  1. couldn't agree more with the comments above - its risky buying shoes online without trying them on first. I personally made this mistake. If you have even a slightly broad foot, you may run into issues with SIDI as they are a pretty narrow shoe.

Best is to go and try them on before purchasing.

    +1 on the Spez shoes.

  2. Most bike shops do some sort of bike fit, and this may be good enough for the vast majority ....

The fun starts when you have some sort of medical issue.  People such as Irma are biokeneticists (SP?), and do a proper evaluation of "the individual", then set up the bike to that persons requirements.

I would rather contact IRMA and set up a date and time works for you, and get the best possible value for money - especially if you have "twitch of sorts" ....

Her location is also pretty cool, I drove through from Hermanus with the family and while i was being fitted they had a nice lunch and the kids had a jol at the play area.

  3. I missed that part... There is R600 minimum right there

  4. I haven't heard of this, but I don't get around to cycle around Paul Cluver trails often enough to make the annual permit worth it for me.

Houw Hoek tour is probably one of the most bang for your buck events imo in the WC - basically day 2 & 3 of Wines to Whales for under R1000.

Water points stacked to the brim with Droeëwors and other fun stuff.

Then the Eselfontein 3-day race I am doing this year for the first time, also looks to be great value for money.

awesome, noted and on the list of 2020

  5. Oh yes, i do remember there was a cut off to the cycling jersey.

But still at R1600 you could get a shirt, loads of food and the prize giving was pretty mouth watering to hang around for.

I compare this with the Simonsberg Contour that i have also done and for roughly R1400(?) you don't get much more than a buff and a few Boss ice teas...

This price seems to be par for the course in terms of stage races in the Western Cape.

But I don't want to derail this thread into a discussion of which races are better value for money.

    Or do I

It is Friday afterall  so why not....

I must be honest, it's really not that bad an entrance fee when one factors in all that is included. Take Karoo2Coast as an example, factor in a cycling top and the dinner and breakfast and it is more than half of what OOT costs. Don't get me wrong, the cash we have to part for most 2 day or single day events is a fair bit - but apart from the "items included" in the entry fee, it's about the experience of the event (which shouldn't be a license to charge exorbitant entry fees).

I saw that there is an event at Paul Cluver this weekend, it's not a timed "race", but a come and experience the trails type of deal. Think entry is R865.00 (somewhere around this mark), and it included a case of Paul Cluver wine, the remainder of 2019 and the whole of 2020 permit fees, and a burger & beer at the end. IMHO, that's good value?

  6. My gillet blew out on that long downhill, guy came past at the bottom and said he saw it at the fall out near the top, i could not see myself going back up to get it, hopefully someone picked it up, it was a nice one and still dry

If he saw it blow out - surely it would not have made that much of a diffs to his time if he stopped, picked it up, and pass it back to you when he caught up. Some folks.....

  7. I started this years event from G batch with a mate who was doing it for the first time. Unfortunately my body just couldn't do it anymore, and so at the bottom of Prince Alfreds pass, I called it a day. At the top of Prince Alfred there was a number of cyclists bailing and three or four trucks were loaded to the hilt with people and bikes.

At the bottom where I called it a day, another two trucks came past and were full, there was even a truck which had the back covered in a canvas (reminded me of a buffel from the mag days) and there were people jammed in there like crazy. The truck my bike was on (i was lucky, no damage to report) had around 10 bikes on it and there was space for three riders. Two of the bikes on our truck were there cause their pilots were in an ambulance en-route to hospital, broken clavicle and a smashed elbow.

The back of the field was crazy, and i reckon that there were way more than 300pax that bailed. At one point, almost every vehicle we saw had people wrapped in space blankets, was carnage.

P.S. profile pic is from 2018

  8. Guess this is nitpicking but BUCO not a headline sponsor anymore, which is important because it means currently the event needs as much as possible support from local riders if it is going to survive

Eish I did not know - fixed. I see they also are no longer title sponsor for the K2C? Wonder if it is due to the current economic environment or if they are at the end of their sponsor term and simply not renewing?

Either way, fully agree, this is where we as riders need to rally together and support them even more.

  9. In terms of the types of trails, there's nothing really to be worried about from memory...

Apart from one or three tight + rocky switchbacks, the trails cater for a very wide field of riders which isn't overly technical, but has a lot of singletrack on offer.

I would say that if you are comfortable on the Hemel and Aarde trails, then you shouldn't be caught off guard with anything that's on offer.

Thanks Chingy182 - I am stoked as to what lies ahead in terms of the trails and the technical aspect. I definitely could ride the Hemel en Aarde Valley better - but ja its my back garden so no excuses

  10. Did this race in 2018 and it was serious fun.

Stellies I always find very deceptive and you really work hard for every bit of elevation gained.

You ride Jonkershoek and Coetzenburg area on day 1 and then Banhoek and Botmanskop on day 2.

The trails and route is amazing, but those valleys raak lekker warm in November!!

Fantastic - thanks for this. Ja I guess come late November it will be pretty warm - but after the recent K2C experience - I welcome a bit of heat :whistling:

  11. First off - hoping i have posted this topic within the correct forum, if not please advise and I will edit accordingly.

I have entered for this event as it has been one on the "must do events list" for a while. I would like to know a bit more of the type of trails, elevation, and so forth - but for the love of me I cant seem to find route profiles anywhere?

    Anyone able to help out?

It will also be my first 2 day event, excited AF but also pretty nervous. Do's and Dont's are most welcome.

    TIA

  12. Yip with the Hoedspruit bunch. Had a few mattes that did it the past weekend. Alot of the riding in Blue Canyon Conservancy. Another 2 friends of mine did an fun tour inside of Klaserie. They loved it.

I actually went onto Strava after the post and saw that a few guys are regularly riding on the gravel road as you enter the Tau Gate and when you get to De Wagedrift gravel road. The went down the road for about 10km and turned back to head back to the starting point. I'm waiting for Dinokeng reserve to get back to me also else I will phone tomorrow to find out.

All the best with your tours. Alot of work will need to go into it to make it work.

Lets hope that nobody gets hurt during their rogue riding.

In terms of the tours, ja it is a lot of work indeed, but thankfully my issue, until now, was to find a reliable person to run with the business - but thats all sorted so we are good to go

  13. This past weekend I took part in the Kruger to Canyon Tour, a 95km cycle tour starting at Orpen Gate in Kruger. We cycled through parts of Kruger, Timbavati, Thornybush, Kapama and Moditlo, en route to the finish at Swadini. Amazing experience, saw plenty game and an Ellie from a distance. Entries limited to 100, split into groups of 20 riders per group. Each group had an armed guide and two backup guides. Highly recommend. All proceeds go towards anti-poaching.

Then coming back to an earlier post of mine, have nearly wrapped up the mtb tour on a private concession near Phalaborwa, but working on a few others, like a 3-4 day tour in the Western Cape. Have been battling with finding the right person to run with these tours, but thats all sorted so we are full steam ahead. If anyone is interested in the tours that will be on offer towards the end of this year, drop me an email with your contact info and I will get some info to you. sales@wildhospitality.com

  14. Im looking to go to Dinokeng soon and want to actually take my mtb with. What is the current rules, I can't find it anywhere? I have to stay within the rules I know even that i'm an ex field guide with FGASA 3

Hope that you have your Phalaborwa trails up an running. I heard that Masketi or something like that called does not do any mtb trails anymore in the area.

No chance riding in the Dinokeng Reserve with free roaming Big 5. Very strict with what guides do walks for guests in the reserve - so unfortunately cycling isnt an option.
