  1. im not a gun oke, and I don't have an issue with cyclist wanting to carry a gun etc. hell I'm also gatvol of being scared whilst cycling alone. I enjoy cycling on my own, my time. apart from when I was a youngster, when you thought guns were cool I never wanna own one. I have been considering getting a gun just so that I can enjoy my cycling. However, I'm still not convinced that because I have to conceal it, at the same time it will not be a quick draw. furthermore, you still have to cock it, take safety off (gun depending though), I might just come off second best, but hell am I considering
  2. I had trouble finding a pedal bike for my 3yr old cause he is on the 'smallish' side and his balancing bike he mastered. The bike shops were actually useless. Actually ended up getting a bike at PnP for R400, he loves it. Soon I will buy him the 16inch Titan, his brother is 2 turning 3, and the 3rd boy is due in March, so hand me down opportunities make any investment worthwhile. I must say the LBS don't have a great range and the Game/Makro is Game/Makro. I found fixed cogs, back pedal brakes, bikes with only rear or front brakes. I just wanted a bike that will operate like all his future bikes and PnP surprisingly saved the day. He didn't need the sidewheels and is now getting the hang of front brakes, hands can barely reach though. all I need now is all these people to keep their dogs on leashes so that I don't freak out everytime. 'yes they do bite, and maul children, can't take chances' enough examples. just needed to get this off my chest.

  4. Good to hear some Raves! mooi gedoen CWC
  5. RIP, always sad to hear this. Deepest sympathy goes out to friends and family
  6. I was up at Tokai this weekend, and i have to still get used to the tree felling that has happening and still to happen. I can see the trail builders making progress, so well done. I also think the annual permit is getting too high. I regard silvermine as part of Tokai and don't see the cape point reserve as a MTB venue. So, essentially your Tokai annual permit don't buy you much options on national parks land. If I look at the tygerberg mountain bike club annual membership fees and all the trail offerings then Tokai is steep. Oak Valley, Paul Cluver are all stunning trails as well and their day permits are cheaper. I live around the corner of Tokai and ride it frequently to justify an annual permit (which I have to renew) but I think they must slow down on the hiking of prices.
  7. I'm not sure how far they got but Land Rover was on a similar buzz here in South Africa where all workshops with Land Rover/landy/rover etc were also infringing in name rights. most of these workshops are independant and are by far better looking after Land Rovers than what Land Rover SA is capable of. These 'indies' actually keeps the Land Rover brand alive otherwise most of them would be parked at agents who themselves don't know how to fix these delicate vehicles.
  8. had an issue at Lagoon race where the chip probably didnt register on the start mat and i got credited with starting with the last group giving me a very slow time. one email and attached endomondo link and they sorted within 2 working days. on another occassion in a 32km Mtb challenge, no end result on the timing mat. sent them an email, they asked me my estimated time I finished, I think they looked at video/photo footage and bob's your uncle. (had no GPS tracking) I always try to hear the beep but sometimes you cross with others and other times i'm too vrek moeg to hear anything
  9. if i don't have space to ride a meter away from parked cars, i go very slooooooooowly (less then 18km/h), especially Albert Rd in the afternoons, Woodstock and Salt River. Doors open up all the time. my fear is not much the crash from being hit by a flinging door, I fear more being thrown in the path of traffic and then get run over.
  10. this morning I came flying down suikerbossie in the direction of camps bay, took a bend and almost hit barriers put in the yellow line, luckily the cars were held their mandatory 1m distance so I could clear it with no drama. coming into camps bay I also got a lekker skrik to part of the road washed away in last week's heavy rain, that was also too close for comfort. but on the other hand i'm perfectly ok bombing down a ST I never done before, but then one is more alert, so stay frosty
  11. no one replied! you are in the low end and your first bike so if you got it wrong it won't be a 'costly mistake' they will all probably have low end components so it doesn't matter. My road bike has entry level Sora groupset and it is 8yrs old and no problems. The tiagra on my brothers bike, same age went through 2 derailers already. take the 29er which is the lightest. once the bug bit you will be looking to upgrade soon
  12. My 3yr old got a WE bike we bought at Sportmans Warehouse. he is turning 4yrs next month and i'm struggling to find a small bike with pedals. he is not the biggest of fellows and a lot of the small bikes is a bit too big for him. needless to say, the shop can keep the training wheels
  13. it depends what you recovering from? my knee injury required a slow nurturing process and after 6 months I'm really only starting to pick up speed and climb better. normally, if I'm out for 1 or 2 weeks, a nice long ride normally gives my system a shock and the next ride i'm back on 'form'. however, I ride 4-5 times per week. once I was off the bike for a month and it took as much time to get back to where I was the month before. then you get okes who never cycled or trained for a long time and get on the bike/court and ride/play like they were training whole week, the p me off!
  14. and i was gearing up for my first stage event, very dissappointed now
  15. oak valley cottages - grabouw. you on the Lebannon trails and also not too far from Thandi (paul cluver) and Oak Valley trails
  16. It is a pity, because it did attract internation pros to the country if I look who raced in those races before.
  17. I'm sure this was covered, but why was this stage event stopped. it was 4 stages leading up to the Argus Cycle Tour. any chance of it coming back?
  18. That is why I'm starting to enjoy Strava, I win everytime I beat a my own PR! oh and don't forget to enjoy the scenery. I'm looking forward to the lagoon challenge, very beautiful scenery, don't lose those moments of sheer beauty!
  19. I did a sub 3;30 argus (jaa jaa, I'm slow) weighing 66kg, and when I looked at the actionphoto.net pics of me, alot of okes around me in the snap shots would be considered big/overweight/big boned (take your pic) and alot of them passed me up chappies and suikerbossie. they are damn strong carrying all that weight and 'spare tyres'. So I like the idea of weight categories . Strava you can see how you compare with others in your weight category, pick a few okes and use them as bench marks
  20. more than 20 years ago, I was pulled off the M5 by traffic cops with my 50cc, they didn't fine me but immediately told me to take the first exit off because motorbikes under 50cc (now 125cc) not allowed on freeways. So back then they considered it a freeway, hence bicycles not allowed. It would be great if they can make the M5 Northbound in morning peak and Southbound in afternoon peak open to cyclist. very much like the bus lane rules
  21. the only thing I see wrong is that the photo is under exposed I don't ride the M5 in the morning and take lower Main Rd, I agree the M5 broad yellow lane is probably safer in peak traffic because you have to be very cautious on lower main rd into town, gets scary at times. eish, can we please have cycling lanes! trust me I know alot of people that will cycle to work if there were cycling lanes. don't blame the folks.
  22. I got a R500 smack for number plate not visible. could have been double cos the cops said my rear lights were also obscured but he let me go on that. I bought a trailer board fitted with lights, plugs etc at Suburban Spares for R150. I attach it to the last bike and Bob's your uncle. bought it 3 years ago as a short term solution until I can afford the integrated lights thule rack, never got around to it cos it works perfectly. Cheaper than the thule light rack and cheaper than a fine
  23. i'm sure drafting a truck at speed must be fun, ive never done it, not planning to either. if you wish to call upon grim reaper, do it without putting others at risk. if the oke had to get it wrong others were put at risk, and would not like to be in a car that rides over a cyclist, one has to live with that forever.
  24. Agree, but chances are if that trucks brakes and he crashes into it, then we could knock him as well or we could end up taking out other cars and ourselves. So it endangers everyone. At one time the speedometer on the car was 64km/h
