, but chances are if that trucks brakes and he crashes into it, then we could knock him as well or we could end up taking out other cars and ourselves. So it endangers everyone. At one time the speedometer on the car was 64km/h
  15. btw, I was in the passenger seat whilst taking the pics
  16. take the bike out of the box, put it together, add all the components, put it on the scale and then list details with weight included. so simple. but I definitely think they try to nail the sale with how the bike looks and the group set on it I don't care what the manufacturers say, I wanna know its weight on the shop floor, cos that is what I'm walking out with and ultimately paying for. I think I am beyond a beginner, for most I can knock off 2kg and be 66kg. My current bike is considered heavy so if I can knock off 2kg on my next bike purchase that will be a combine 4kg weight saving (throw in the light bottle cage then hell, i'm super light LOL). Now surely 4kg is a significant weight saving on the Grape Escape I intend doing next year. Thanks for replies folks!
  17. I think most would agree, that the weight of the bike is a serious consideration when looking to purchase a bike. Now why is that most websites and even in stores do they seldom give the weight of the bike. They will have details from what shocks, groupset, rims, stem, going on and on, but neglect to give the weight. This bike with these components (as advertised) is R10k, it weighs 14kg, that simple for example. Then many salespeople can never give you an accurate answer when ask, put the bloody thing on the scale , end of story. or is that the weight of bikes will put people off altogether? but then I don't have a degree in advertising/marketing as well.
  18. with the car I used G clamps to push the pistons back when replacing pads and then top up the brake fluid level after some spilt out. do you do the same with the bike, guess not.
  19. 15 years old, winning every race. well done! if you winning on 26er, then why change? as with any sport, as you get better, you want and probably deserve better equipment. (unlike me who wants a 29inch carbon bike but don't deserve it, okay I can't afford it too, but there are 100 things I can do to make me faster before embarking on equipment upgrades) Like the okes said, depends on the terrain and your size. I also agree on improving the technical skills, training hard etc. try to ride as many bikes as possible and then make your choice, that's the safest option. well done on your achievements and best wishes! There are many of us that never won a race and probably never will and we will be unable to turn back the clock and be 15, so enjoy it!
  20. lovely stuff, now the times will come down, mainly due to sheer looks
  21. I've got a dual sus, tubeless tyres, shock pump and everything else you need for MTB and W2W. but Nobe1986, you are 200% better off than me with your V-brakes cheapo Why? Cos you doing the W2W and I'm not! so go for it! I envy you already
  22. I have an old 2005 entry level Scott, it still whips around the argus route under 3h30. rather use my cash an upgrade the MTB. Will probably still have the same Scott in 20 years time, just for the Argus. Remember: "It is not about the bike"
  23. +1 Last year I did the argus just for fun, came in just over 4 hours, enjoyed it a lot, chatting, stopping at the drink stations, taking a pi$$ etc. slap on the free slicks from the generous hubber and take it from there.
  24. i wanna go to court on 30th, anyone know the time. I'm in town but can't sit their wholeday waiting,
