On behalf of the members of East Coast Cycling Club, I would like to lodge a formal complaint with the Mayor’s office regarding the disgusting mess being left along the Durban beachfront, particularly in the Bike and Bean area and along to the Laguna Beach Pools. We are witness nearly every weekend to drunken revelry, litter, urinating, broken glass and public drinking. To make matters worse, these drunk individuals then get into their cars and taxis and drive off, endangering lives. This happens nearly every weekend and is worse when there is a big soccer match or concert at Moses Mabhida Stadium or People’s Park. Why is there no effective policing? Is it going to take a death to put a stop to this? Because if that is what it takes, it will be tantamount to MURDER. Knowing that it is going to happen will almost make it premeditated! The Mayor wants to market the city as a sun and sports destination and yet our Promenade, one of Durban’s biggest assets is left a disgrace. In fact I was at a function on Saturday night where she told the guests at the 21st Anniversary Dinner at the Durban ICC how much was being done to attract tourists to Durban. Well if she could have seen the mess, she would have been embarrassed! It’s time for the City and the Metro Police to do something once and for all to put a stop to this lawlessness. Interesting. While I did not ride the 947 last year, so can't speak for that, when I apply the 1.10 BETA to my time, I come in at 2h57 which is bang on what I had originally hoped for.

Questions. I see that just 34 people entered/finished the 160km! They had hoped for 250 entries. Do you think: 1. The sub-3/seeding index of <1 excluded too many people? 2. The cost was too high? 3. The pros/teams stuck to the 106 for the win? 4. We just don't have enough people keen/able to do 100milers? 5. Any other thoughts?

For anyone wanting to do the annual spin out to Breakers in Umhlanga (±35kms) on Saturday, East Coast Cycling will be leaving Suncoast Casino at 6:00am. Go and see Dr. Ian Stead in Durban. Regarded as one of the best knee guys in town. He and his partner did both my mom's knees at the same time and she was up and walking in days and 3 years late no problems at all. Just seen ECCC Whippet has also recommended Dr Stead!

My 2 cents worth. Set some achievable goals for the year to keep you motivated. Mine was to hit 10 000kms for the year. The closer I get the more I'm loving my riding Join a club, one that has a social batch and a racing batch to get the enthusiasm back. Coffee and chit-chat work wonders! Ditch the in-door trainer. Easier for us in Durban, but it's too easy not to get out and ride and then to rather just stay on bed. When you buddies put pressure on you to ride, don't palm them off. They are trying to help you get the mojo back! Mix it up. Not every ride has to be a suffer-fest. Sometimes a 20km coffee rode does wonders for the soul.

You can go to any signage company and ask for off-cuts of heavy duty clear Self Adhesive Vinyl. Apply it using a spray bottle with soapy water to avoid bubbles. If you have R700 to spare, contact VPS - just google it. They use that anti-scratch film they put on cars. Excellent product and will look the bees knees!

Heads-up peeps. These swines who are determined to steal our bikes have come up with a new trick in Dirtbin. They have taken to strininging a wire acrodd the road and pulling it up just as you ride over it. They got 1 of our club members and his buddy on Tuesday morning (in daylight) and he ended up in ICU with a smashed collar bone, broken ribs and a punctured lung. Fortunately cars stopped almost immediately and they did not get to steal the bikes or mug them, but they ran away with the wire, so they will be back! What next!!!
