  1. Yep, I was a victim too! Must have picked it up somewhere between Something Country and Avianto. Just heard fssss every time my wheel went around - luckily it was slow enough that I managed to get to the garage just after you cross the Crocodile river and head up that beast of a hill towards Carnivores.
  2. Yes, it is interesting that several replies here could be classed as "defensive". Asking if the OP spoke to them at the time and not accepting that this is not how cyclists should behave. In my opinion, what these guys is doing is indefensible - period. It is plain wrong not to mention stupid. And If I was driving and had to negotiate my way around this bunch I would have been annoyed no doubt about it. Would I have said anything? Not too sure but as several others have pointed out, the kind of mentality that thinks it's cool or "mean" to act like an a&^hole on your bike (or car) is the kind of mentality that will probably get aggressive when you point out to them how dumb they are being. So you can be relatively sure that when you point out to them (and I don't think it matters HOW you tell this to them), you will cop flak. Is it worth it? It will spoil your morning if you end up having a verbal spat (or even worse) with these guys. If I was a driver and came around the corner to encounter this, I would probably hoot and drive on.
  3. Tankman, where was this shot? Looks like the KZN Midlands...?
  4. Here is a print screen from this morning's run: http://img828.imageshack.us/img828/5095/sportstracker.jpg
  5. If you have a smart phone (iPhone, Android, Blackberry), you could consider using one of several apps that do a lot of this stuff. I personally have tried Adidas micoach, Endomondo and Sportstracker. All work well and have their pro's and cons. I have ended up using the sportstracker because I bought their HRM belt (paid around R500) which they have locked to their service (dodgy in my opinion to do this and only discovered after the purchase so will live with it). But I find this service really great. It tells you: SpeedAverage speedSplit timesAltitudeMap of your run/ride/routeHRM which you can see for the course or by how much time you spent in the various zonesYou can upload this all to the internet to give you training diary - very nifty. You can compare previous routes to see how your speed etc is improving and so on. Just be aware of these negatives: Phones are not really built to be bashed around that much so I tend to put mine in my camelpack where I cannot easily get to it. Therefore it is not easy to determine your ride stats (though it does verbally give you stats every 1km)Phones not waterproof - problem if it rains or is very muddy.Battery life CAN be an issue on LONG rides - it should last about 4 to 8 hours but if you are doing a 6 hour ride, this could be a problem. Good luck...
  6. Looks like something you would find in a nappy!
  7. Don't agree - Naartjie/orange peels tend to dry out and lie there for several weeks/months before finally decomposing. The oils in the skin make them unpalatable to most goggos.
  8. I find the same thing - hitting 80% of max on an indoor trainer feels tough but I seem to be able to cycle at a higher intensity for longer when in a race without feeling it as much. But as another post from today to my brother's HRM chart (who hammers it even harder than I do) said, don't worry about your heart - it will tell you when you are pushing too hard. Your HRM just tells you what is going on but your body will protect itself.
  9. Plain insane! I am very impressed you finished on that micro bike! Wow! Decent time too considering! Your ass must have looked like a piece of steak!
  10. Yes yes yes! So glad I am not the only one that gets totally the m*^r in when people chuck their crap onto the road. Usually when you take them to task they come up with some BRILLIANT comment like "That's why I pay an entry fee." Geez guy, you think your R280 covers the cost of a team of people driving a 100km route looking over the road and in the bushes on the side for all the crap that d&*^ses like you leave lying around?!! Even if that were true, why not throw the stuff away properly and save them the effort. On a side bar, yesterday I was riding next to some ballie who proceeded to spit basically all over me as we turned down Homestead drive. Some people are just such idiots!

  13. The theatre is at 286 Fox Street in JHB Centre but I think I will brave the city for this! Who wants to go?!!
  14. Guys, I got the Sports Tracker BT HRM belt. Works well and I enjoy it. But PLEASE be aware that this belt is designed to ONLY work with their software. If you want to use it with eg Endomondo, rather get the Zephyr option. A bit annoying to only discover this after buying the Sports Tracker unit. However, I must say the Sports Tracker software is cool - I might use it anyway even if I had a choice to use others. I use a Samsung Galaxy i9000s by the way.

  17. Anyone know details of this case? Seems ridiculous to me! If he did indeed INTENTIONALLY swerve into the cyclists, then I cannot understand how he got away with this. However, I suspect it was considered culpable homocide because he was drunk, not because he intentionally swerved into them. (Not that this excuses what he did in any way!) I do hope that a guy like this idiot has this on his conscience for the rest of his life because I know a widow of a cyclist killed whilst training for the argus and it has been 10 years - she is not over it and I don't think she will ever be over it. Hasn't remarried and there are pictures of her dead husband on every wall. Very sad but just shows how far the damage from these kinds of things goes - the driver that killed her husband effectively took most of her life as well.

  19. Chubba, I would say you are too old for one I am afraid!
  20. Ok - I won't quote that picture for fear of breaking the web with too much of image. That was a BEEG PEEKCHA
  21. Hmmm - tried that but had the heater set high and it obviously pulled too much juice for the timer plug to handle and it melted!

  24. Following on from some of the posts around religious belief... It is well to know something of the manners of various peoples, in order more sanely to judge our own, and that we do not think that everything against our modes is ridiculous, and against reason, as those who have seen nothing are accustomed to think. -Rene Descartes, philosopher and mathematician (1596-1650)

I have a pair of sidi dominators and had them for about 5 years now. Very happy with them but...I also have the olympics for road riding. To be honest, I would buy the olympics every time - just as comfy (if not more so) and a lot cheaper. Might be a few more grams and not have the same cred but really, for R1400 I can live with that.
